300 is how one the cheapest social housing costs in my country. most spaces that you rent cost between 400 to 670 in social sector and normal sector between 700 to 2000 or more euros. which is even higher in USD. Buying a home is mostly done I think but is very expensive right now. Between 300000 and 1000000. Most normal houses cost around 300000 and 500000 I think. I do think it depends how much money you earn each month. Some countries get paid more then others.

It's kinda just sympathy vs empathy, I originally said selfless because being empathetic is a quality of selflessness. Sympathy is showing compassion when something bad has happened, I guess its not wrong but empathy is more correct in my opinion.

I soooo admire this guy. He is sensible, hard working, humble, clever. He has a lot of respect for the efforts made by his parents to support him in university and he does his best to help them. His parents must be really proud of such a mature and committed son. It looks like they raised him the best way. I don't know if this is typical in Korean culture, but he is completely different from the millions of pampered, rotten spoiled Italian "students" that exploit their parents to have luxury clothing, cars, holidays and they don't even clean after themselves (mummy does all the cleaning and cooking for them!) let alone study hard!!! Many Italian families should take lessons from this guy!! I wish him all the best for his future job and personal life. You go guy!!

I am an American living in Southern California. I've known some Korean friends here and I've been impressed by the respect that is culturally ingrained in Korean youth for their elders. This is even shown in Korean language because young people.use different words towards elders in ordinary conversation to show respect. Very different from attitudes of American youth towards elders!

She got emotional seeing the size of her sister's room without knowing the situation of how she is struggling to live in that place and how can she manage to study there despite of her environment. It was an eye opener for everyone especially for those students who are working hard and doing their best to achieve their dreams.

This is living smart. My friends did only bed spaces, meaning they shared the room and only had the bed as their space. Now they are Doctors and other professionals😊

I am Korean and lived in a Goshiwon too. When I moved from my hometown to Seoul for a job after finishing my study, there was no money and no option but Goshiwon. I lived for almost one year before leaving the country. Yeah, I am the one of the "I can not deal with this shXX" minded Korean persons. Anyway, it's not a place I think it should be available legally in Korea but the government can not do much. In fact, many people will not find a place to live at the cheap price in Seoul. Where do they go? street or park? This is one of stories Koreans don't want to share but this student seems brave enough to talk about it in open mind. in any countries, there are good and bad things together and this is one negative thing when living in the country.

@@klefleee well it depends on how long you stay and how cheap/expensive you live there. I saved up around €8.000 for a period of 5 and a half month. I also traveled to Jakarta, Bali, Busan & Japan with that budget. Save expenses by going out to eat with friends (cooking is expensive if it's not noodles). Good luck! EDIT: I worked part time as a translator aswell but that was once a month for 50K KRW

Everyone goes through hardship in life. When I got disowned by my family at 18, I found myself a box room he charged me £50pm. I use to wake up ready for work at 4am to clean a university. I had a dream to complete my studies. I have to drop out as I couldn’t travel to college 2.5hrs every day! I never had enough money for food. I only worked 16hrs a week. I was broke weeks on end with no saving no money, I was starving drinking water and couldn’t sleep bcoz of hunger, my shoe broke, I couldn’t buy washing clothes detergent😢 Now I’m married for 8yrs, have a supporting husband and a 1 year old son. I’ve completed my bachelors degree and finish my Msc. I’m living in a 3 bedroom flat. I have savings, I have a car also, travelled to a few places around the world. Life does get better, but you have to struggle and work hard for a better future, no one will spoon feed you! ❤️

I would love to find a safe clean space like this in the States. If I were to find a room where I live for $300 it'd be in the worst part of town with peeling wallpaper, broken windows, in someone's house in the basement or something. You're more likely to spend $500 a month though.

When I saw the room, I thought it costs $50, but $300...Korea is expensive

You don't know what a gosiwon life is really like unless you've actually lived in one. I'm Korean myself, born and raised in Seoul, and when I was a young boy, my family had a hard time financially and so I ended up in one of these gosiwons. Needless to say, it was like hell, suffocating and all. No windows, hardly any ventilation, no soundproofing whatsoever. It looks like it's private but not really. The worst part of it is the lack of space. We humans are animals after all and we need SPACE. You don't get that in gosiwon and you don't realize that until you actually have the experience of it. It feels like you're stuck in one of those "cubes" in the movie "Cube", but much smaller. Or you could compare it to a solitary confinement cell in prison. It's THAT BAD. Those who choose to stay there choose to stay there not because they want to but because they have no other choice. They all want to get out of there as soon as possible. If you really want to know what I'm talking about, go find one in Seoul and try it out for yourself.

Honestly it's mostly about managing your expectations. If you go in there expecting the worse then it can only go uphill from there. Judging by how positive and humble he is, I believe he managed those expectations extremely well. You can't expect a gosiwon to be a cosy home. It should be meant solely for you to sleep and barely enough to fulfill your most basic needs.

These places should be banned! A total exploitation of real estate sharks. The south Korean govt can create affordable housing with much better architecture for low income ppl but instead continue to allow developers to build ugly tower blocks for massive profit. It's incredible how corrupt the South Korean govt is by allowing this trend to continue.

Couldn't you just leave the residence for leisure? You don't even have to buy anything, just take a walk around the park and people watch or something. Literally, you are only stuck because you choose to be. It's not like gosiwon is a prison. At the end of the day, you get what you pay for. In this case, a place to sleep at night.

Kevin Y you're not getting the point. These places are not livable. The govt allows developers to build these kinds of buildings for massive profit.

I stayed in one in Itaewon in 2011 for a month just for the experience and to save money while travelling around. Great experience but only when you're young. The older guys who live there are in some really bad and sad states.

Yes, I agree with you. Most of the older generation in Korea are far-right and territorial. They are the people who have made rapid economic growth, but they do not know how to love anything other than economic activity. This is very unfortunate. Not all of them, but they They are victims of their poor days, and are not kind to strangers.

Aw bless him. He’s so humble and caring, it’s rare in young ones his age. He’s realistic about what he can and can’t have at the moment and makes the best of the situation with a smile and head held high. I wish I could help you young man. Stay strong and press on, I’m sure you’ll do very well and things will get better for you and your parents ☺️.

He will be success with that right mentality, btw I actually expecting a dirty toilets and kitchen since they’re communal but, turns out the rice is always prepared and the kimchi too, separated level according to gender, clean hallways.. it’s pretty nice

I lived in a goshiwon during my year abroad - I paid about 450usd and for that I did actually have a private wetroom. It's really not so bad in goshiwon when you're a student. They're small but you don't need much - wouldn't want to live there forever though a lot of goshiwon rooms don't have windows. Fortunately mine did, but the rooms across from me all did not (and were therefore slightly cheaper). The kitchen was also on a different floor so I didn't use it much - we had a water machine on my floor though that you could get cold or boiling water from. I usually ate my main meal at uni then just snacks for the evening. Mold was a huge problem which was pretty awful - I had a window, which helped; idk how people in inside rooms did anything about it.

For anyone that watches this in the future, this guy makes KZread videos too. He's a super nice guy and his KZread videos are subbed in English.

He seems like a hard worker who takes his studies seriously and is willing to put up with living in the equivalent of a closet because it is the responsible thing to do. He'll probably remember being stuck in that cramped little room and use it as motivation for success as he gets older. Hard work now will pay off later, and before you realize it the hardships you endured will be over. As long as he maintains a good attitude he'll probably do well in life.

TheAsianOneWC Actually, some residents even live in cardboard boxes in the halls of residential buildings. They’re barely big enough to fit them to be honest. Also, I found out that if somebody died in one of them, they would go unnoticed for weeks or maybe even months because nobody really cares or knows.

I was seeing this interview and the man is so sweet and good natured. A good son and really hard working and i feel i wanna take care of him. I wish students have more conditions in SK. They really deserve to have good living conditions to perform well at school. Respect for all the youngs in SK🙏

Competitive culture may not be good for an individual but it's beneficial to the progression of human society .

I relate to him a lot. I study in London at an University. There is no such things as goshiwon in London but If you're lucky you can get a very small room like that in a private accomodation for just a tiny bit more expensive. But my parents can't help me with expensive rents and a lot of times I don't have time for a job. So rooms like this or shared rooms is the best I can get, a lot of my friends are like his and (before the pandemic) I used to spend my days at uni just so I wouldn't go back to my room. I should do KZread like him that would be a start

I'm currently studying in Seoul as an exchange undergrad student, live in one of those goshiwons and spend less than 5,000won a day. You might feel pity for me squeezing myself in such a small space, but actually no. It's super comfy for me, since it has everything I need. A bed and a desk are simply enough me cus ultimately sleeping, eating and studying are the only things I do in my room. I love how it provides rice for free and has decent security as well. I don't really feel like I'm making sacrifices, but rather I appreciate Korea offers this option for those who don't need large spaces for their rooms.

Moreover, when a teenager first moves away from his or her parents' house, they find it foreign to have to do on their own everything that their mother used to do for them. It will take some adjusting - and some of them never adjust.

the interviewer is really warm and respectful and the boy is really humble, intelligent and hard-working. nowadays it's getting harder and harder to even find a tiny place to live.

She has such a lovely, respectful interview style that is both considerate and unintrusive, and what a lovely, soothing voice.

Also I hope the people in places like this where you have to share bathroom and kitchen are neat and clean up after themselves. Also I hope these places Goshiwon that are mostly close to colleges and schools mostly rent to students who are in school. I like the Korea do things like this. Lots of countries are far more open about what they have and what they earn. In my opinion this is a good thing. Related: I think salary secrecy breeds and enables inequality where I am from.

Lou M-H I don’t think salary secrecy is what they are talking about, but rather privacy and what is considered courteous in the US and other western cultures. The salary secrecy you are talking about is what is done with in a company, for example telling employees that talking about earnings is considered gossip and gossiping is a fire-able offense. In Korea, asking one’s earnings is just a part of the norm, but in my area that is t something you would talk about with strangers. I personally put finances up there with religion and politics as touchy conversation topics.

I really like their mannerisms; so polite and soft-spoken. I admire this young man's drive. It's tough being a struggling student. I wonder if these type of dwellings will be developed in the U.S.

Coz it's really cold there...and the room heaters in korea ... especially in goshiwons ...u can't use them all the time... So they have to suffer in the cold sometimes... So, that may be the reason , she took his blanket

I am so blessed as my parents lifted my education completely.

I stayed in gushiwon for 7 days just after came to seoul. I cherished the memory and my first impression still now. The first thing to came to my mind was how small yet everything is there. Mine was smaller than his, literally exactly same as king sized bed. But wardrobe, tv, single bed, fridge, book shelves and many hangers and internet and local landline. Also provides free rice and kimchi. Fellow tenants are so quite. To live long, just you make yourself comfortable without feeling any downside of small space.

Asian boss has reveal the dark side of each country in Asia.. Rather than travelling to other countries because of their attractive places, we also need to learn hardship or difficult side that other people in the countries have earned.. :)

how is this dark? id call the clubs where women for example get forced into prostitution dark.. maybe for someone rich and privileged this is dark but most people go through hardships to get to their goal. without struggle theres no succes as they say. also this is temporary, so I hope he gets a comfortable place and great job later.
