Total amateur here that messed with a few cuckoos, ( heard yours at 6:44 ) just met a neighbor clock guy that told me about drilling the pivot. I had no idea you could even do this. Amazing that you freehanded it like that with such little bit of meat on each side. Nice tutorial

There is a couple of ways to pivot a gear but I like drilling and resetting a new pivot. My old jeweler's lathe which came from my dad when I went to jewelers school didn't have the tailstock so I made a self-centering tool that works quite well. The Bench Jeweler Mike E.

I have had some different comments on how to drill and re-pivot a gear and there are better ways to do it if you have the equipment this is true. However, if you have perhaps a 100 year old lathe and no tail stock for it this method works pretty well.

I broke one, trying to straighten it. £30.00 to have it done. I will have to get a small lathe. Good video.

Well, I'm from the central part of the USA. Born and raised in Nebraska. Attended Watchmaking and Jewelry at Gem City College in Quincy Ill. My father was a machinist for Hornaday Bullet MFG and worked part-time for a jewelry story repairing their clocks. I picked up a lot of extras through the years from the knowledge of my father. Thanks for the kind compliment. The Bench Jeweler

Great video. Wouldn’t recommend hammering that pivot in the headstock. Not good for the bearings

Yes, you're not the first one that said that. Remember it's held in by a collet and against the headstock, not the bearings. Looked like I was really hitting it hard but it was just a tapping. The lathe in question is one of 4 lathes that I own the lathe has no tailstock and I'm guessing over a hundred years old. It Might have been better if I had pulled the gear shaft and used a jeweler block If I ever redo the video I will do just that. Thanks for watching Mike E The Bench Jeweler.

In the case of a leaf pinion that's close to the end of the arbor shaft, this method won't work. I have three other lathes that will work but once again if you don't have great equipment and an old jewelers lathe that has no tail stock it still can be done. Using a very sharp graver you can cut a true center at the end of the shaft and then drill it out. In fact in watchmaking school that was one of the requirements to pass the watchmaker course.... .But if your just starting out no schooling and don't want to spend 1200 hours of lathe practices there are some tricks.

What if the leaf pinion is very near the end of the arbor

Then you will have to do one of two things, if you have a lathe with tail stock you can use a centering bit to find and drill the center of the shaft. If not you will need a lathe and you will have to use a graver to cut the a v into the shaft and find the center then you can drill it with a pin vice and drill bit.

I think you have replied to this before Derek but when you don't have a tail stock as I don't and use my jewelers lathe so little I'm not going out and hunt for and buy a tail stock after 40 years. The method I showed works very well on most gears should you need to pivot them.
