    Hi Terry! What an awesome place! The history there along with great food made it a great tour. I loved Svetlana's proud comment about the unique beer " you can't get this in the U.S.". She is so lovely and kind, and patient when you veer off course. I hope you two have a great experience and thanks for taking us along. Onward and upward!

    Great video, come to Latvia more often! :) If you still have time, you have to visit Agenskalns Market (Hagensberg Markt) which is about a 20-30 minute walk from the place you stayed in Old Town, over the Daugava River, or it takes a short tram journey, Swetlana definitely should know it. It has been renovated, respecting its history, recently and basically is the best market in Riga to visit right now, it is not big. The Agenskanls Market building was built in 1911 and is a fine example of 20th-century rational Art Nouveau. Riga has more than 800 Art Nouveau buildings, its highest concentration in the world, so Riga is widely known as the capital of this style. In Alberta Street, there is a museum on it. Historic Vidzemes Market, you started your video with, which is closed nowadays, will be restored in a few years and derelict now. And the largest market in Riga and the whole of Europe is Riga Central Market, it truly has metal structures that were used as Zeppelin hangars in WWI by Germans, but not in Riga, in Kurland (Kurzeme), which is in western Latvia, about 150-200km from Riga. The market was built by the city of Riga in the 1920s, in early Art Deco style, is protected by UNESCO, and all the stones (bricks) you can see there are obviously were not used for Zeppelins. The metal beams were moved from Kurland (Kurzeme), after WWI to Riga and used to construct this market as the most modern in the world at the time, with industrial fridges (that was new in the world), trains coming onto the roof at the local station (yes, exactly) etc. You can find out about the history of this market on its website or in Wikipedia, in English. Right now, the whole area is being reconstructed, including the market, as Rail Baltica and the new Central Riga Rail Station are being built, it will be finished in a few-+ years, so perhaps, this is the last time you see it like this - "soviet" and dirty :) (btw, in the soviet times it looked very different, I mean the station and the market, I was born in 1977 so I still remember :) Good luck!

    Thanks Erwin! I know about the Agenskalns. I hope to visit it because there's a place that makes an awesome kachapuri I think it's called lol sorry I'm sure I spelled it wrong. Anyway, anything that looks kinda like a pizza with an egg in the middle, I'm in! Thanks brother for your kind and welcoming words.

    @@BarefootVlogger Thanks Terry! By the way, that "moonshine vodka" neither is moonshine nor vodka :) I believe, the name was given more than 10 years ago, when Russian tourists were big in Riga and producers had to make it understandable to them. It is honey brandy of high quality, and it has no colour. They have a few shops around Riga, but definitely, their website is the best way to find out about them and how it's made: samogon lv By the way, in Agenskans market, I believe there are more small artisan local producers of strong alcohol (different brandy types, vodka, schnapps etc) to try. It is hard to believe, but Latvia has even wine produced from local grapes since the 14-16th century in western Latvia, In places like Sabile, there are tasting tours to the vineyards etc. They call it the Most Northern Wine in the World :), their website: visit sabile lv en wine-hill-of-sabile And there are thousands of types of wine (it is called wine in Latvia) produced locally from local fruits or even of birch juice. So much to try :) Also, you might find interesting Open Air Anthropological Muzeum, which is in Jugla, it is basically a park on the Riga border on Jugla lake shore, in the east of the city, it has preserved wooden houses, churches, barns etc from the 16th+ century, from all over the country brought there in the 1920s, one can see as local peasants lived in different parts of Latvia in different ages (older than colonial history in the US), this is their website: brivdabasmuzejs lv en And of course, you may find interesting all the castles, little medieval towns and baroque palaces around Riga, I am sure you met plenty in your research before the trip :) Or, I just remembered, if you like soviet stuff, you can visit KGB headquarter in Riga, they have it as it was left by Russians in 1991, with all its prison etc. Foreigners find it interesting, it is in the centre, Brivibas and Stabu streets corner, their website: okupacijasmuzejs lv en Good luck buddy!

    J-walking is a big no no in Latvia. Nice video thank You. I'm a native Latvian. Was born in Riga in 1983. ☺ Most people use the opportunity to sneak in those toilets while somebody is coming out. If only there is not an old grumpy babushka taking charge. In Latvian moonshine is "kandža" [kandzha], or in Latgale - Šmakovka [Shmakovka].

    In fact, the market buildings were built exactly as market buildings and no zeppelin has ever been in them. In the construction of these buildings, metal structures were used, from which the Germans wanted to build hangars in another place.

  • @BarefootVlogger

    @BarefootVlogger

    8 ай бұрын

    You're half right. The main structures of the market are five pavilions constructed by reusing old German Zeppelin hangars. Zeppelins were never in the hangars at the current market location--but they were in the hangars at their original location in Vaiņode (also somewhere written as Vainodo, Vainede, Vaynede, Vaynodo, and Toyvanede) a former USSR air base in Latvia, located 31 kilometres (19 mi) south of Skrunda. So, to to say "no zeppelin has ever been in them" is not true. They were, just in a different location. During World War I Vainode was a German airship base with two 240 metres (787 ft) long airship hangars. After the war, they were dismantled and parts of them reused as top cover of Riga Central Market's pavilion buildings.
