Thanks for taking the time to walk us through your SHTF setup. You brought up a great topic and laid out an excellent overview of what to look for and why you chose the parts you did. I particularly liked the fact that you highlighted the value of an etched reticle in an optic. Well said. Prepping is such a multi-faceted topic with so many parts requiring space in the budget. I went the ‘lazy’ route and picked up a Colt AR-15 A4 and threw an ACOG on it. Are there “better” choices? Probably, maybe, I don’t try to spend time overthinking it. I chose a service rifle in a configuration that I have over a decade of experience with. Once I ate the cost of the rifle, and the ACOG in particular, I moved on to other preps that I think are more important. Heresy, I know. Lol. KZread and the prepper community has quite a fixation on the guns aspect of preparedness. While important, focusing on that at the expense of everything else is shortsighted at best. Thanks for putting this out. I look forward to more content from you in the future.

FYI, Daniel Defense makes a hand grip that includes the trigger guard for the just in case the trigger guard tabs broke. It locks in with the hand grip and the front pin tabs.

It's going to be impossible to determine if a part is not "in spec" until after you've already spent money on it. It is for this reason that you're better off buying a complete rifle if you're on a budget in my opinion. You don't have to worry about things being out of spec. With a build, it's too easy to make a mistake and have to end up spending more money to fix said mistake, especially if you're inexperienced (which most folks on a budget will be). Just get an SW MP Sport II. Still one of the best rifles I have ever bought and I have rifles from each price tier. It's battle ready out of the box imo. Or you can go with one of PSA's complete rifles.

I pay my few bills(no CC's), buy healthy food at the grocery(no fast food or gas station trash), dog food, and ammo to to feed the iron. It takes a little discipline but definitely doable. Great video! I have 4 BKing uppers (2 556 and 2 300s) they all run great. And those PA Micros are hard to beat for 0-200. As funds became available I built out my SHTF with all high end parts and magnification. Then I used my mid rage parts to build a decent, separate home defense gun… sadly I don’t want to loose my high end SHTF carbine to the BS aftermath of a home defense shooting.

A nitrided barrel isn’t weaker than a chrome lined, when used semi auto and with no full auto they last about the same, chrome lining is solely better for full auto cause it slows down the wear on the bore and rifling. If you aren’t shooting full auto you’ll never notice the life span between the two. That being said my go to rifle is a chf chrome lined barrel as well because if I’m laying down ALOT of rounds trying to suppress in a shtf situation I want the protection a chrome lined barrel offers

  • @NavySooner

@Navy Sooner not saying it was, but if the roll pin doesn't line up when it reaches the second tab, having a support behind it will ensure you don't snap the tab off. P.S. get a Stark Industries grip for that lower and put that thing to use! The Stark grip bypasses the trigger guard roll pin tabs. Hope this helped!

All in all, there’s no such thing as a budget build cause you’ll just end up spending more on upgrades so you may as well cry once. The other thing is the ammo, are you people aware it’s a pricey commodity today? Going through the expenses of purchasing a new rifle, optics etc is one thing but what about the Ammo. Having enough quality ammo and magazines for training and self defense will cost far more than any budget rifle will. I’d highly recommend #1 Daniel Defense cold hammer forged barrel with pinned gas block or an Aero Precision Hanson performance barrel. But most people won’t build and piece their rifles together, they’ll just buy the uppers and lowers already built out. Extra parts for shtf or gets pricey too. More videos should be made detailing the cost of and when someone wants an AR15 for self defense rather than what someone with years of purchasing recommends. Thanks and God Bless

Anderson and PSA make solid products for people who are not on a salary income. If you are an hourly employee then they've got you covered. If you can afford to go all the way then do it, if not then there is nothing wrong with a budget option.

Gonna spend a G for a rifle optic, light, sling, mags. You do not have to buy a high end AR, I have a Delton I have done slight mods to and would put it against my $1500 BCM As to chrome or CHF, SHTF, I'm really not gonna worry about shooting out the barrel, if SHTF hits, the amount of weaponry laying about will be surreal at first and if you're doing your due diligence your scavenging and hoarding what you find and ammo, food and water are gonna be the keys. And where you find ammo, you'll find weapons. The idea you'll have access to the tools to tear down and rebuild a weapon, your time will be better spent taking from your cache. Why I don't buy anything but drop in trigger kits. And why I have 5 ARs all 5.56, and 4 9mm pistols, 3 12 gage shot guns and have forsaken all others. I only need to spend so much money buying ammo and those three will fit the bill for defense and hunting anything in my area. And 10-12k rounds, most will never ever shoot that much to kill a barrel. I'm 6k through my Delton and shes still on factory barrel

Boomer Sooner. I’d say it’s really hard to build a shtf rifle on a budget. You’re better off setting aside 1200 dollars to get a blem BCM upper with free BCG they have going on right now. Pair it with an aero lower and put irons or an aimpoint PRO. Anything less than that (only a couple hundred less) starts getting into the territory of wasted money. The PA prism is fine but it’s only 75 cheaper than a PRO so I’d just do that
