I think thats an excellent tool, reasonably simple, but totally fit for purpose. I could do with one of a similar size, so have been looking at a few different designs, and yours looks like one I'd like to have a go at making. Good video, thanks for making it available.

I'd always wondered what to do if the plate has lost the position of the original pivot hole. Thanks for the nice video showing how to restore it!

The other option would be to have left and right hand threads on the nuts so as you tightened the knob both sides would be drawn in and pushed apart when unscrewed. Which would mean youd have to have right and left hand threads on either end of the screw also.

You might not think its worth a prize but I would be very proud to have made this :) Nothing like an old coot who knows what they are doing :)

I'd give it a prize! Nice job Colin, would probably benefit from a spring for a bit of tension, but it does the job and that's the whole point, 10/10 from me, All the best, Cliff

You’re quite right. I fitted an ordinary spring between the two plates round the the adjuster. Actually, very necessary to avoid accidentally letting it slip.

You could just put a stiff spring between the two halves. They would still move, but wouldn't move as easily.

Function over form every time. Just wondering if an elastic band running from one of your lock screws, around the outside to the opposite lock screw would provide enough tension to keep the plates apart?

It wasn’t long before I fitted a coiled spring between. I’m amazed at how many hits this site has.

I would really like to see more of that castle clock. Is it John Wildings design?

Yes it is. I made this 30 years ago and it went well for 27 of them. However, it’s now proving to be a problem to get it working.

I would really like to see a video about your Castle Clock. I have stalled on a similar clock I started to build some years ago.@@colinmaceke7474

It seems to be a problem clock. I have met others who have been unable to get theirs running reliably. The depthing of the main wheel is critical. My present problem is that it runs perfectly for one sometimes exactly two hours; and no, it’s not a problem with the hour wheel. I have made his skeleton clock which has been working for over 30 years but it has one problem too. It’s supposed to be an 8 day movement but the best it does is just a few hours short of 7 when it runs out of cable at the end of the fusee. I spent a few years repairing clocks for a local antique shop but this castle clock is bewildering. Sorry I’m have no video of it. Good luck with yours. I trust you’ve watched “clickspring”, building his. If only I could be that good!

Very nice work. The filler rod that was used on the runner brass was what we call brazing rod in the U.S. Typically, it is hard to clean up the flux from it, but you did a nice job of removing it. Thanks for sharing!
