My first song (not riff) played in drop D tuning: Run Like Hell - Pink Floyd (The Wall - 1979). I learned this in the summer of 1980. I was 17 at the time and loved Pink Floyd, but this album just blew me away! Keeping that drop D going was....challenging to say the least considering my gear: '74 Strat (sunburst, of course) a chorus, distortion, and wah pedal, played through a massive 40 watt Fender Vibrolux Reverb. I still have all this stuff and it all still works! A LOT of yards were mowed, leaves raked, and groceries bagged to buy this stuff, lol!

Hey same! I started playing guitar because I wanted to play Linkin Park songs, so I never tried standard tuning until I'd been playing for half a year. First song I ever learned in standard was Enter Sandman. And yeah if your whole understanding of the instrument is framed around modern rock/metal and single finger bar chords, playing in standard seems way more difficult. 15 year old me wondering why the f the Master of Puppets riff is played in standard lol

My first drop D song was The thing that should not be. Only to find out years later that the official book was wrong and it wasn't drop D at all, It was really standard D.

Killing in the Name of is the first song I think of when I think of Drop D. Easily their most iconic song of theirs, and it's so fun to play if you're learning to get into different tunings!

My cousin had this bar on the border of Cali and AZ out pretty much in the middle of nowhere off of this river...it was kind of close to Palm Springs...anyway, my two musician siblings, and my niece who could sing and could pull off Bulls On Parade lyrics (my oldest brother didn't have time to learn it on bass, so he sat out, and a friend of ours that also came to that debauchery knew Bulls on bass, so he played on that one) ...we threw together a bunch of songs, showed up with a bunch of gear, and did this thrown together show there, and I guess my second cousin put the word out, and that place was packed...it was a crazy night...we did so many different rock musical styles and songs that night...kicked it off with Sgt Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band/ With A Little Help From My Friends...did stuff all the way from Jimmy Buffet to Rage...when we did that Rage song, my brother Mike (sadly passed away now...miss him greatly every day) often said he never struggled playing Rage stuff, because it just came natural to him...he'd say the what Rage's drummer did, his approach, was very much like how he just naturally approached playing...so a big portion of the crowd was a younger crowd, and there was a band from Cali that opened the night that was really good...anyway, we played all these old school songs, so when we got to doing Bulls On Parade, we caught the place way off guard, hahaha! We really worked on that song, too, so that it had that energy...started that song off with just comping on a string patch prelude on the keyboard I had while wearing my guitar, then when I got to the last chord of playing this minor key improvise on keyboard strings, I held the last chord with the sustain pedal so I could be ready to "Pada, bump, PaDa, bump Pada!"...when we hit that hard, that place went nuts...just a bouncing in unison crowd...even though not a drop D song, still one of my favorite experiences ever playing music with family and friends, hahaha!
