Should you Hibernate, Shut down, or put your PC to sleep?

Ғылым және технология

Some people put their PCs to sleep to save energy, some people DISABLE sleep so they always have access, but what's the best solution for you? Whether a PC should be set to hibernate, sleep, or be shut off depends on the situation, and your personal preferences regarding gluten-free food. Don't ask me how that works in, it just does.

I turn off my PC, unplug it, and then completely disassemble it and place all of the components in static resistance bags, and then I reassemble it when it's time to start back up.

Btw I sleep from 11pm to 5am and my schedule is -Eat Breakfast + Coffee -Morning Jog -Work -1.5 Hours at the gym -Sleep And this schedule requires me to sleep the same amount of time every night so I can fit all of these into my schedule every day. For probably 4ish years I put my computer in sleep mode each night and rarely powered it down completely. Now the past 3ish years or so I have been powering it down each night instead of putting it in sleep mode. I noticed some improvement in my computers 'health' having opted into powering down nightly and will definitely continue to do so having lots of experience with both. But everyone's gonna have a different opinion I'm sure, and when all said and done, my computer worked fine with either method. && despite having a cheap harddrive I can spare the 7seconds of bootup time... its not like I sit there an watch it anyway pft turn it on and go make some coffee son. Is it still 7 seconds of boot time if your there for 0seconds of it? :P

+Daxxie GFX (Gaming) It's like what Linus said, doing this isn't going to dramatically deteriorate the components to the point where they're going to die in a relatively short amount of time. Every component dies eventually. The point is to have them last long enough for your needs. For example, I tend to replace my GPU every 2-3 years (I usually get the highest or second highest tier in a given period of time). Because of this, it's of less concern to me if my particular practices leads to my GPU having a greater risk of failing at year four instead of that same risk existing at year six. This is of a greater concern to those that replace their GPUs less frequently, and of zero concern to those that upgrade every year.

Best advice is to hibernate instead of sleep if you are going to one of the 2 instead of shutdown... but I suggest that you save your work first and exit if you were typing something in a password protected document for example. It does not matter if you have a hard disk drive or not as either way it should not take too long to turn back on, it should still be faster then if you just booted up the computer instead.

Then I come back to it and check things -- Facebook etc. Then when I step away again I put it in sleep mode. But at night, when I go to bed, I turn it off for those 6 to 8 hours. Then it's rinse & repeat starting in the morning. 1. Use, sleep @ day breaks. 2. Bed time, off.

watching this in 2019 i learned something My brother has 32 gigs of ram and was getting blue screens. I asked him what he was doing, which was mostly video games, opening 1000 applications, and *putting his computer to sleep at night* It turned out after many months of periodic troubleshooting that one of his ram sticks was not working properly. Something about read/write errors when we ran a ram test. When we pulled that ram stick out, it solved the problems I figure what happened must be putting the computer to sleep was putting a chunk of data onto the bad ram stick and when it restarted, the bad data caused an unrecoverable error leading to the Blue screen.

I'm not an expert. But, from hearing experts talk about this, I think one can fairly assume that the only thing that could potentially die from turning off your pc every day is your HDD, which is one of the cheapest components on your pc (atm, you can get 1tb hdd for 30 bucks). You should back up important data anyways. And that's only after years of use, so I think it's worth it, since pretty much pc runs really smoothly after a fresh start.

Great video,I have started using the sleep mode for this new PC build that I recently put together because as you mention in your video there are concerns as to how much wear and tear completely shutting down a PC can cause on the PC components.I bought SSD drives which is what I will be using from now on and I have to say that this new PC build is fantastic, once the PC goes into sleep mode if I didn't know better I would swear that the PC is completely powered off and waking the PC is a snap.I decided to use sleep mode because when the PC is running the cooling fans are also running which means that the PC is drawing in dust when I am not using it.I decided against completely powering off the PC because I share my PC with my other half and she doesn't like having to turn the PC on from a cold boot so sleep mode in my opinion fits the bill perfectly.Thank you for another great video and may God bless you and your family.

Waking up from hibernation with an SSD is way faster than with an HDD but it obviously isnt faster than booting normally because booting normally with an SSD is also faster than with an HDD. Especially when running WIndows 8 or 10: Those have a feature called Fast Boot which is basically semi hibernation. It writes everything system relevant to the hard drive but not the programs you are running so that it will boot very quickly. And what do you think is faster: Copying 1GB from SSD to RAM or copying 2-8GB? It just depends on your needs. Maybe youre running many programs sorted in a special way on your monitors. Then the few seconds faster boot isnt worth it preparing everything again, instead of just hibernating.

I get into about this all the time. My pcs have been running non stop for the last 30 years, all of them still run. Temp changes are what kills circuitry especially if you have pc in cold area. Starting it up heats up the circuits and causes expansion and contraction when cooling off. It doesnt take a genius to see how this can affect your main board over time. Let them run and they always atay at same temp and avoid expansion /contraction.

I should really turn it off, but once we unplugged it by accident for about 5 seconds and it was all still there and came on in about 3 seconds; so I don't think it uses much power in sleep mode, I never hear the fan.

I just never leave the pc ever! I even set up a program to pretend to be me while my head is on the desk (those ergonomic wrist pads make great pillows), it opens and plays random KZread videos, scans the drives, runs random video games and even opens explorer and pretends to scan thru random folders ;-) But seriously I usually leave it on 24/7. I'm still using some drives since 2006, others I've retired and swapped over to new SSD's before they failed and only had 1 completely fail that I couldn't recover data on it anymore. I can still hear the god awful clicking noises it made before it went south for the winter. Thank god it was only big enough for windows 3.1 so no great loss there. I do miss having to load up 7 5 1/4" floppy disks every boot cycle. Gave me just enough time to shower, make breakfast, have a coffee, read the paper and do a load of laundry. Yup the initial cold power up took its toll on the older drives over time, but the drive berrings never failed. I used to have a program that measured drive life expectancy and every now and then a little icon with crossed fingers would pop up lol. Thank you for a great and informative video! I LOVED the Airplane movie reference!

Great video as always Linus. Just a question, don't all electronics components have an Average Rated Lifetime Hours ? Meaning that leaving the PC On all the time is a matter of necessity (Server, Remote Access, etc) rather than a convenience. Although I'm almost certain that the average rated lifetime hours of PC components is very high, but it still is there. Please correct me if I'm wrong. :-)

I am a temporary help worker in the federal public service of Canada. If I'm using a desktop computer it depends: first of all, if I have to go to meeting, go on a break or go to lunch I lock the computer and it goes to sleep, second, at the end of the day I will most likely finish whatever I'm doing, log out and shut down, third, sometimes a broadcast email comes out regarding an software update that IT wants to push out to affected computers - if this happens, then I leave the computer on so that they can run a batch file to make the installation happen.

I used to just leave my PC on all the time, or put it in sleep mode, but my neighborhood has frequent power outages, basically anytime it rains, the power goes out. Plus i lost one PC due to a lightning striking a tree outside my house (took out my modem and tv cable box as well). I work 12 hour shifts every day, so my PC is not in use for up to 18 hours a day, so i just shut it down, and unplug it so i don't have to worry about power surges or lightning strikes while im away at work, but i power it up the moment i get home every day. But when im home on the weekends, i usually just leave it on all the time, and just shut it down and unplug it when a storm is coming through. Been doing it like this for about 20 years, and haven't had any issues with it. Although i have heard from some sources that liquid cooled PC's its better not to leave them turned off for long periods of time (like many days or weeks) as bacteria can build up in the water, and gunk up the insides of your pump, ect..

Same here. The weather tends to change pretty quickly and I don't want to risk leaving it on when a storm is passing through. I do have a Ups, but it's not guarantee that it will stop lightning from damaging my system.

Thank you. On Windows 7 I would put it in sleep mode by pressing the moon on my keyboard pretty much whenever I leave the computer for awhile (hours or overnight). When I converted to Windows 10 for some reason this keyboard function no longer works. The only option I seem to have is hibernate or shutdown so now when I leave for several hours or overnight I just put it in hibernate. I did like sleep tho because the computer wouldn't be shutting off all the time.

Windows 10 seems not to have distinct sleep and hibernate modes any more, or at least they aren't immediately visible on the Start menu. Obviously you can configure exactly what happens in the power settings, but most users probably won't do that, or will do it exactly once and then forget about it until the next PC upgrade. While some of my other PCs have been wonky on sleep, I've never had any noticeable stability issues on this one. I put it to sleep overnight and if I'm going to be out of the house for more than a few hours. I only reboot if it's demanded by software updates, or I let it automatically restart when something has updated in the background. Since it's on an SSD, the difference between boot and resume times is minimal, but I do appreciate having all my stuff still running when it wakes up.

My PC along with all my other hardware (except my WIFI) are all plugged into a powerbar. So I shutdown the PC fully, then hit the power button and it is all completely off. I tried hibernation which was pretty kewl at first, really fast startups, even on my HDD, BUT... it has a MUCH slower SHUTDOWN, as it has to save all that data, and I found that over time, the shutdown times got longer and longer until I got fed up and switched back to a normal, full shutdown. I don't mind the startup wait, as when I get up in the morning, I always spend a couple of hours with my wife before I do any work on my PC, so I walk into my computer room, hit the powerbar button, which turns it all on, then I leave the room to be with the wife. My logon is automatic and I have my windows updates set to automatic download and install, so by the time I am ready to use my computer, it is all warmed up and ready to go with any updates downloaded and installed. Been doing this for literally decades and I still have 20G HDDs that still work just fine, so this doesn't wear anything out. As for case fans, well, I upgrade my PC about once every 10 years, fans and all, so that's never been an issue either. I think people fantasize about potential problems with never happen to the majority of the population.

I have had pc since the first one came out in the 80’s. i upgraded every 5 years or so. I only turned them off when a reboot was needed. I do not remember many failures. One of my old old mechanical hard drives finally failed after at least 10 years. I usually used old hard drives as extra internal ones when I upgraded computers. You give great advice. Your videos are very detailed and as accurate as can be. Many people just like to mess with their computers. They go nuts when it takes 10 seconds longer to boot up because they boot up many times a day. I always left mine on all the time. The first pcs did not have operating systems with hibernate or sleep modes. My first one only had DOS. windows wasn’t invented yet. I agree with everything you say. I just don’t care about saving a few cents per day on electricity and prefer to only spend the time necessary on my computer. So leaving it on suits my personality and lifestyle. I think I will consider using that hybrid mode that I never understood until this video. Thanks for a great video.

I have worked on high-end HP workstation CPUs with all other components coming together in a manufacturer-assembled combo at my workplace, and I have noticed the systems of employees who leave them on for 24x7 have turned sluggish, hang a lot and sometimes go into boot issues. I used to shut mine down and it never behaved like theirs do. I have very much continued doing the same with my laptop and it boots just fine within 20 sec, with my OS placed on an M.2 SATA stick (not a faster NVMe or PCIe) and 5400rpm HDD for file storage.

+Raccoon water is pretty simple now as long as your are just cooling your CPU. 1 reservoir, radiator, a pump, and some tubes. A correct fan setup is just as efficient

I never turn off my laptop (it's 8yrs old). The problem I faced it that the hard drive was failing so I replaced it with a120gb SSD and installed the old hard drive as a secondary storage. Now it's working perfectly without shutting down.

I've had a Macbook pro bought new in 2011 and used to cut it off every night, but began leaving it on all the time about 5 years ago,.. the battery was supposed to be replaced in 2015 according to the battery check, but I can take it off charge, leave it running, but closed all day, and when I open it up it'll only be down to 85% and charges right back up....I use it many hours every day.

maybe if the pc was idle yeah, it doesn't draw a whole heap of power while it's idle so I could believe it. I always keep my PC on though so I started mining crypto while I sleep so earn a very small amount of extra cash on the side lol

@BAT EATER nicehash is a pretty popular one, no programs/sites require an actual mining rig, all of them can use your desktop pc. it's just that it isn't a feasible option to mine with a desktop pc because a dedicated bitcoin miner will have a much higher hashrate compared to your gpu/cpu. i only mine overnight while i sleep and mine roughly $2/night, it's more beer money than anything.

I always shut down, saves power, reduces dust buildup and allows your system to unload random crap that builds up in the memory, so next time you turn your computer on its fresh and ready to go.

I don't see how letting the dust settle would reduce dust buildup? As long as you have good filters and airflow leaving it on would be better?

Fans push more air (and more dust with it) throughout your components.

  • @SamPhoenix_

But good air flow keeps the the air (and dust) moving and stops it from settling on top of all your components, so as long as you have good filters (therefore reducing the amount of dust that comes in with the air) surely just making sure the dust doesnt settle would be better?

What do you mean by "good air flow"? A "wind tunnel" like one? Based on my expirience the dust sticks to all air resistant parts of the components and it doesn't go away with the flow. I use an air pump to clenup fans and radiators. And I do agree that you need filters, but without good sealed case it won't help as much as it can.

I just don't like having to sit through a long boot up, it wastes time. Hibernating is basically the same thing, only it boots up way quicker and it brings you back where you were so you don't have to open up all of your programs again.

Sleep if you are gonna be gone for a little bit, Like grabbing lunch, going to pick up someone etc. Hibernate if you are gonna be gone for a while; If you are like going to bed or to the beach, etc. Shut down if you want Shut down if you are moving a computer somewhere else.

One of my old pcsI left on all the time with the exception of going on vacation. I went to work one day and my air conditioner died on a Florida July day. Actually had a componant pop of my motherboard. Thankfully it was a cheap computer but I'll never leave it on like that anymore. Using an ssd now, I turn it off when I'm going to be off it for a few hours.

  • @youandiryan
    @youandiryan5 жыл бұрын

I almost always just completely shut it down. Sometimes I'll put it to sleep if I'm going to use it again very soon. But rarely. I usually just shut it down I have an SSD so it boots up real fast anyway. I never leave it running all the time. No matter what people say it actually does wear out your hardware quicker.
