Indonesian Protests on the New Controversial Criminal Code | ASIAN BOSS

These days the world seems to be erupting in protests over controversial laws. And Jakarta, Indonesia, is ground zero for the latest mass demonstration. Thousands of Indonesian students in Jakarta have surrounded the parliament building in protest of a controversial criminal code that would outlaw extramarital affairs, weaken the country’s anti-corruption body, and many other things. Our Asian Boss team in Indonesia hit the streets of Jakarta to speak directly with the protestors to understand why they are protesting and to find out how ordinary Jakartans feel about them.
The opinions expressed in this video are those of individual interviewees alone and do not reflect the views of ASIAN BOSS or the general Indonesian population.

    Even if you are sex addicted, you have the right to it and the government shouldn't meddle in the private life of people if they don't hurt anyone. But i get it, they should also focus on other points of your protests. You are doing good, continue fighting and don't let the unreasonable laws win!

    This protest indeed became one of the largest protests in Indonesia that held by the students after 1998. There were thousands of students from various cities went to the road and did the demonstration. Actually the demonstration was not only about extramarital sex ban but there were also more matters that need to be brought to the light. The students have seven demands in total encompassing several issues : - Reject Criminal Code bill, mineral mining bill, land bill, correctional procedures bill and labor bill; revoke KPK Law and Natural Resources Law; pass sexual violence bill and domestic workers bill. - Remove problematic KPK leaders picked by House of Representatives. - Ban Indonesian Military (TNI) and National Police personnel from holding civilian offices. - End militarism in Papua and other regions and immediately free Papuan political prisoners. - End prosecution of activists. - End burning of forests in Kalimantan and Sumatra and punish corporations responsible for fires and revoke their permits. - Resolve human rights violations and put human rights violators on trial, including those at the highest levels of government; immediately restore rights of victims.

    As an indonesian, this title should be changed imo to something like "Indonesian protests regarding the ban of freedom of speech" or "Indonesian protests regarding the new discrimitative bill". Most of us aren't apposed to premaritial sex but we also dont support it. It's kinda a weird situation because we have 6 official registered religions here and we respect eachother's religion. Many people are protesting because of the new rule that suspress freedom of speech and discriminate women's rights. Also, I've been comenting for the past 2 months of so, i'd like to see a vid regarding the situtation with chinese-indonesians in Indonesia. We want our voices to be heard too. Anyway, awesome interview, can't wait for the next one. Love from Indo ✌🇮🇩 Edit: we basicly think premaritial sex stuff is just ur buisiness w/ God and shouldn't be resolved by the government but by your own relation to God

    Please rephrase the title. This is SO wrong in any way. The protest is far beyond this. And to top it all, there has always been laws about extramarital sex in Indonesia before this. We have cultural/norms and social punishment when it comes to extramarital sex. Why do people act like this ‘extramarital laws’ is a new thing? It’s been there since the day 1.

  • @jessboo173
    @jessboo1734 жыл бұрын

    A lot of comments say the title is misleading but i haven't find one that explains what tbe protest was really about. So here's what i've found. The students not only protesting against *one* bill of law, especially not only about extramarrital sex, they have 7 demands: 1. Reject the proposed criminal code bill, mineral mining bill, land bill, correctional procedures bill and labor bill. Urge to revoke Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) bill and natural resource bill. Urge to pass sexual violence bill and domestic worker bill 2. Remove problematic leaders of the Corruption Eradication Commission who are picked by house of representatives 3. Ban police and military force from holding civilian office 4. Stop militarism in Papua, release the political prisoners 5. Stop criminalization against activists 6. End forest fire in Sumatera and Kalimantan. Penalize the companies responsible for the fire and remove their business permit 7. Resolve human rights violation, convict the perpetrators, and immediately restore the victims' rights (Largely taken from TheJakartaPost) Please bear in mind that this is not only about the bill of law. This is not the first time a questionable bill is proposed, Indonesian students know how to handle it well by proposing judicial reviews. But there had been a lot of incidents which led up to the protest such as neglected forest fire, racism and oppressive treatment against Papuans, etc.

  • @jessboo173

    All the fuss about premarrital sex and banning women from wandering alone at night, i assume is taken from an infographic published to give an idea about what would be considered breaking the law if the new criminal code is passed. But i must say it is highly exaggerated and could be misleading. I personally never see the bill mention about *women in particular* walking at night is prohibited. There is also controversy about marrital rape. Some people don't understand the idea of rape within marriage, they assume women (or men) must submit (sexually) to their spouse after marriage. There are also some people who just haven't understand the difference between rape and consensual sex.

Why do foreign media always corner only about sex only. try you more thoroughly. The student demonstration promotes various things. Including the revision of the anti-corruption law which turns out to actually weaken the eradication of corruption, The draft law on the Elimination of Sexual Violence which turns out to be contrary to religious principles, Intentional forest fires in which the alleged involvement of conglomerates is allegedly involved, The correctional law plan its contents convicted of corruption may leave from prison. The draft criminal law, which includes articles on humiliating the president that curb freedom of opinion, and other articles that are considered to undermine the interests of the people. Please Asian Boss, do reaserch again.

    you're right actually, Asian Boss ALWAYS portrays Asian countries such as Philippines, Indonesia, India, Vietnam, China, even Japan in a bad way. I work in Journalism field since 2006 and i can tell you that Asian Boss is really biased and have their own agenda to discredit those countries i mentioned. I can even dare to say Asian Boss is tool for propaganda. Embarrassing!

    The title is horribly misleading, I think maybe it is to attract attention. I read the title & saw the thumbnail, I'm like "Are people protesting for banning extramarital affairs? Where are their interests at?" I watched the content, its more than what meets the eye. Although I don't know what the full picture is but its good (in a way) that people are standing against detrimental laws as stated in the video.

    It would be a horrid repressive law if it passes. I am glad people around the world are starting to stand up to these authoritarians be it Trump, Xi, Putin or Widodo. Even moral considerations aside, such a law would obliterate the Indonesia tourism industry and perhaps provoke economic sanctions from freedom-loving countries around the world.

    Those new laws are indeed unacceptable and violate human rights. I always had the impression Indonesia is on the way towards a progessive society ,- obviousely in resentment with the corrupt conservatives in the parlament. I wish the protesters success and great support by people!
