Why Are People Getting Caned In Indonesia? | ASIAN BOSS

Indonesia is the world's biggest Muslim-majority country and has been in the international spotlight recently for publicly caning people for their “crimes” under what’s known as “sharia law.” Sharia law is only implemented in Aceh province, and follows Islamic traditions and condemns certain behavior such as drinking alcohol, extramarital affairs and having gay sex. But how do ordinary Indonesians feel about this law? We hit the streets of Jakarta to find out.
The opinions expressed in this video are those of individual interviewees alone and do not reflect the views of ASIAN BOSS or the general Indonesian population.
Special thanks to our Asian Boss team in Jakarta, Indonesia.

Why? Not all things that considered normal, not backward i.e. 'up to date' are correct. What if canning does have has strong reasoning base? If the use of canning does have a positive effect and better compared to other method, why should we forbid it? The law exist to foremost prevent unlawful behaviour and canning does just that. They’re not frightened or afraid that they’ll be caned. Sharia law is only implemented in Aceh, and these interviews are conducted in Jakarta (presumably because journalists are banned from aceh) so there are no direct ramifications to speaking negatively about it. If they’re afraid of anything it’d be the celestial, religious consequence of criticising Allah. Saudi influences on the mosques and Muslim education is disappointingly, ruining the minds of young people. That’s why more of the younger participants seemed more closed minded than the older participants. Lady in the peach hijab said not to judge a book by its cover yet agrees that cutting off someone’s hand if they steal, or public caning for acts like gay sex and extramarital affairs is the right way to do things. There certainly is irony in that. Edit for a correction: I apologise for misspeaking it was always taught to me as a child in Indonesia by my mother as a hand that would be cut off for stealing. If it is just a finger then I stand corrected. Perhaps it was just an exaggeration to scare me further. Nevertheless I retain that maiming someone for a petty crime like theft is a grossly exaggerated punishment.

I'm indonesian and as someone that's not very religious (even tho i still do the basic prayers everyday) i wouldn't want to go to places that have a very strong religious influence in their area like aceh. There's other places like bali, lombok, papua, and others that're more interesting and diverse. Earlier this year i went to bali and they have the most chill and open minded people there. Even though i'm muslim and the majority people in bali are not, they still give us direction when we asked where's the mosque is placed. I definately think religion should be a personal matter because we saw multiple times when people start to mixed it with politics or laws it became a mess and only divide people which can make them resent each other. Even though majority are muslim there's still people with other religion that live here and i wish islam as a majority didn't act like the boss. I really wish sharia law stays only in aceh and never penetrate to bigger and more famous city such as jakarta because if it does, we're in a lot of trouble.

We will never sadly get any sort of news about that because most of them are still in the closet. Something being in Judaism or Christianity does not make it okay. They're both shitty old religions as well used to control people. Please use better reasoning. The Quran and the thousands of hadiths that exist out there contradict themselves sometimes. In one verse or hadith it could say that you can do whatever you want unless you harm someone and in others it would be the absolute opposite. If you want to I wouldn't mind a debate around Islam as long as it stays civil. Goes for both you and me.

Islam feels so anti-choice to me. I live in Aceh. My parents are muslims, so even before I knew how to think for myself, they indoctrinated me into the religion. Stuff like, "You'll go to hell if you don't listen to me (parents.)" But now that I'm an adult and can decide for myself, I no longer am trapped in the Islamic bubble of subconscious fear. Though I'm considered an apostate, I've never really chosen the religion out of my own accord. My family doesn't know yet. I don't make it public since it might threaten my life. Hopefully, I can leave this stifling city in the near future and finally live in peace. Thanks to AsianBoss for doing this interview. Law is made for good, I am Muslim and I come and live in Aceh, then am I afraid of caning or is sharia law terrible? The answer is not at all. The punishment applies to those who do wrong and I feel that sharia law has a deterrent effect on the perpetrators of crime. And I think that whatever form of law (which is made for good) if it is implemented will certainly create a peaceful environment. And I hope the media do not exaggerate more in telling something without being so understanding about the issue, I keep thinking why outsiders are so scared of sharia punishment, Even though we who are within the scope of the law feel safe and peaceful, I hope we can respect each other, the law is there to govern us in the good way, just follow our each other rules whatevr form it is. Sharia law just can be implemented according to several factors. For example if someone steal something they can only be punnished based on some condition one of them is they steal not because they hungry. If the suspect steal because of poverty and the amount no more than 1/4 dinar ( 1 dinar around 2.500.000 IDR) the suspect should not be punnished. It's goverment role to protect the suspect and give them appropiate jobs. Fyi, each province in Indonesia they have own otonomy which means the Indonesia goverment give the authority to province to manage their land and system. utsman zulhakim I think one of the reasons as to why the comment section show such different opinions is because it’s a different demographic? They mainly filmed around the streets and outdoors while the Indonesians who are commenting are doing so in English, onto a channel that’s quite international so a lot of them probably had the kind of education that allowed for open minded thinking? I’ve said it before but I really wished the team would’ve interviewed people in areas such as a mall or educational institution to get a range of responses. And yeah you’re super right about everything Aceh related, I actually didn’t know they contributed such a large amount in revenue that’s super interesting.

@@kellenbudilay8305 imho even if they interviewed more of the "open minded" people, im.pretty sure the response will be kind of a diplomatic one, they wont say outright they refuse sharia law openly. And honestly jakarta is quite diverse enough, because you can watch a mosque full of devout muslims doing prayer while having a pork bbq with a prostitute in a night market lol. Yeah aceh is very important to the indonesian government both geographically and strategically. But right now, its kinda like a hate love relationship between aceh, indonesian government, and other indonesian people outside of aceh.

Even a diplomatic response can have overtones of a more logical reasoning even if they won’t explicitly say that they disagree. Pretty happy to see how a lot of people are vocalizing their opinions in the comment section, though! Definitely have to look into the Aceh thing more thoroughly I feel so misinformed. Thanks mate!

It doesn't matter if there discusses Indonesian Muslims, but if all the coverage about Islam only I feel this will be different for Indonesia as a whole, because Indonesia is not an Islamic country. Shariah law rulling on certain regions will make it's way into history books, not the two other examples. 2. So Asian Boss always interviews proper individuals, in the correct regions, even people who escaped from North Korean (while we all know how North Korea reacts to this...), but you accuse them on not interviewing the right persons in this video. Hmmm... may it have something to do about how Islam through Shariah law treats people criticising Islam ? Not the best environment for unbiased answers. 3. The intro provided enough information. And everyone knows what's Shariah law. Come on. 4. Thanks for bringing in a concept openly weaponized by islamic schoolars when they so gently explain how they wish Islam will conquer some countries.

As a non-muslim Indonesian conflicts regarding majorities-minorities in the past are common at this point. I'm not saying all people, but discrimination between religion and races exists literally everywhere (forming groups in public schools, for example). It's hard to unite a whole 240 mil people when the majority only cares about their own group's interests over everyone's.

Yes, but remember one man (who was wearing the black T-Shirt said that women should not be treated that way, because human beings should not be treated inhumanely = 1:20 ). I was wondering if they cane the woman in the situation, aren't they caning the man involved in the situation as well? or is just women caught in the adulterous relationship that is being caned? since that is the case, I will never respect a law that has no respect for human dignity and is so gender biased

The problem is that even non-Muslims are punished according to Shariah law. An elderly Christian woman is publicly caned for selling alcohol. 2 Buddhist men are also publicly caned for gambling. It is ok to use Sharia law if the offenders are Muslims. It is unfair to punish non-Muslims using Islamic Sharia law.
