What a beautiful performance.

This symphonic poem was the first work of Sibelius that caught my ears decades ago and since then i never had enough of its magic. I really love the tempo of this performance of En Saga for it evokes the coldness, haunting and mysteries of the untamed northern Finnish dark forest. The communication between the charming conductor and the fine orchestra is mesmerizing.

This, Kullervo and Tapiola.

This piece of music MAY BE the “crowning glory” of all of Sibelius’s works!!! Absolutely “fantastic”, “gorgeous”, “amazing”!!!!! It’s a “LIVING THRIVING” organism, a living thing all its own! Once it’s in your blood, you’re “HOOKED” forever! The musicians must be overwhelmed by what they’ve collectively played! WOW!!!

I've rarely seen such a communication and a attention between the conductor and the musicians. I love how fiercely and wholeheartedly he pointed at the first violist before leaving.

Excellent rendering of this Sibelius classic . The orchestra and conductor are not well represented on You Tube --- hopefully this will change .

I certainly hope so. I've a certain affection for French orchestras, not sure why but maybe it's because I consider Hector Berlioz as possibly the greatest musical genius of all time - (along with Sibelius of course - lol)

@@paullewis2413 -- Hector was a genius iconoclast, a world unto himself (nevermind an island!). Sibelius is no less, one of the greatest composers; his sincerity and nobleness are evidenced by the extended silence that marked his later years: he had done all and could go no further. I am everlastingly-renewed by his radiant music (as much as by Bruckner's).

“Ach du Lieber, mein schatz”!!! “HEI”! “Mita Kuuluu”? Sibelius AT HIS VERY VERY FINEST!!! This fabulous music, like ALL his music, is a “living breathing ORGANISM”!!!!! It “THROBS”! His country Finland must have “infectuated him” beyond belief! His Violin Concerto itself stands with the VERY MOST WONDERFUL of all the violin concertos - “TUMULTUOUS”!!! Hard to listen to if you have a “difibrulator/pacemaker” like ol’ Mr. Thickey (81) - “Blows the circuits” right out of its box!! Mr. Mikko Frank sort of looks a little like the old time American actor “Peter Lorre”, whom most of you out there in TV land never heard of! You could call Mikko “blinkie” too, with all due respect. I especially loved those “dual violinists”, the Violist, & that tremendous Clarinet passage!! His gorgeous “haunting timbre” was a “high spot” for for me! Thank you LORD JESUS for “inventing” this thing called “MUSIC”!!! “Gesundheit” und pass da “LUTEFISK” poleaze! “Kiito”!

Quelle magnifique version ! Emprunte de noblesse et de sensibilité, la connivence entre un orchestre magnifique et son chef, charismatique et sympathique, n'y est pas pour rien.

It's sad that you don't see many American orchestras performing Sibelius' many greater tone poems. Everyone is stuck on Finlandia. En Saga, The Oceanides, Tapiola, Kulervo, Lemminkäinen, Scenes Historiques.... so many great works.

The Utah Symphony has just performed it! It was very beautiful!

Sibelius' tone poems transport me into a state of wonderment. The work of a true poet by a masterful composer.

This great piece never ceases to amaze; this conductor and orchestra are world class. A marvelous interpretation! This video is an absolute gem! Bravo to all!

Wunderschöne und kultivierte Beschreibung der Aufführung. "Bewundernswert" ist eine viel zu schwache Beschreibung, aber ein besseres Wort fällt mir auch nicht ein. Vielleicht etwas wie "packend", "inbrünstig" oder "ergreifend".

Another victory for the Nordic Sound! From Grieg, Stenhammar, Berwald, to the greatest: Sibelius. "En saga", a tale, is almost as good as Tapiola, the one we are all waiting for. Another I am waiting for is "The Bard", a mysterious thing. But this uptaking I like very much!

I'm always on the fence about how I feel about "The Bard". In comparison to the rest of his music, it feels disconnected from his compositional journey.

R.I.P. Louie Anderson.... Truly a great music enthusiast at heart. I was so sad to hear him pass away this year and I hope his musical career which started with the tuba has satisfied him to the end. Good night sweet prince.

I'm surprised people consider Sibelius music to be "cold". I'd rather say its glowing of emotional intensity. His orchestration may be on the darker side, but nuanced, colorful and expressionate all the same. This performance of En Saga is one of the best I've ever heard (and I heard a few). The tempi are perfect, it keeps moving all the time but not dragging or rushing in any way (an exception perhaps being the tenuto at 11:40, which might be a little exaggerated). The orchestral balance is exquisite and the recording brilliant, bringing forth all fascinating details. And as for the music - well, it speaks for itself :-) Drama on the highest of levels. En sann saga - a true fairy tale.

The ‘coldest’ Sibelius is thought to be the 4th symphony

@@julianholman7379 Yes, indeed, I can imagine this symphony is considered to be very cold. The slow (third) movement especially is like a painting of a moon-lit Koli mountain, from where you can see far away over the lakes and endless forests in the gloomy light (the symphony is as a matter of fact sometimes referred to as "Koli symphony"). This might be on a cold winter night. But still I personally sense it more desolate than cold, and think this like the whole symphony is rather a tonal painting of inner landscapes of the mind, only "cold" in a psychological sense.

From around 10:37, the music is reflected in the soundtrack for The Towering Inferno (written by John Williams?), at the countdown to the explosion that saves the day! Same key, even. :) And the conductor reminds me of Aled Jones, the singer.

Very nice! ... and another worthy rival to older interpretations, by Toscanini, Szell, Furtwangler (2! of them), Dorati, et. al. I only wish the interpretation had TAKEN-OFF more, at the 3+ minute mark, but it's a minor cavil. The orchestral playing is very fine, and this one of the best, no doubt, of recent interpretations ... of THE, great tone poem/short piece of ALL, in the standard repertoire, although I'm sure that it's not played, very much, in present days.

Too civilized. This performance makes me appreciate all the more the brutal pacing and outbursts of Eugene Ormandy and the Philadelphia musicians.

IMO Ormandy is among the best interpreters of Sibelius. However I did enjoy this performance though it does lack the necessary impact at times.

Too slow for me. I prefer Vänska, but still it's beautiful.
