How to make a Clockmakers Gear Depthing Tool - Simple Design

Ойын-сауық

The difficulty with any clock makers depthing tool is the critical parallelism of the runners. What I do not explain clear enough in this video, that provided the holes for the runner bearings and hinges are drilled in one sitting, each row of holes at a time in the milling machine, parallelism is guaranteed regardless of how square the frames are!
I hope you enjoy the video. Like and Subscribe and check my other videos out for more building and making!

    Good functional work. Suitable for much of the common repairs and especially good for train layout in the beginning. The locating pins should be a very slow taper if indeed tapered at all. Best is truly cylindrical brass rod, with smooth domed ends ...but of course the close fit will make separating the plates a little tricky until separated and united a few times. Hope many will give this a go to your pattern and instruction. Not a tool needed daily, but the only one that will make the grade when the time comes.

    A nice project video. It showed the whole process in a easy to understand way that inspires without intimidating. At a few points I wasn't sure if you were going to start describing the build in time to the beat... lol.

    I really liked the simplicity of the concept to keep the arbor supports parallel, overall an excellent project well executed. Do you have rough plans/ dimensions and where did you source the spring you used to hinge the tool. I intend to make a depthing tool and I really like your design. Thank you for sharing on you tube.

    Hugh Gaynor hi, thanks for the comments, I’ll get some dimensions in the next few days. I based it on a commercial depthing tool. The spring is from a large “bulldog clip”. I’m not sure if bulldog clip is a uk term but if you search google I’m sure you’ll find them. It is what you would use to clip together a large pile of papers to hold them together.

    craynerd In Australia we also call them bull dog clips. Thank you I look forward to the information and appreciate your willingness to share. PS I have subscribed to your channel.

    Jim Arnott they are called taper pins and if you do a search with the word clock you'll find lots of them. They are on eBay, Meadow and Passmore, HSWalsh ... They do both steel and brass. I've never used steel but can guarantee that with brass you can file and sand the back thick end down and it becomes invisible with the surface. All the best

    How do you make sure the 4 bars are parallel? You put a couple of ball bearings at each tightening screw?

  • @craynerd

    @craynerd

    6 жыл бұрын

    dreamlessfull the whole machining order and design ensures the bars have to be parallel! I don’t understand the rest of your message. Yes, the ball bearing, as always, are precision made, fit in the holes and ensure the bars are square to each other and parallel.

    Well second hand ones demand a reasonable price on eBay depending on the type. For something fairly basic I would think appropriately £120- £150

    Nice design. I plan to make mine with wood. Two pieces of wood about same as your brass with hinges. The trick will be the guides for the runners. I think I can make them frictional tight and use drill press, just enough not to slide. I'll use rubber bands to maintain closing pressure and typical screw. I would like to put the screw further away from the hinge so that adjustment would be more gradual.

    Matthew Condon Hi Matthew, no I haven’t got that book. You can make whatever you like I suppose out of the front image as it is such a simple sketch, however the thicker section of the frame near the runners suggest you’ll need to bore a hole in the frames. I wanted to keep away from this as I was sure I wouldn’t get all 4 holes parallel. To be fair, I’m not sure I’d be able to get two holes on the same side parallel and inline without cutting in one sitting, which is a long hole! That’s why I went with this design. You are guaranteed parallel runners if you drill in the correct order!
