Sibelius : En Saga - Ashkenazy*

Ashkenazy's slower and very atmospheric reading of En Saga beats every performance of it.......

I came here to hear what Sinitic peoples (like Finns, Chinese and Cantonese) have as their equivalent of pop music. And I realized they have much better taste in music than Italians or other western Europeans. If Sibelius is the undisputed Shifu of HK-pop, then I am officially proud to be a HK-pop fan.

We have here a great renderring of En Saga, a symphonic poem by Sibelius written by Sibeluis after Kullervo in 1892 under demand of the dirigent Kajanus who found it difficult to gather the performers for Kullervo and asked for a more modest composition. En Saga was revised in 1902. This is the final version. It is a masterwork. Ashkenazy renders it splendidly.

Thanks for the info re Kullervo. I guess it's demands are the main reason why it doesn't get so many performances. IMO it's not only his greatest achievement but one of the greatest by any composer, I absolutely love every moment of it!

You play Sibelius a little slower, and you savor the orchestrational richness. I'm glad Vlad did not hold back from conducting - his gifts in this area are to me even more obvious than with his piano mastery.

0:00 > 4:10 is the most intense build-up I've ever heard in a classical piece, right after that it becomes a lot tamer, with a regular rhythmic theme. This violent tear off of reality is necessary for the suspension of disbelief when entering the realm of the legend and its unique narrative pacing. Just my interpretation

I think Ashkenazy understands Sibelius like few others - this is a mighty fine recording of En Saga, his Luonnotar with his wife is amazing, his 3rd and 6th symphonies are the best I've heard. No-one has yet beaten Rattle's old EMI 5th though!

IMO Karajan's late 50's recording of the 5th with the Philharmonia beats Rattle but I have to admit I'm not a great admirer of Rattle, somehow he always seems to disappoint. However I agree with you re this recording of En Saga- has to be one of the best ever!

En saga is onr of the first major pieces of Sibelius. Its general mood is rahter dark, with sudden and fugitive rays of light. The orchestra is very difficult to conduct. I think that Askhenazy has found the right way.

Not bad, but I still prefer Osmo Vänskä's and Esa-Peka Salonen's recordings overall, especially with the three groups of three single-note crescendos about ¾ of the way through (approx. 15:00-15:10 in this recording), which Vänskä and Salonen bring out boldly. Ashkenazy does appear to hint at them more than some other recordings I've heard, though.
