I believe some of Sibelius's loveliest themes are here. He probably needed little inspiration in 1904 for the the heart-rending 'Death of Mélisande' scene at 20:42 cleverly contrasted with the energy at 17:42 of the 'Entr'acte'. Four years earlier, the composer's daughter Kirsti had perished soon after birth, a bitter blow that literally drove him to drink, and his empathy for the dying Mélisande is tangible. Maeterlinck's symbolist play, being episodic, never reveals what the heroine is dying of... a broken heart at her lover's murder, or postpartum bleeding, or something altogether more impalpable? We do know she is a lost soul in an alien land who, falling for Pelléas at first sight, felt compelled to follow her heart. (Sibelius had experienced a similar _coup de foudre_ on meeting his wife-to-be, Aino). Mélisande defied her marriage vows and a 'symbolic' sacrifice must be paid. Though she departs, her tiny daughter will in some way take her place.

Lovely music but I cannot understand how the musicians can follow this conductor: his motions are not usual for a conductor and are rather jerky. Nevertheless, the musicians are looking at him so there must be some sort of communication (perhaps more visual?).

He gets an A for humor though when at the end of a movement he stops the orchestra so the audience can cough and applaud!
