Sibelius : En Saga - Ashkenazy*

Ashkenazy's slower and very atmospheric reading of En Saga beats every performance of it.......

At the moment I can only listen to Sibelius. I have a good stereo system on my sailing boat and his music fits magically when sailing.

I came here to hear what Sinitic peoples (like Finns, Chinese and Cantonese) have as their equivalent of pop music. And I realized they have much better taste in music than Italians or other western Europeans. If Sibelius is the undisputed Shifu of HK-pop, then I am officially proud to be a HK-pop fan.

How can one man bring such beauty into the world? This wonderful work played superbly is just one of so many examples. My number one composer.

It's impossible for me to name a No.1 composer but Sibelius is a contender and ranks in my top 2 or 3

@@harriohman1664 Yeah, Sibelius is a Shifu of music!
16:15 this passage is so breathtaking. That crescendo "sweep" in the ppp strings and just repeating the dominant and tonica.
Absolutely fantastic music, never get tied of listening to that mysterious work!
Forever!! Life!!! Sibelius!!! 👍😁❗❤👍❗❗❗
Beautifully conceived and performed, wonderful phrasing and sound, one of the very best performances I have ever heard, Bravo to all!
Beautiful rendition. Ashkenazy really understands the pacing of Sibelius to bring out the complete emotional depth. And THANK YOU for posting the wonderful sequence of images.

This is the most atmospheric En Saga I have heard.
Sibelius has always been special (certainly for me). I don't know how else to say it. Every opus finds its spot with me...

While some may still debate the overall greatness of Sibelius, none can debate the uniqueness he put into every work.
There is a profoundly brooding quality about this piece. I love the way Ashkenazy brings out the contrasting moods of this tone poem.
What a magically perfect interpretation!
We have here a great renderring of En Saga, a symphonic poem by Sibelius written by Sibeluis after Kullervo in 1892 under demand of the dirigent Kajanus who found it difficult to gather the performers for Kullervo and asked for a more modest composition. En Saga was revised in 1902. This is the final version. It is a masterwork. Ashkenazy renders it splendidly.

Thanks for the info re Kullervo. I guess it's demands are the main reason why it doesn't get so many performances. IMO it's not only his greatest achievement but one of the greatest by any composer, I absolutely love every moment of it!
A marvelous interpretation. I have been listening to a lot of recording of Sibelius works lately. I have to say Askenazy is my favorite interpreter of Sibelius. His recording posses a certain fire and cohesiveness.
I believe this is the finest and most deeply felt interpretation of this work I have ever heard. Thank you for posting.
You play Sibelius a little slower, and you savor the orchestrational richness. I'm glad Vlad did not hold back from conducting - his gifts in this area are to me even more obvious than with his piano mastery.
Awesome one. I love Sibelius' music.
Ashkenazy developed a particular enthusiasm for this music after his wife introduced it to him on record. He reveals this in a T.V. documentary he did on Sibelius music.

Have you seen the David Nupen film on Sibelius ? Absolutely fantastic ! The opening winter scenes are mesmerising. Ashkenazi is prominent in that film as a great Siberian: Wonderful ! God does exist ! You are right, Sibelius reaches into the depths of one’s soul.
La meilleure interprétation de En Saga que j'ai jamais entendue ! Askhenazy est de même un pianiste génial (écoutez son interprétation de la Berceuse de Chopin ! )
The clarinet solo is outstanding and it's not even difficult to plaxz, I love it so much.
Magnifique interprétation... et belles images qui illustrent la musique. BRAVO!!
I've not heard many versions of En Saga but it is hard to imagine it being done any better. Indeed Ashkenazy seems to have a natural feel for Sibelius and gets some wonderfully rugged sounds from his orchestra. Thanks for the upload !

Ashkenazy is the really great Rachmaninoff conductor too! His "Isle of the Dead" conducting is brilliant. He feels those "picteresque" pieces very good.

Impresionantes imágenes cargadas de una densa atmósfera, pero muy bellas, y excelente música magistralmente ejecutada..¡¡

this makes my blood circulation faster, ashkenazy did good job
... interessante filmische Begleitung der sehr farbigen und abschnitte-reichen Tondichtung - eine Art Lebensüberblick... sehr temperamentvoll vom Pianisten-Dirigenten interpretiert ...
Excellent music, performance, and video. Makes me want to round up some lads, put on some horned hats, and go roving in a long boat.
A hard fairy tail.... but positive... great music and well chosen background images!
Thanks for uploading!
0:00 > 4:10 is the most intense build-up I've ever heard in a classical piece, right after that it becomes a lot tamer, with a regular rhythmic theme. This violent tear off of reality is necessary for the suspension of disbelief when entering the realm of the legend and its unique narrative pacing. Just my interpretation
Sibelius 💜Ashkenazy💙
Un diamant ! Comment est-ce possible, un tel niveau de qualité sonore ?
Magnificent❤❤❤🖤💙💙💙
I think Ashkenazy understands Sibelius like few others - this is a mighty fine recording of En Saga, his Luonnotar with his wife is amazing, his 3rd and 6th symphonies are the best I've heard. No-one has yet beaten Rattle's old EMI 5th though!

IMO Karajan's late 50's recording of the 5th with the Philharmonia beats Rattle but I have to admit I'm not a great admirer of Rattle, somehow he always seems to disappoint. However I agree with you re this recording of En Saga- has to be one of the best ever!
The background images fit the mood of En Saga perfectly

12:08 this sound is stuck in my head.
Wonderful imagery, by the way.
En saga is onr of the first major pieces of Sibelius. Its general mood is rahter dark, with sudden and fugitive rays of light. The orchestra is very difficult to conduct. I think that Askhenazy has found the right way.
Fascinating attention to detail and indeed very atmospheric. As good as Karajans EMI recording.
Anyone know which orchestra is playing? It's brilliant.
All of Shibelius embodies the musical aesthetics unique to Shibelius and patriotism of Finland
Very uplifting, do chadows carry the light, or do I see just a token of many dreams?
I usually prefer Vanska's recordings, but this one is great.

En Saga...to the opening pages of Dvorak's Water Goblin??
What's this ?
!!!!!!
Not bad, but I still prefer Osmo Vänskä's and Esa-Peka Salonen's recordings overall, especially with the three groups of three single-note crescendos about ¾ of the way through (approx. 15:00-15:10 in this recording), which Vänskä and Salonen bring out boldly. Ashkenazy does appear to hint at them more than some other recordings I've heard, though.

How to make Sibelius sound like Debussy by Ashkenazy.
oooops . . . . found it!
It's very good, but i think the Lahti Symphony under Osmo Vanska do it better. The Finns seem to have a better understanding of it.
This Ashkenazy version is the best of all I heard. May I recommend the original septet version of En Saga kzread.info/dash/bejne/c4CJl7GahLS0lLQ.html
Not that slow at all, I think. A minute quicker than Furtwängler's classic recording, and I've seen conductors taking more than that.
fucking the missed information....ASHKENAZY AND PHILARMONIA? IS THE 1981 RECORDING ? THANKKKSSS
