Should Drinking Alcohol Be A Crime In Indonesia? | STREET DEBATE

Can you imagine going to jail for drinking beer? In Indonesia, lawmakers are currently discussing to ban alcohol to protect the public “from the negative effects of alcohol”. If adopted, it would ban the sale, production, distribution, and even consumption of all alcoholic drinks in the country, and violators would be sentenced to fines and prison time. Since this has set off a heated nationwide debate in the media and among the public, we wanted to directly hear from Indonesians how they feel about this and whether they think drinking alcohol should be a crime. We hit the streets of Jakarta to see what they have to say.
The opinions expressed in this video are those of individual interviewees alone and do not reflect the views of ASIAN BOSS or the general Indonesian population.

The thing with prohibition is that it creates a black market for alcohol since the demand will always exist. The byproduct is that cartels will be able to control its distribution which not only puts people's lives at risk, it also benefits the criminals instead of the restaurants or liquor stores.

Nothing ever stops an Indonesian to get what they exactly want, they will always find a way to get through situations like this by the way you have suggested. But if we take a glance at the positive effects resulting from this prohibition is that spontaneous crimes done by drunk people are expected to be drastically decreasing, especially those dickheads who drive while being drunk or stoned, eventually causing accidents that may lead to several deaths, sometimes ironically he/she didn't even get severe injuries. I agree tho at one side this prohibition policy doesn't really work out, cuz the rich folks will perpetually manage to smuggle in some illegal booze, while the mending folks stick up to Tuak or a warm homemade Amer, or probably embrace themselves for an adequate amount of oplosan to heal their depression living in a capitalist country like this....XD

A very great answer from the man who said 'I agree that alcohol has to be regulated.' That is a wise answer! Living in Sweden now for 1.5 years and I could see how alcohol is regulated strictly by the government. For example: If we are too drunk, the bartender is allowed to reject your order if you want to buy more alcohol. Also, alcohol can only be purchased ina certified alcohol seller that closes on Sunday. Most importantly, you will be kicked out from a bar or club if you are too drunk. :) Great one Asian Boss!

@Baby Metal You're not the first person to say something like this and ngl, it's really stupid. Alcohol is not some "American or European cultural thing". The earliest known occurrence of alcohol was nearly 9000 years ago in China. Babylon/Mesopotamia and India both had alcohol at minimum 5000 years ago. Egypt, Greece, and natives in modern day Mexico developed alcohol not long after. It's actually believed humans may have been consuming alcohol as far back as the neolithic era. Indonesia and the rest of SE Asia have a long cultural history with alcohol, much longer than the US. Modern day Indonesia has significantly less drinkers now, but that in no way changes some of the clear negative effects Also, I have no idea what you're talking about with hot temperature considering that's where alcohol has historically been the most common lol

  • @annaairahala9462

    @annaairahala9462

    3 жыл бұрын

@Baby Metal Because alcohol and drunkenness has nothing to do with being European. What you seem to not get is that "our country is different" is an excuse that's been used for many things historically, whether it has been true or not I am not aware of a single case that the excuse has been valid. Alcohol culture has never been "European" nor has it been used for validly fighting the cold (almost the opposite in historical reality). Alcohol does make people feel warmer, but in reality, it reduces people's core temperature. That sounds like it'd be good for the heat then, but then you run into the problem of dehydration caused by alcohol in the sun among other problems. Alcohol shouldn't be used to combat any extreme temperatures and I'm wondering where you got the false notion that alcohol is more prevalent in colder cultural regions when historically and traditionally it's the opposite. I do wonder if modern day consumption is different as many equatorial countries are either catholic or islamic, in which both you have people against alcohol (Islam moreso than christianity), and since some colder countries such as Russia and Canada have reputations for alcohol I could see that being the basis of your claim. My whole point is that Indonesia has a rich history, saying "America is different because they like alcohol" not only disregards that history and tradition but doesn't acknowledge that Indonesia has a deeper relation to alcohol than America if only because of it's older age.

You also must explain the detail of this law : 1.) You still can buy alcohol in Supermarket, hotels, bar, tourism location and other LEGAL places. Of course you need to show your age in this location. 2.) There's some exemption, you still can use alcohol for religious or cultural rituals and others. This is not alcohol ban at all. I thought Centre-wings rulling party want to be close with conservative right-wing group. They’re quite shocked after see how sporadic and danger is left-wing in anti-government protest. Fun Fact : Papua, which is Christian majority province and have a christian governor already banned alcohol since 2017 or maybe 2018 :)

The problem is that Rp 1000 at that time just like Rp 100.000 or more right now. Besides, most alcohol in region are not factory made, it's homemade. Just like after September 30 1965, the government issued a regulation requiring Indonesian citizens to have a religion, they couldn't be atheist, especially socialist comunist leninist or marxist. and the court has the power to judge whether a sect can be said to be heretical or not, as it happened to Lea Eden, who merged several religions into one. What's more, I don't think it's about alcohol prohibition. It's more about taxes and fines. I think i already said it several comments, but well whatever, most alcohol in region are not factory made, it's homemade. As you know, homemade alcohol does not generate taxes. If they pay their tax, it would be different story. Another one about being drunk on public in east indies era was fined with 1000 gulden, when Indonesia became independent it's translated into Rp 1000. as someone who's fully Indonesian, this ban is utterly stupid. There's a reason why they only allow people whos like 18-21+ people to drink alcohol, it's cuz they're mature enough to know the side effect and can control themselves, people who go against the rules are obviously the minorities. They ban alcohol cuz of the reason "it's bad for the people's health", however they didn't ban cigerattes which has a more wprse side effects than alcohol (and also more addictive). Indonesia is a country filled with so many religion and culture, there might be some religion/culture that doesn't allow their followers/people to drink alcoholic drinks, however it's so stupid to just ban it. Did they not think of the pther people who are allowed to drink those alcoholic drinks that aren't restricted with their religion or culture? Did they not think of the tourist economy? Did they not care of their people's businesses that got their profit from alcoholic drinks? Instead of just banning shits educate the people FFS

We won't ever let the country change the ideology and let backward religious laws control us. As for these alcohol bans, it won't happen. This is a joke. Most people believe it won't happens, it's too dumb to legalize it. I think this is just some political agenda and some politician are just trying to fight to get more money from the alcohol oligarchs. Believe it or not because of these issues, most alcohols in the market especially imported ones are cheaper now.. bussiness people are emptying their warehouse. "Secular" majority Muslim countries do not exist. They will always force everyone else to follow their religious laws, sooner or later. Pity the millions of non-Muslim minorities in Indonesia. Especially in eastern Indonesia and West Papua. This is the reason why Timor-Leste fought for independence. In non-Muslim majority countries, people are bending over backwards to accommodate Muslim immigrants and travelers, putting prayer rooms in transportation hubs, labeling food as halal or not, allowing people to wear hijabs, allowing sharia to function in civil courts, and so on. In Indonesia, it's not traditional for most people to drink beer or any other alcoholic beverages. Alcohol itself is already an expensive item in Indonesia and most people is already a teetotaler because of the religion. So, the effect is much less problematic than the prohibitionist America. However, I don't know how less problematic it actually is, probably not by much. And this doesn't recognize some Indonesia ethnicity minorities where alcoholic drinking is more traditional

Alcohol addictions and other types of substance abuse are issues around basic human needs. Peace and conflict studies scholars such as Burton and Galtung and many social identity theorists believe that threats to fundamental human needs (i.e. identity, recognition, security, welfare, freedom, personal development, etc.) can create conflicts. From this perspective, substance abuse is not a root cause of social issues but rather symptoms of social injustice and inequality.

Smoking kills over 400 000 Indonesians annually. For the officials to try to claim public health as a reason for the ban is ridiculous.

if gov banned alcohol, it wouldn't disappear from indonesia. It just moves to blackmarket commodity without proper regulation which is I think its more dangerous (there's no safety control, limitation, etc)

I think most will definitely agree to this, cause 87% of indonesians are muslim and alcohol is bad as stated in their religion. But then again I would still disagree even though I don't drink alcohol because as the batak guy and old guy said in the video, it's not the alcohol's fault, it's the people who misuse it. It's so sad that Indonesia was never a secular nation in practice...

@@teofilusevanmenosa3689 I disagree cause many Muslims in Indonesia do consume small amounts of alcohol especially men. Even on top of that most people are mild Muslims and would rather not drink themselves and don't see the point of banning it. I'm European and my other side of my family is Indonesian and honestly they're never happy when their government tries to implement "sharia laws", especially if they know it will impact non Muslim people in their country.

To give a little context, i presumed the people who propose this bill are probably from the older generation. I've heard stories from my mom about drinking culture where she grew up. The alcohol that they're familiar with are not some cute flavored vodka or hand crafted beers. The traditional indonesian alcohol drinks are usually homemade high proof stuffs, nobody knows what's inside and nobody questions whether it's safe to consume. People usually drink during game nights where they gambled and all that jazz. It's not uncommon to see someone became violent under the influence after losing some cash. I think maybe that's where they started to associate alcohol with crime. The drinking culture now is quite different. People drink in bars, restaurants, etc. They don't make their own questionable beverage, they use ready-made products which arguably are less risky since they at least have passed some health controls. It might seem like we have a lot of alcohol related crimes, but we have to take into account that more people are consuming alcohol. It's not just for gambling old men or experimental teenagers anymore. Oh and it's never reserved for non muslims only. It might be swept under the rug after your grandparents did the hajj pilgrimage but indonesians have been drinking alcohol regardless of their religion

We need strict regulation not prohibition, banning alcohol will only make the black market run rampant, also people are already producing bootleg alcohol (which is dangerous) here in indonesia and this is going to get worse if the demand of alcohol rise because of the prohibition Make strict rules like you need and id (ktp) to buy alchohol so underaged people can not buy, regulate the percentage of alcohol that is allowed for sale so people do not get drunk carelessly
