In the heart of San Francisco, a man was caught trying to break into his own jewelry store at night. During questioning by the FBI, it's revealed that the man's wife is being held hostage at their home by a ruthless extortionist who demands the store's diamonds for her life. In a standoff at the jeweler's home, the extortionist shoots the family's maid and demands to take the jeweler's wife to the docks. FBI agent Warren Stantin tails them, but his attempt to apprehend the extortionist leads to the jeweler's wife being shot in the left eye and killed, while the extortionist has rigged a boat as a decoy and manages to escape.

Sidney Poitier is an excellent actor. Excellent movie.
Fantastic movie with my all time favourite Sidney Poitier (next to Yul Brynner) of course. Really no end of nail biting excitement.

Movie Mistake: At 59:46 Look all the way down the river at the hill with grass and rocks scattered, there's 3 pine trees on the left and a car drives by. It's hard to see at first, but at about 3/4 of the way up the tree you can see the car (white). Still a great movie.
During the filming of In The Heat of the night the script read Sydney would be slapped by a white man and he was to do nothing. Sydney said BS the rest is history FACT!! Sydney Poitier is in the top ten actors of all time…..
