Turnout is one of the foundational elements of ballet technique. Although it may seem strange, rotating the legs from the hips and turning out the feet correctly increases balance, stability, agility, and range of motion--which is why we do it in ballet!
The turnout exercise in this video is short but very powerful. It's a perfect way to begin any ballet barre and can also be done on its own. Just be sure to follow the training instructions.
