I'm a Brit living in Riga... and I have never been to a Starbucks or McDonalds here. I know where various McDonalds are but I've not seen a Starbucks. The coffee shops here are much better anyway. But people are odd. I had a bunch of Irish friends pop over for the Marathon and it was almost impossible to get them to go other than to Aussie bars or McDonalds. You pay for a trip to somewhere interesting then go to McDonalds?? Try the local food and drink for crying out loud. You at least have a holiday story to tell - who'd be interested in your visit to a corporate burger bar?

Same I never go to a McDonalds or any other multi National fast food chains when travelling abroad. I always go for what the locals would normally eat

Actually, I was on holiday in Krakow in early July of this year and stayed in a wonderful hotel come hotel with a lovely room overlooking the main throroughfare in Krakow. The funny thing was-it was above and in the same building as the McDonalds and a complementary breakfast up to a total of 25 zloties came with the room. The breakfast was really nice and the seating area in the garden outside was one of the highlights of my trip Mind you, the pidgeons became a bit annoying after a while!

Hey justin! I moved to Riga almost a month ago. I watched so many of your videos before coming here and they were super helpful. Made moving to a foreign country so much less nerve wrecking. I haven't been to the central market yet even though I live very close to it, there's just so much construction around there which wasn't very inviting to be honest haha. I will make sure to have a look soon though! thank you for the great video! jauku dienu :)))

Correct me if I am wrong Justin, but there is more to the story of the hangars. They were originally erected near Aizpute, then moved to Riga. They were also taller when they were originally built and lowered when rebuilt in Riga. It is amazing they could be moved back then. Cheers!

  • @michaelmckelvey5122

Yes, you are right. As far as I know, these buildings only represent the top halves of the original buildings. I wonder what happened to the bottom halves?! Anyway, it is well worth going there to have a look as the indoor market is quite impressive and is one of the better things to see in Riga. Otherwise, there is a very tall impressive victory monument with a really nice walk along the river covered over by trees-it feels a little like walking through Paris. Otherwise, besides from the university building, Riga is one of the less interesting cities in the Baltic states as far as I am concerned.

@@michaelmckelvey5122 some of the old buildings in Agenskalns and also Agenskalns and Kalnciema markets are worth a visit. I was there for the Song and Dance Festival this year which was awesome. Ligo and Christmas Markets are also worth visiting. One can only look at so many buildings but the cultural experiences are certainly worth it. Cheers!

People are confused because you often speak four languages at the same time. Most people in Latvia only speak three at the same time.

Hello Janis, Thank you for your feedback and it is important to me to be diverse. However I am not a prejudice type of person, I appreciate nice people no matter their race, language, sexual orientation, religion or faith. Also my videos are not scripted, they unfold as they happen, so my control is limited. Is it just Russians that bother you, or French too??? Anything not Latvia? Would love to know a little more about what the issue is.

After fifty-odd years of occupation, Latvia, Lithuania, and Estonia all have sizable Russian populations. I remember being in Latvia and visiting a Russian Orthodox church and I remember being in Estonia by the beach and as far as I can remember, most of the people hanging around the beach were Russian speakers. Vilnius has a Soviet-built famous television tower and Riga has a motorcar museum with Leonid Brezhnev's Rolls Royce so clearly even today's Latvia is not altogether anti-Russian!

I'm so happy about Janis reaction... Latvia joined the EU and Europe is a multicultural continent but Janis is stuck in 1944 and still occupied by Russia... it's many people like Janis in Latvia, of course russian has the same problem in Latvia, they think that living still in the USSR..😅 The best solution is to ignore these very old school people and enjoy life. Life is a priceless gift, protect it good ☠️☠️☠️
