CRAZY LATVIAN NATIONAL PASS-TIME 🇱🇻

CRAZY LATVIAN NATIONAL PASS-TIME 🇱🇻
Join me as we travel with Andrei @vodking443 and Luba, to his hometown of Sigulda to experience the Latvian national pass-time of mushroom picking.
See how excited they get over seeing mushrooms and how their excitement did absolutely nothing for me.
After six torturous hours of walking through dense forest, getting eaten alive by mosquitoes, and freaking out about ticks, I have decided that supermarket mushrooms will do me just fine.
If you enjoy adventure videos from the former Soviet Union and Central and Eastern Europe, then grab your vodka, some zakusky and join me Andrei and Luba as we set out on a mushroom adventure near the city of Sigulda in Latvia.

I really like that you reacted to the forest😁😅 It was funny😀 and I understand why. You are not used to it. For us Latvians, it's one of our favorite weekend activities. Just being in the forest and feeling the peace and quiet and listening to the sounds of the forest. Nature is very important in our nation.

as a latvian who was raised with this, i've never considered it anything more than a fun outing (as long as you were safe w the ticks and all), and a chance to snack on forest fruits -- wild strawberries in particular. as i grew older, i realised how important it was to do this to have food for the cold months, but still never as something crazy. but seeing someone so foreign to it experience it, i can definitely see why you might think it's crazy :'D props to you for trying, though it definitely seems like you could've been warned more before venturing into the forests c': also the walnut biscuits are a childhood favourite of mine, the caramel in the middle is just insane. wonder if you've tried a kartupelis though? the dessert, i mean. it's a cake mass with cocoa and sometimes it's coated in dessicated coconut, and it's shaped like a potato! anyway, been loving your latvia videos, since i first saw a video of yours a week ago, hope the mosquitos haven't ended you + you're doing well!

Soviet, so not really Latvian. Same goes for fishing with a fishing rod and ice fishing, basket weaving, gardening, collecting wild berries and similar activities that got popularized by government of Latvian SSR. Each of them had periodicals dedicated to the particular activity. Identical in neighboring former iron curtain countries.

What are you talking about? My grandparents picked mushrooms and berries before soviet times. Finland and Sweden wasn't under iron curtain why they pick mushrooms and berries? What is a point of these lies, so weird.

there is literally tens of books and press release on each topic you named (tips and tricks how to collect goods, fish, hunt, trap wild animals, and how to prepare all that stuff) from 1920-30ties Latvian Republic long before soviet occupation.

Also this is literally what hunter gatherers did, don't thin they had Ussr periodicals. Even Neanderthals did fishing, hunting and gathering. The more I think the more ridiculous this comment is. Gardening and basket viewing? My family had farm for hundreds of years in the same place. Nobody could buy plastic or metal baskets in the shops at that time.

@@arita2002 My comment still stands. Swedes, Finns and other non iron-curtain northern Europeans don't do these activities at nearly the (ridiculous) percentage former Soviets do. There is difference between foraging for sustenance(like hunter-gatherers did, when human population was 1/1000 of that of today) and state encouraged waste of time in a modern industrial population.
