Should 16-Year Old Girls Be Allowed To Marry In Indonesia? [Street Interview] | ASIAN BOSS

Could you ever imagine getting married while being in high school? In Indonesia, it is estimated that about 1 out 7 Indonesian girls get married before the age of 18. Recently, the Indonesian government proposed legislation to raise the minimum age for marriage from 16 to 19. The question is, how do the people of Indonesia feel about this proposed change? And why are there are so many cases of child marriage in Indonesia in the first place? We hit the streets of Jakarta to find out.
The opinions expressed in this video are those of individual interviewees alone and do not reflect the views of ASIAN BOSS or the general Indonesian population.
Special thanks to our Asian Boss team in Indonesia.

I'm Indonesian. In my neighborhood most girls get married around 16-19 yo. The youngest one is 14 yo. But mostly because the girls get pregnant before marriage. I'm a 28 yo woman and haven't married yet. And I know my neighbors are gossiping about me especially because I'm still dating my boyfriend in long distance relationship. The pressure on me to get married is unbearable. I get used to hear this from them very often, "Leave that man! Just marry someone without dating!"

Marry without dating? Like you're some kind of commodity to be trade off? Wtf... And you're 28? So what? You're not old. Don't give in to the pressure. Do whatever you want. Marry because you want to, not because your neighbors gossip about it.

As Indonesia myself, i disagree with "young marriage" I'm 21 years old, and I'm still not ready to get married. You have to mentally prepare, and take big responsibility too. Cus, when someone is too young, they still unstable to know what's right and wrong. some say it is to avoid adultery, which not. Marriage life isn't always about sex and lovey dovey fantasy. I'm not married. But, i know how hard it is when you step on it. Taxes, need money, take care of the children, Clean the house, work, your child is crying, get yell at work/house, arguments, etc. I see so many cases like: Abandoned child, Divorce, Arguments everyday in front of the child, etc. Edit: why I'm telling this? Cus so many who already married, even my family said so. Its not easy yes. But, hey if you young marriage its okay, I hope you have a best life! Its happen alot. I'm still act like a child, and still want to be free before ready to get married someday. I'm still pursuit my dream too, and work hard for the future. (Edit: if you the person who's agree with young marriage, that's fine. People have different point of view. But, this is just my personal opinion.) Update: in Indonesia there's a new policy for someone who going to married and need to test if they ready for married yet, and telling them how after married will be. Like I said: how to paying taxes, how to do when baby born, etc. If you want to read that, you can google it. I think cus so many cases like family abused, divorce, etc. And the government want to drop the rate. But, idk maybe change? Maybe not? I mean that's good to have like that.

I'm Indonesian. One of my housemaid married when she was 15 years old. Now, she is 23 years old and don't have a child. Her husband is very poor and she had to work as a housemaid (she was work at factory before, but she don't like it). I ask her once. "After you married for 8 years, are you happy?" She said "No, better marry after 25 YO and have enough savings". And i have a cousin that married when she was 16 YO (now 24 YO). Her life is miserable, she is divorced with her alcoholic ex husband who likes to beat her and having affair, she lived in rent apartment with 6 YO son, selling food and cake. For me. Marry is not just about love. But, responsible, affection and loving.

Many east asia countries share similar problems. Lacking of sex education before 18 YO, avoiding but sometimes happening to have sexual intercourse out of marriage, and with a culture that strongly disagree with that. IMHO, I do think sex education is the key solution. FYI, I'm Chinese.

In Malaysia, where I'm from, we're already facing this issue of child marriage. I do not want Indonesia to go through the same problem. The best way to prevent child marriage in any country is not only for governments to set the minimum age for marriage, but also for every woman, regardless of income background, to have the best and most decent education possible, so that they can economically support themselves.

Ekmal Sukarno i Think regulating arrange marriage needs to be a thing too. Though I don’t know how religious the arrange marriage in indonesia is like say here in the Philippines the minimum age is 18 but due to religious reasons muslim communities can marry at a younger age usually through arrangement. So yeah that’s probably why some people do not agree in increasing the age.

  • @ekmalsukarno2302

Jessie Briones In the Philippines, Muslims are a minority, so they tend to live by their own rules. In Malaysia, on the other hand, any laws that set the minimum age for marriage will definitely impact its Muslim-majority population. Then again, child marriages in Malaysia are mostly common in rural areas, where laws regarding the minimum age of marriage are not implemented strictly enough.

It was not an arranged marriage, she married because she was in love. But please don't force yourself if you're not ready, you're gonna regret it, and it might cause some traumatize or stress... In other side I don't see the problem if the girl is ready, mature, responsible and want it, but under the age of 18 it's young I think. My old grandma (in Algeria) was forced to marry at age of 16, she escaped by the window the day of the marriage lol (it was canceled after)

Beside 18 age legalization is a country law not a world law. The law that allow you to marry when you're wise, can take responsibility have reach puberty and have a body to bear child and most people reach puberty when they're above 14 year old like what our pass predecessor did when electricity still not exist yet but It's not fit in this modern day nowadays since they have a school and a goal they want to achieve, but I think legal to marry only when you're 18 mostly only apply to a man not to a girl.

Most of the cases, true to the answers, are happening in the rural area. They usually do not have aspiration or even education that makes them think about something bigger. So they get married because that’s what the supposedly normal “next step” for them, to build family. Also the cultural aspect where girls over 25 is considered “late” or old to get married plays a role in normalizing young marriages. I do think that even though we still have a long way to go, raising the minimum age requirement to get married is a good step forward to help young girls escape underage marriages.

They surveyed these things, indeed yeah in rural the cases can be because of teenage pregnancies or poverty, like the parents letting their kids get married ( around 16/17, can't continue hs). While in the big cities mostly because of teenage pregnancies. But it's still not common even in kampungs or rural areas, try you go to kampungs or small towns in other islands etc. There's no way that people said something like common when the cases mostly from 5/7 because childs/teenagers that marriages out of wedlock. In the rural areas, they get married above 18 y.o/after hs especially if they come from below middle class or poor. If you check tho, Indonesia is not the country in the list of the highest child marriage rate as of 2021.

I'm 19 years old and live in a small city. My parents never wants me to get married at such a young age, almost all of my friends are the same too. Not much people i know here got married right after they graduate from high school, they all went to college. Well for me, personally. I never ever want to get married. I don't even have any plans to date someone, I've been having this thought since i wad in primary school. I think that marriage is something that made me have to lose everything i have just to raise kids and take care of my family?? Sorry but that's a waste of time for me. I think that being alone is great, I don't spend my money that much, and if i did, i would only spend it on my parents. I really want to bring them traveling around the world, i want to buy them a house, i want them to just relax without thinking of having to work. That's all I've ever wanted in my entire life. Also, having kids are hard as hell and i don't want to be part of that. I don't like kids either, they're pretty annoying

Well I suppose you are a great child and a blessing to your parents but its okay to think about yourself too. If being single gives you joy in life go ahead and pursue it. I was so stubborn that I will become monk when I was around 10 and now I am 19 I want to date. Its your wish though at the end of the day. But its okay to explore other options and if you don't like it you can always disregard it.

Yup it's called Halal Courtship. Even that one needs to be educated in how to be conducted properly. However, with widespread ignorance, low education, all these traditions it will be difficult to adapt or even see the beauty of it. Most times, the Halal Courtship is being misused thus people see the option of dating which is by right not allowed in Islam as the concept of Ikhtilat which is the Intermingling of Sexes. People who misused the Halal Courtship and making it look bad which leads to people prefering dating and thus committing more sins are also bad as well. Hhh, we are not to commit sins. 1. Teenagers want to try out cause want to experience. That's also a stupid logic. Can be solved with more governmental education on sex awareness and religion education on sins. These could curb the sex-out-of-marriage leading to pregnancy which leads to child marriages. 2. Child marriages as a result of tradition. This one also goes with governmental education not much of religious education because this is in the jurisdiction of culture and mindsets. Parents need to view statistics and be educated on harmfulness of child marriages and even have parental counselling/how to be a parent classes. Simply marry off daughter because can't afford...is sooo much an economic and poverty issue. This could be solved with more support in job-related sectors which could help alleviate people out of poverty. With more out of poverty, more will have jobs or think about their future first and not marriages. This will lead to decrease in child marriages. Kind of a chain reaction with all parties at fault one way or another. All problems are intertwined and interconnected with one another.

Hello, you have the age mixed up for USA! The minimum age to get married here is generally 18. That’s also the age of consent here as well as the official age of adulthood. So how do shows like “16 and Pregnant” happen? Well nobody can dictate when you choose to get pregnant. However, if you’re 16 and your partner is 18 or over, your parents may be allowed to take your partner to court for statutory rape. Not every state has this law yet but I live in California and that’s the law here. Can’t speak for South Korea, but all I can say is that 18 is also still too young to be making decisions like marriage. I think 21 is a smarter age to determine maturity and adulthood.

Honestly I feel like you shouldn't get married until you're at least 21 years old. That's when your brain is fully developed (it's between 21-25); It'd be pretty difficult for you to make rational decisions before then, because literally the 'rational' part of your brain is still developing (and it's only HALF way finished at 18). You also most likely have to go to school at 16, so there's a TON of stuff you still need to learn and figure out in life, you're so immature with hopefully a lot of oppurtunities, you should get all that handled and make sure you know what you want before settling down...

Mostly young marriage happened because of teen pregnancy. In Indonesia, it's a taboo thing to talk about sex education, yet the older generation still tell racy jokes freely. Once they found out their children get pregnant, they only forced them to get married, as if there's no other solution. I also ever read news where a raped victim being forced to marry her raper. That's a nightmare. Also, since the older generation getting married in such a young age, like my grandma get married at age 16, they still see young marriage as a normal thing just because that's how they used to be. Ngl, as soon I turned 20 and still in college, my family asked me a lot about when will I'm getting married and they considered my age as the perfect age to get married and have children. Now that I'm 23 and still haven't introduce my boyfriend to my family, they legit think I'm not normal. And from my perspective, my generation or at least people around my age have no big interest in marriage because we see how messed up our parents marriage is, I have many friends whose parents are divorced, some of their parents also abandoned them and they have to struggle alone.

Early marriage in Indonesia occurs due to several factors, there are from the family economy, lack of education, violation of norms, or arrangement marriage... But most of them occur because of pregnancy outside of marriage ... a lot of my friends or acquaintances who get married early and don't continue their education. As a result, their lives are only focused on how they earn money for their daily needs, without being able to dream or explore their own abilities. Its so sad to see them do their life only for giving birth, earn money, take care of their husband/wife without do something more than that. Also I'm agree that the mindset of my people is need to be changed. Even our government create a law about that we still so stubborn and still in the mind that the woman only ends up being a wife.. the only thing we need to change is the people also. Thankfully my parents are not really persue me to get married or having a partner..They give me the freedom to choose what is best to live.

Isn't a big part of it what's scientifically considered a "child" now? We've reached a point in the modern world now where we know a lot more about brain chemistry and maturity. The cultures are just catching up. A century ago an unmarried 18 year old would have been odd to say the least. But then the father would have been able to support the family too. And life expectancy was much lower, as was population. I think that in the modern world mating young is pointless, but in the old world it was a survival mechanism. Especially considering infant mortality. There are still cultures where it's considered unlucky to name a baby until it's two years old because of the high risk of infant death. It's a pretty complex issue that's also quite visceral for many.

Even if the law raises the minimum age for getting married, there may still be young marriage. In some rural places in China, the convention is that 16-20 year olds will unofficially ‘marry’ each other and wait to be officially registered as couples after they reach the minimum age. They have the wedding ceremony, live together, have children, and are recognized as husband and wife by their community. And the government can’t do anything about it. Because the law says consensual sex between two people who’re older than 14 is not considered rape. In those places young girls may still face pressure from relatives if they don’t get married at a young age, even though the law says ‘no, you can’t be married this young’. I know one of my classmates in elementary school who went back to her hometown to get married when she was 15. 15! She was not physically forced cuz in such case we could call the police. But I think she would definitely prefer to stay in large cities and go to college if there was not such a ‘convention’. That convention thing is sometimes more powerful than laws.

My parent married at 20ish yo. And my generation at 25ish yo. The main reason is Economy. Modern lifestyle is not cheap. In the past there are no electricity bill, there are no water bill, there are no gas bill, etc. If you live a traditional live, than its cheap, thats why economy is not a major problem. Just little bit of romance is needed, not a hyperbole romance shown in the movies. People marry simply because of the necessity to have a descendant, to help when they got old. The second reason is Influence from other culture, especially Western Europe.

I am from the Philippines. I am public grade school teacher in a remote barangay (village) where I also lived. I am handling third grade class, 2 years ago I have a student aging 13, due to poverty, she still in 3rd grade that time. Unfortunately, she wasnt unable to finished her third grade due to early marriage. Her husband is just 19 years old, 5 years years older than her. It saddens me that at that age she got married. It was her parents decision. A beautiful and smart girl ended up getting married untimely. That is not the case alone, a number of young boys and girls (elekentary and high school students) got married in the past years and until today. There is a girl, a high school student just celebrated her birthday at 18 and in the next day she got married. This is reality! It is so alarming her in my place! I can't imagine what would be their life in the future. They came from less fortunate families and some of them have their children already. Life is hard here,I also blamed their parents of allowing their children got married at early ages. But they are accountable of their children, it is not my business. Feel so sorry seeing them struggling. By the way I am 29 years old teacher but single for a long time. I am the only one out of 12 teachers in our school who is single and no child😄😄😄

Some teen marriages happen because of financial difficulties.. especially in rural area. Often after elementary school, children can’t continue to go to school because their parents couldn’t afford it. Most of them working as tenants farmers. They either go to bigger cities to get a job as domestic assistant or sent to marry some wealthier farmland owners to repay their parents’ debt... sometimes as second or third wife. Plus in rural area, if you are above 20 years old and still unmarried, you are considered as spinsters and leftovers. Sad, but still happening here.

The real issue in here, Indonesia only developed less than 20% of it's country. Outside Java/Bali Island & central city on each provinces, the country is still undeveloped and backward. The big city teens vs town teens are far difference. The 16's teens in big city still spoiled kids, while the small town teens already work on their farms or trading in market since 12yo. The small town teens already an adult at the age of 16 and all they're going to do next is to marry and make their own family.

It can be some reasons, most of the time it's financial reason and religion reason. They believed it's better to get married faster so you're not easily attracted by random opposite genders and devoted to your one and only partner instead. It's also depends on the parents as well. Personally, my mom won't let me marry until I both financially, educationally and emotionally matured, just so I won't be deceived by my own future partner. Grateful for that tbh.

As a 23-yr-old Indonesian living in a village where most people do not consider high education important, I receive some very inconvenient treatment in my neighborhood. They're gossipping me who haven't been married until now like.. every day. I know, when I'm away for study, the burdens that my mother has to carry is no joke. Well, I'm still focused on my study and career, so I can't think of getting married ofc. But it's just hard when I come home and I have to face the views that consider me too late to marry already. Crazy really. Moreover, here in Indonesia, there's a belief that forbids younger sister who's a sibling to marry before her older sister does. It's related to a myth that I'm still confused where the logic is until today. I'm in that position now so I feel highly pressured every day. However, I never stop trying to manage myself to respond those problems better.

Even if in Italy you can marry at 18 (and in particular circumstances also at 16 years old), most of italians young people won't get married before 28 (i'll say also after 30). But looking back in the 40s or 50s, not educated girls like both my grandmothers usually got married and pregnant around 18 or 20 years old. I think all depends on educations. The more you have the possibility to study and improve your life, the less you think to get married young, even if you got a "sexual incident" and you become mother/father very young. It's probably that in one or two generations also Indonesian young people will stop to get married so young...i hope so!

The guy who didn't show his face is more rational than the others,in my opinion. He states facts that are less likely to change that easily. It's also strange how in some countries like the US, the age of consent is 16 in some states, yet it's called CHILD marriage if they legalise their relationship. Otherwise, education is more effective than laws to prevent those kind of problems to happen

Imagine marrying at 16 but truly ,its best to settle down , have money etc before marriage. In general , goals can be achieved even after marriage . And you can also progress, be happy and even study after marriage so even getting married at 23 or 25 odd isnt exactly bad . Just needs more maturity to understand one another and take responsibilities. Marriage is a commitment and then raising kids is a whole another level of problems and responsibilities but it sort of just works out in the end . I would say . Age is arbitrary. The physical and mental readiness of your body and mind is not. Some people are mentally ready to make life decisions way earlier than others. Some people are never ready. Don't push your culture's morals on other cultures just because your hear stigmatized words like "pedophilia" thrown around. (Pedophilia actually refers to children who haven't hit puberty, basically 11 and under). No country has it right by selecting any specific age.

Game Channel we're not pushing our culture, it's just common sense. while I agree that some are more mature than their age it doesn't make them an adult. Marriage is not simply 'uwu we love each other and want babies everywhere' it's more than that. I don't even know what to say about your comments about pedophillia, you know just because they past their puberty doesn't mean they're an adult already right? Most of them still in developing age and still try to find their goal, dreams, and most importantly school like most student age. They probably doesn't know the sign of abuse which a 18+ would probably good at it whether it's a man or it's a woman. That's the problem, and even in some cases they know, they're too weak to fight against an adult. And more importantly basically why would anyone thinking about married to a underage people anyway lmao, are you scaring the people around your age? Cause it's kinda obvious why
