Sick Riffs #88: Cody Quistad teaches you Wage War's Who I Am

Ойын-сауық

Florida's Wage War deserve a spot on any metalhead's playlist, and should be firmly on the radar of any heavy-inclined aspiring six-stringer. The group's 2019 album, Pressure, sees the five-piece double-down on their already-established brand of metalcore - which is often tastefully infused with electronica and tech-death influences.
The record emerges strong from the get-go with Who I Am, a ferocious rager with all the hallmarks of solid contemporary metalcore: drop-tuned, technically impressive guitar lines, ground-shaking drum work and an instantly catchy chorus section. Guitarist Cody Quistad joins Guitar World today from his house in Nashville, Tennessee to take you through the track's show stopping main riff.

Sick Riffs is a Guitar World video series designed to help guitarists affected by the coronavirus. Self-isolating players around the world have each filmed a lesson where they teach you one of their own guitar riffs, up close and personal. If you dig the lesson, we encourage you to buy music and merch from the artist or stream their music.

Tasty riff! Got that modern groove metal open string stuff going with that eastern feel. Loving the sound of the Fishmans in that Tele btw BUT there are tons of chord voicings in drop tho not just “a couple” including stuff that isn’t possible in standard.

@@smokehill7912 actually to be fair, i have a SQUIRE bullet telecaster that has some serious tone for modern metal, and its got singles. obviously, it is not the best, tho I would never claim to say so. however it is an amazing option for $200 bucks, sounds better than half of the budget guitars in that range that are specifically designed for metal. it doesn't really compare to that of a mid-high end guitar with actives (or even passives) but honestly, i could write a record with it and it would kick ass. cleans are crazy nice on the neck pickup too.

rebeltug i love metal on single coils. they cut thru the mix really well and give the tone a very mid focused sound. especially the telecaster pickups. i agree 100%

Smokehill i’ve been using it for standard-Drop A# (with different string gauges of course) and it’s been a serious kick ass guitar. I never knew how much i liked them, but with ToneForge it sounds SO sick.

@@rebeltug I've also found that dry toned guitars with single coils do indeed work really well with most digital amp setups, Its just a nice neutral base to let the plugins work with. I find my schecter can sound pretty strained in a lot of the more obscure plugins and less clear in some others.

On a standard scale guitar, just use an 8 string set with a .74 or heavier low string, toss the 7th and 1st strings in the set and ur good to go. You may have to do a small setup adjustment to accommodate the heavier strings as well as filing the nut so that heavy of a string sits right in the nut
