How Dangerous Is Indonesia For Women? [Street Interview] | ASIAN BOSS

A recent study has found that Indonesia is the second-most dangerous country for women in the Asia Pacific region. A nationwide survey commissioned by the Women’s Empowerment and Child Protection Ministry found that one in three women in Indonesia suffered violence in their lifetime. But is this true for the average Indonesian women? We hit the streets of Jakarta to find out.
The opinions expressed in this video are those of individual interviewees alone and do not reflect the views of ASIAN BOSS or the general Indonesian population.

I remember when I visited Indonesia with my family the first time. My mom is from Indonesia and I remember how we were walking down a street. An old guy in a car stopped next to us and said that I‘m pretty and asked my mom if he could marry me. Since I can’t understand Bahasa I asked my mom what he said. When she translated me what he said, I felt so uncomfortable. I was 10 years old at this time. Now I‘m 29 years old and even now I would never go out alone in Indonesia. I always have my family with me.

Whoever you are, if you take care of yourself, it'll be safer for you. My friends and I take care of ourselves (we avoid dangerous and risky places, we don't use public transportations alone/with someone we don't really trust, we don't wear revealing outfits unless the event and place is suitable for it, we ask our parents/family to pick us up/accompany us, etc), it is pretty safe. If you don't take care of yourself and your belongings, it won't be as safe, no matter your gender (and it doesn't always have to be sexual related crimes). It's just common sense : the more you take care of yourself (by being careful, etc), the safer it'll be for you (doesn't eliminate danger tho).

So tell me what the guy in the video should have said then? Are you positive you wouldn't say something to protect yourself either? Imagine you actually had a reputation, a family and a job/career worth protecting? And also, what evidence would you bring to the table had it been you in the video that is more compelling? Something you can't refute, like statistics. Please reconsider, public denigration is not as light as you think. He had a pause before answering that, pretty sure he was thinking of something.

"if she can look out for herself" Boi, everyone has to try to look out for everybody. As a teenage girl, i don't like the situation on this topic in Indonesia. Indonesia is a country of victim blaming. They either say "your dress is too short" "you're the one who's provoking him" "maybe because of how much skin you show". In Indonesia people get mocked for being sexually assaulted, but they rarely mocked the predators. Indonesia's legislative government aka DPR said that the law we are fighting for (the rupks / the law made to make it easier to punish the perpetrators) are "liberal" "feminist" and "encouraging prostitution" when what the people actually wanted is to make the victims safer, make it easier to punish the perpetrators, and to bring justice to the victims. Me as an Indonesian, I truly am disappointed at how the government failed to protect the most vulnerable ones, women and children. I certaintly hope that in the near future, there will be a law set in place to make sexual assault or any other assault easier to punish.

Life is unpredictable and fragile...it's ok to worry cuz as humans we don't live in a perfect, secured society. Have u thought about whether u go 2 heaven or hell after this life? Cuz life is short & fragile. Look at how many peeps die each day...but there's hope... Fortunately there's a way to not suffer, not be in danger, not be poor, not get hurt, not have to work in vain, not have to feel any kind of negative vibe, and not to get tired anymore. Imagine you will be invincible, immortal, and holy with a new, upgraded body. Imagine everyone around you will be the same as you. Imagine everyone will respect each other. Isn't that a delightful thought? It's true you or anyone can have such a perfect, eternal life. All you got to do is to accept Jesus Christ 🙏 as your Savior! Once you do, He will let you into heaven during your day when you finally see Him!

I even remember I actually had a Filipino boyfriend in the ship and when everybody knew I was dating him they stopped talking to me and then he had to disembark and it start all over again! I eventually disembark because the ship life its horrible and because of too many looks that was making my heart like a rock and I didnt want to be ugly and full of range inside me. All I could think all day at work was “how do I respond all the comments” and it consumed in so many ways that I stopped to be nice with everybody and it break my heart I felt very angry all the time and like I had to be stupid with every Indonesian otherwise they would make the harassment (until today I cant admit its harassment even tho I know it is) The worst experience in my life!

I used to date an Indo guy and the more I found out about what he believed the more turned off I was. Ultimately he ended up cheating on me so things ended. But he believed that women were only leaders when it came to the household, that it was the women's responsibility to be modest and cover up, and that men's brains were "more perfect" than women's. The worst was that he believed it's okay for men to marry girls as long as they've reached menstrual age. When I questioned him further about this he said he wouldn't personally do it since he was attracted to older women, but that it was acceptable there. He even once joked about rape and I got really mad, which shocked him. To him it was normal to joke about such things. He never made that kind of joke again, and he actually admitted that he found me intelligent so my brain couldn't be less perfect, but it's just the way he was brought up. He had all these backwards beliefs, but when I actually drilled him he couldn't justify those beliefs. He said I made him feel stupid cause he was unable to answer me. I just feel sad that the girls and boys in that society are being raised to think a certain way. It's so backwards.

There's a way to not suffer, not be in danger, not be poor, not get hurt, not have to work in vain, not have to feel any kind of negative vibe, & not to be disrespected anymore by anyone. Imagine you will be invincible, immortal, and holy with a new, upgraded body. Imagine everyone around you will be the same as you without ranking/hierarchy. Isn't that a delightful thought? It's true you or anyone can have eternal life. All you got to do is to accept Jesus Christ 🙏 as your Savior! Once you do, He will let you into heaven during your day when you finally see Him! ❤❤❤

Recently I saw a video which said that Asian Boss was having a fund raising campaign. Then I looked at the type of videos, and I thought Asian Boss seem to be selective in topics on some countries such as Indonesia. The same is not true for e.g. Korea. I have been to 25 countries including Indonesia and have lived in Korea for 4 years. Korea is the only place I saw men beating women in public, particularly when they are drunk. Korean dramas promote alcohol. Whenever they have something to worry, or stress, alcohol is the solution as it's shown. When they are happy, alcohol is the way to celebrate. Also when they do videos on Indonesia, I have noticed they are also selective in choosing which answer belong to whom. In the video about Indonesia's control on alcohol, they used a response from a Muslim woman wearing a face veil as a response to disagree Alcohol should be allowed (what are they trying to show?). I appeared myself in Korean KBS, and I know what they did to me. They were selective in clips of what they wanted to show, and what they wanted to omit. For me I felt they used me for their propaganda. I simply have no idea on that when they were shooting. I didn't want to comment 3 days ago when I noticed the bias of Asianboss 3 days ago, but today when I saw this by chance, I decided to put out my opinion. They should instead ask Korean women how dangerous they feel by harassment of men in Korea. Just ask exactly the same questions in Korea. Gordon Ramsay's kitchen nightmare series expose the truth that even in the developed countries these things happen, sometimes may be worse.

This is harsh. I'm an Indonesian, and as a student, talking about or being taught about sex is something taboo. Also, students aren't taught to self-control here. I mean, being attracted sexually is TOTALLY FINE. But those people tend to express it instead of keeping it for themself, I think that's the problem: SELF-CONTROL. I think topics about sex needs to be taught since ones' still young, instead of keeping them out of sex topics. Because it is impossible. One day, they will exposed to sexual content either through people around them, internet, etc etc. Teen needs to be ready for that thing once it hit them.

@@personspec8881 That's a good point. However, what I put emphasize on was to make the world a safer place instead of keeping those dangers off of us. Bcs sometimes what happens is we have to go to the dangerous outside world that you already mentioned, without the luxury of having some safety precautions, such as someone to accompany us, or even go out in groups, etc etc. And I think the urgency to make the world a safer place is higher than to promote "make sure you have someone with you" because it needs no saying that most of us realize that this is a dangerous world that we're living in. But still, promoting that kind of stuff is important to remind people, especially minors because they tend to underestimate how dangerous it can be to go out alone.

The right answer is to give both sides some education about respecting both genders and themselves. So they have a higher self-esteem to not do stupid thing like harassing other or bait opposite gender(same sex) to sexually harass them. You can't always blame lust for what's happened and you can't also always consider that lust is something normal that u can blame the victim for. Both sides needs to protect themselves from any type of harm. Just like what islam teach us. It’s sad that the women have a mindset of “We should be prepared” and “We should be careful” and “We can’t do certain things,” which makes it seem like they’re the ones at fault. They all seem to be taught that it’s their problem for being harassed, not the men’s fault for actually doing so. Indonesia needs to get better at telling men how to act and have more law enforcement on wrongdoings such as sexual harassment and misconduct.

For me, Indonesia is not too bad for women ... because I live in an area that is far from violence by women. surveys and data from a nominal figure do not make the country uninhabitable. (Usually when there is a beating of a woman, the people around will help both men and women.)

In my opinion even the government is toxic, tbh Indonesia is a quite safe place for women, we can access education and work anything we like, altought in some cases you can find a very toxic and negative environtment. just some uneducational people do cat calling or even sexual harrasment but what i can see from it, is because mostly they didn't get anough education. Although as a muslim country, many guys who prcatise their religion and most important open minded will respect women.

I said it's because once I start looking feminine, random guys in the street will catcall me. He responded with how I should feel flattered instead. I have never felt so disgusted ever in my life... This happened not long after me getting groped by three middle school age boys on a motorcycle while I was walking home with groceries on the street I always pass through. Recently, a new building is being built near my dorm. 4 stories high, about 4 houses away. Naturally there's the labor guys working there. “If she can look out for herself” is so frustrating. It’s always the women who worry about how short our skirts are, if anyone is following behind us, if our t shirts are too deep, if our nipples are showing through, etc... meanwhile, men who are blindly ignoring these things walk around at night not having to worry about being groped, raped, or sexually harassed. Yes men are also vulnerable to these issues but not as women are. Seeing men in these videos and noticing how men are the ones who are surprised that Indonesia is #2 dangerous country for women and disagreeing or saying that is safe is just maddening. I wonder if they know what that their moms, sisters, and wives/gfs think

i get sexual harassment a lot, recently some random people have been adding me from my whatsapp, and they be like 'hey hello, can i be friends with you?' if i answer no , they be like 'such a rude woman, you think you are pretty? you are such a sl*t' etc, but they proceed to bug me, if i just ignore them , they're still bugging me , like spamming or worst taking pic of their D. and real life is also no better, men's catcalling, or 'accidentally' touch me y'know when boy's pushing their friends so they can fall on me, if you are thinking maybe it's my appearance, no , i'm kind of person who doesn't like revealing clothes, so i usually wear oversized clothes to hide my body shape, there is once i've an arguments with one of those rude guy, and their reason is 'your fault for having a big bo*bs and a**' i was like??? is it my fault that i have lump of fat on my chest? that can't be removed like some belly fats? let me tell you 'most' men in Indonesia is no men.

"Wear proper clothes!" "It's your fault, your skin can be seen so of course they will harass you" "Come on, why bother, it's just because you're beautiful, they just like you!" Whether you're a muslim or not, live in a big city or not, wear hijab or not, sexual harassment is real here. I don't realize it before, but then i remember too scared to go out alone at 7pm. That's how dangerous it feels. Also, catcalling is something that society force us to take as a normal thing while it really bother. I don't want to talk bad about my country but religion doesnt have much to do with this at all. Even in place that i thought as the safest place because it's a religion-base school also have so many sexual harassment cases. I hate that women always seen as a "candy" and tendency in society that it's always women's fault. If you're a man, then you have to educate yourself to respect women more. Edit: since Indonesia is such a big country, so it maybe different for another region

@Papyrus Okagbue Papyrus Okagbue i never think that way. And i guess i have around 60 peole who agree with my statement. "Wear hijab or not..", it means no matter women wear hijab or not, they still experienced sexual harassment. How the hell i will end up thinking that force all of women even non muslim to wear hijab too is a solution? I don't understand why would you think that i think that way Instead, in the last paragraph I said men have to educate them selves more

As an Indonesian woman living in Jakarta, I would like to share my real-life experience on this Compared to other countries that have bad labels sticks to them (I often have to travel for work to Malaysia, and my colleague always warn me about rape/abduction even though we stayed in KL. Also in Tokyo where groping is a "daily" occurence), I consider Jakarta mainly on the safe side. Due to my job, I mostly have to do overtime and go back home past 11 PM by Grab/taxi, so far nothing happened. Even when going out for drinks and leaving at 2 AM, I haven't got any issue so far. Of course, always being on alert is a given And even when you feel malicious atmosphere when walking alone at night, somehow I feel safer here in Jakarta because the people here would respond when you scream. Even when someone did something inappropriate in the public (groping, showing their private part etc), you can depend that someone can stand up for you when you ask for help. Yet when talking about non-physical harassment like catcalling or when men staring at you openly, indeed I find it a daily episode. However, you can openly bark at the people who did this to you (very rare they willl get back to you, but I think I'm not in the wrong so I stand my ground. Most people will support you as well if the catcaller make a ruckus). In a nutshell, be a strong women in Jakarta. Keep yourself alert at every time.

The problem is Indonesia is a very vast country with numerous different cultures. One can feel a cultural shock just by visiting another island. What you may encounter in Jakarta can be radically different to what you may encounter in, say, Solo, a city which is still in the same island. You can imagine how different things in places like Jayapura, Aceh, Lombok, Tarakan, etc. I mean the interviewer should interview women in other parts of Indonesia too, to get the bigger picture, because the title is "How dangerous is *Indonesia* for women".

@@justafeeling3652 I think that's just a matter of perspective. A girl/woman should maintain her reputation in society, especially in the neighborhood for the sake of family dignity. But I'm speaking for myself, I often spending nights far from home for some organisation activities, and that's fine, bcs my parents know what I'm doing and the guys I'm spending time with is protecting me.

@KTL When the last time you see Someone putting their wallet in front of open door? When the last time someone has their house door open 24/7 especially with a house so luxury without security & hope no uninvited guess coming inside? When the last time you see someone wear a lot jewelry in her body & go anywhere? Is it really save driving car while drunk & expect not to crash? If you can't answer my question about your lying & delusional how I could respect you? Especially your conclusion putting all man in one basket. Despite the fact most man learn to dating or married just to have contact with woman? If this is your idea of putting man into some kind of criminal, I don't think your idea of rape, assault of harassment could be any different rather than another projection. Your willingness putting all man, despite the fact I stated above & cops, President, farmer, etc. They work so hard to make your life comfortable in the first place. I don't think you have any gratitude, you ungrateful prick.
