Considering how in the United States, a large amount of people I've talked too (and myself included) have seriously contemplated suicide at least once, it doesn't surprise me as much as it should to hear that another country has a similar situation. Though how many actually carry it out here is probably much lower, and in my personal experience is probably because my high school at least was actually rather nice.

I am a Korean student, and there is something just as outrageous. Going to a good high school is considered as a huge respect; say you went to high school A, which is the best high school considered in our country. But then you graduate with the highest grades and then you decide enter college B, which is the second best college in the country. Guess what? You're considered a failure.

There is no comparison to be honest..north Korea you are already indoctrinated and brainwashed into living a shitty life unless you are part of that 1 percent to there...and forced to work god knows how many hours of manual labor or whatever the fuck they do there

I'm Korean and in Seoul there is something called the 8 areas of Kangnam, which the most prestigious schools are located, and studying there literally gives depression to everyone. Their status is valued by how you are more superior to the others. To get the highest grade, you have to be in the 4 percent of all students. For example, 96 out of a total of 100 is an excellent score, yet if the 4 percent of all students managed to get a 100, and the next percentage which is 7% gets a 98, the next 11% gets a 97, you can get a grade 4, which is a grade that is actually impossible to go to a good college. Also, Koreans don't get a chance to see the exam(수능,which is the korean version of SAT/ACT) multiple times, so your life depends on that one exam. All the studying you did is meaningless if you screw it up that one time. It's sad I'm actually living in this judgemental country. They even look down on you if your major isn't related to science/engineering/math. It's hard for people like me who want to major in literature or the social arts.

It's a shame, I hope things get better for you. It angers me to see you guys go through this mess. The saddest part of it is the acceptance like you said. I'm an American myself, but I don't like how judgmental society as a whole is. I sympathize with you all because I went to elite American schools, although there is no comparison I have a small taste of what you go through. I'd never judge someone because they passed or failed one exam.

I hope you can break this and follow your dream! I really concerned about this! I want to learn the Korean language and live in Soujt Korea. But I see there is so much pressure studying or even working there. BUT I do not want a life like that. But my dream is to learn the language and at least visit the country. I find your country a good and productive country. BUt I am afraid of their system. I think I should look for another dream. I am kinda sad but what I do? I do not even know what to do or what career to choose.

When I'm older, I'd rather have "C" kids who are confident and eager to explore a variety of subjects than those with accolades in a variety of areas and straight A's who are crying every night over a 90% grade.

@@Aj-me8mo Well, then perhaps you benefit in this type of format, which is great! 👍 However, not everyone can do it in this way. For example, some people would rather have young kids stay inside to learn. However, much of the modern workforce requires a hand on approach. Kids, especially active ones, may benefit from exploratory learning by being outside for instance. Obviously, it’s far from perfect, but maybe learning could be take a varied approach. It would be better to emphasize personal health as well as its integral to learning and strength.

I'm a full out REBEL and I tend to question the rules and authority. But the thing is, I go to an extremely religious school so if I express my mind, I can get *expelled* and this would ruin my future in my community.. So I have to bottle up all my opinions and save them till I'm older. And it is SO hard, it makes me depressed.. I just want to run away.. So my parents think that getting me broadway tickets and the best luxuries will make me happy. But it doesn't. Only Freedom will...

Youth, are probably THE MOST important asset to civilization. To treat us like this is just cruel. My point is, we need to loosen up on these rules. We need children, teens, and young adults to be encouraged to Question the rules. Don't try to be perfect because "perfect" doesn't exist. But for some stupid reason we still try to be perfect, only to be accepted. The world I envision is a world where we'd be brave. Ask questions. Take risks. Make mistakes. Fail. Learn. And Prosper.

@@schnitzelberry A small amount of the teenage population are committing suicide compared to the general population so it will only have a small amount of impact compared to the befits that this high pressure culture produces for the society economically. this is how it is seen by wider Asian society so no one will change it. i agree it is sick but government and general society see the population as disposable thats just human nature and its disturbing.

As a Indian student, I think the feeling of being at top of everyone feels good. but it also brings a lot of responsibilities. for example Most of the top-ranking students especially during the board exams. they have the fear of their position on the board being stolen by another student so to defend the title they work really really hard both day and night. some students study all night. so I think there should be some change in the Indian education system.

I was born in the US and moved to S. korea. I'm currently 16 and living in a pretty competitive area. What is shown in this video is absolutely true, and I'd even say reality is much worse then what's shown in this video. Students study atleast 3 hours and max 10 hours a day (not including school time). A 13 year old in my school commit suicide because she didn't think she was good enough. But what's sad is that she was actually really really smart, always being in the top.

Koreans are like this, outside of school too. We are just extremely competitive in every aspect of life, with extremely high standards for literally everything. That's why we have to work that much harder. I don't approve of it, but that's my experience in day-to-day. It's competitive in every thing we do.

@@kaavi1391 Among Korean corporations, Samsung's electronics department is one of the most hardest to get in. They are well known for paying you well but notorious for their working hours. You literally only have time to sleep, eat, and work (maybe... just maybe an hour of free time per day). You have to work on weekends often too. Yea I would categorize that as corporate slaves. A lot of big corporations are also like that in Korea. You usually don't get overtime pay.

As a college Student, I spend more time dealing with anxiety, depression, and studying and if my grades fall so does my mood and on top of that I have to hide it from my family. I literally cry at night

Its ridiculous, as a comment some few above yours explained that forcing education like this just doesn’t work, the greatest mathematicians, scientists all had a passion for their subject and a lot grew up poor without access to knowledge but when they were able learn, they were passionate about it. They also probably didn’t spend 15 hours a day on studying, its not healthy and thats why a lot of the kids who make it through here have mega depression and anxiety If i spelt stuff wrong im sorry, im form Poland

As a fellow Korean, I really hope you have achieved your dream. You are very wise to figure that out in a system that brainwashes you to believe the complete opposite.

When I was a sophomore in college I was roommates with a Korean lady (she was 25) who was also attending my university. She was from the upper class in Korea. She told me that of some of her former classmates set themselves on fire after failing the university entrance exam. She herself was beaten every night by her mother to study all night to get As. I was 18 at the time and this was back in 1981. I had never heard of that I was in shok hearing such things!

No joke, I’m s. Korean and I feel like they only care about us when we die :/

As a person who is living in Korea, this is really sad. The pressure from the parents to their child to study excessively from a young age is extreme. These children, if they don’t meet up to the expectations of their parent’s, get very stressed because of the scolding they will receive. They should be sleeping and learning more valuable things instead of solely investing their lives in academics from grade 1 to 12. I hope this situation improves any time soon.

Honestly, from a outsider perspective I think it’s insane. I really could never do it would be so hard for me to even do this routine for one day. I really feel for these kids like I only go to school from 8:30 am to 3:15 pm it’s like nothing compared to what they have everyday

Studying in the UK after finishing that routine when I was 15. Seriously, even though I didnt work as hard as I used to in SK, got the first place in school and received an offer from Cambridge. Feel like it was not that difficult for me to get to Cambridge, though it's one of the most prestigious unis in the world and incomparable to any other Korean universities. Tbh going to top Korean unis would be much harder than any other top unis in the world.

Pretty similar in Turkish collage exam i gave my last three years for going to a top univercity in country. Sad reality is even the best of the best univercity even if you can be first in 4 million student it is still pretty bad one compare to us and europe collages. Even i wanna kill myself i cant stop studing, i want to do good stuf in future. I wish i could go to an ivy league univercity like you but i dont have anything to put in my resume other than reading a lot.

@@blu-rae864 I’m horrible at going to bed at a decent hour. Just try and get 8 hours of sleep whenever you can if you can’t do that aim for 7. And if you’re really tired and are able to take a nap in the afternoon. I do that all the time.

@Lukas because they focus on an individual craft, or rather a subject they excell with passion. They are not bombarded with 16 subjects like us but rather pursue the subject of their choosing. For example if you are good at math but bad at history, then you will choose a class focused on math and vice versa.

The main issue isn't suicide though, its a problem but poses no real existential threat to the existence of the nation. The real issue is the constant scrambling for academic achievement leaves young adults with very inept interpersonal skills/ time for personal relationships leading to record breaking low birth rates. These birth rates will first strain the economy by putting the burden of looking after an ever increasingly aging population on an increasingly diminishing workforce. If not its not changed soon the south Korean government itself predict the nation will simply no longer exist in 700 years time. granted 700 years is plenty of anything to happen but its still a pretty surprising statistic given how rapidly the world population is growing in general.

Oh yeah when you go to the real class of toppers(institute classes or cram school as you would know) you feel like you are just a normal kid. I was on top 5th list of school as well but when I went to the institute everyone was like 1-10 top students of their respective schools. Most of them more exceptional than you. You really won't care about how well you did in school cuz it doesn't matter there. You will need to prove in that class that you the top, which is like hella difficult than you could ever imagine.

I initially thought this kind of study pressure is only in China. Now, I’ve leaned that it’s everywhere in East Asia and India.

Damn, south Korea is even more tough and here in my country we complain about academic stress which is nothing compared to South Korea academic stress.

@@komocakeps527 it is very true for some of them. My Korean friend told me too. Basically in Korea the most common way to find a gf or bf is to be introduced to each other by friends. So friends suggest someone they know and one of the first questions is 'what uni does she / he goes to" and it has to be same league or higher than the other persons. Or they wouldn't even go on a date. Of course its not true for all Koreans . But it definitely is a real thing. Good education increases your status and chances to marry well.

this comes the idea of people marry the same or higher status of oneself that was one of the main things why my brother left home to live alone from HS year 3 (which is grade 12 in Canda iirc) my dad kept saying "you need to go to Seoul U so you can marry someone who went to Seoul U as well. so you can have a good marriage since both of you are well educated. and when my brother brought his GF and friends, he asked them their grades first. that being said, after my brother left home, my parents and I went to Canada for education, ever since then they've been mellow about this whole thing after seeing Korea's mentality is shit after experiencing Canadian education and stuff.

I am a Korean who had spent my childhood in the US, South Korea and other country. I DO NOT want to raise a child in SK. I would never let my child go through what students in SK are going through. Also, November is when the Korean SAT is held. During these times, apartments and buildings make sure they lock the door to the roof because many students fall and die.

I'm from Asia. This stereotype probably exists bc our curriculum is much more different than the curriculum in the West and some European countries. I'd talk to foreigners and often times the topics we studied in 9th grade are the topics they're studying at what seems to be 11th grade in their country, at least according to them. That and the overwhelming pressure your parents put on you to be successful, but at the same time balance extracurricular activities and chores. I'm sure not all Asians can relate to this, but my friends and I constantly oof because of our parent's expectations. lol 👁️👄👁️ Edit: Academic wise, our passing grade is 85%, but when it comes to my family I need to get at least a 90%. 👁️👄👁️

@@aori583 Well, Asia is not only Korea, y'know? I'm an Asian myself but I do teach myself that failure is something that happens and that it could teach you as well. I don't overwork myself nor do my parents pushed me so hard on my studies. What my parents only say is that "It's not that I really want you to stand out and be part of the top in your school. We just want you to live and happy life in your school without getting in any trouble. And maybe put some bit of effort in your studies and projects as well because private school cost alot as heck." Yes, my parents indeed put me in private school since I'm now a highschooler, and yes, the school do put me pressures but not as worse as the Koreans ones (maybe). But even tho so, I pretty much get the point on how Asian parents really want their kids to be the best, but fortunetly, my parents isn't like that because they already experienced crazy shits and they pretty much know that even without college, they can still find a decent job and earn decent money.

But my mom and dad not like them, they don't say to me study so hard,they don't put any pressure on me that u have to take above 80marks. When i got result of my public exam i was disappointed after seeing my percentage, i got less percentage than i expected. I was so upset for few days,my amma(mom) said don't worry and don't be upset percentage is not everything, u try in 2nd puc public exam.

I live in one of the most poorest areas in America. 60% of my neighborhood lives in poverty and my city is one of the most violent cities in the world. Where I’m from, you have to go through metal detectors and get patted down to enter school just to have a class with 55 kids in it with shitty education. I live in America by the way if you’re wondering. But I like my system more than the South Korean one. There’s no expectations on me. I wish we could switch schools for like a week just so you can see. Just so you can see Detroit Public Schools and I could go to South Korea

Korea is so successful because of their work ethic, but they aren't a very creative country. Which traps the non-academic into a suicidal pit. Time to start encouraging students to write stories, make paintings, write music and make films. You need to give an avenue for people to express themselves and innovate. Those kids commiting suicide might have not fit the academic mold, but they may have fit an artistic one! Keep creating avenues! Nothing wrong with hard work, but if one has no interest in their work, it will only lead to death and depression.

@@angel-tq8gnI used animation as an example. Name me an industry that korea is creative in. Its main industries are manufacturing. Microchipping, ship building, electronics, and car manufacturing. All modelled off of other country's industries. Same with the political system and economic systems that are based off of the United States. There is k-pop and k-dramas but even then they are mostly recycling tried and true plot line or musical themes with a cast or song group that must fit the beauty standards of the society or receive plastic surgury to fit the mold. Korea has a very exacting beauty standard down to exact height (180cm) and double eyelids. Korea has a long way to go, and it does not yet nurture creativity or difference. Not in its school systems or its society. The only exception is film. Otherwise Korea is a very rigid society that doesn't allow difference. A very conservative country that shuns industries that don't obviously make money (the creative ones). The fact that filmmakers come out of that system is accidental more than intentional. Lastly, it has mandatory military service. So please tell me, in what way is korea creative?

I've fallen the entrance exam for three times to pass the best uni in my country Japan and these years I tried to study as much as I can. I was really worn out because of these days. But Korean students seems like having much tougher time than me. I think Asian examination culture is literally crazy.

Still worse for us. Because they still are a developed and advanced nation. Even if I don't go to any college in Korea, look really bad, work at a factory there and get paid minimum wage, I'll be able to live very, very comfortably still. I'll get good enough food, good clothes, and a cheap flat. Now imagine being a minimum wage worker in India. Third world, developing, very low currency and minimum wage. I can't even pay for three daily meals a day with that money. Plus the biggest issue of RELIGION. If this is how tough academics is for them, yeah Id rather find a way out. But then again, there's no guarantee either that youll be a famous kpop group, nor a guarantee to be internationally recognized, let alone barely any guarantee to debut. Plus the pressure of their beauty standards. Holy shit I hope their youths are fine 😭😭

This is just deplorable. There's no other way to look at it. Students are literally being tortured with exhaustion. There is only so much that the human body and psyche can withstand before reaching a critical breaking point. My heart goes out to these students who are faced with a terrible education system that puts the education before the needs of the students.

Respect for this students who worked so hard. I can't even get into their pace. But still, I'm somehow relieve that I've enjoyed my elementary and high school years with fond memories and I've got into a great university in college now. I hope these students now are doing good.

they need to take drugs... the ones that make them focus. My friend bought some drugs for 500$ (illegally) and it helped he stay focus on the exam.

Even their motivational mentality is screwed up. "What? You're tired, stressed, burned out, and suicidal? Don't worry! Keep working and you'll get there!" instead of: "It's not worth your health and well being"

I remember the Arabs and Asians at our college in Switzerland, Looking down on europeans, but I swear, asian girls had white lecturers. Who would pull them thru the courses, in exchange of sex. The Koreans didnt study much, went to the local casino, And the chinese stayed in their rooms , "studied" until dawn. (dont know what for). Whilst a lot of white students had a great time at the local pub, or other, The exam results were the same for all of us.Most of the students advanced to make a career, Beats studying in Korea any day,

@@gunjeed Hagwon school is actually very famous in Korea. The teachers who teach their earn money than normal teachers. In s. Korea, after their school hours, all the students go to this Hagwom school and the teachers teach them ways to cheat in exam. They will teach them how to do shortcuts and get away cheating if I m not wrong...

I’ve been to South Korea before (like a few years ago) and I was a pretty small kid, there weren’t many kids around in the street. But when I asked my mom where they were she told me that they’re usually studying inside and don’t have time to come outside. I felt bad, so I asked if we could buy some candy for them. I’m pretty sure I got jolly ranchers, lollipops and kit kats. Lots of kids started coming out at 8pm, and I think all the candy was gone by 8:10pm since everyone wanted some from the stress they’re having.

Damn. I just realised even after sitting for this damn exam, the men still have to go to the military.

@@scottw6375 Wow. Yeah we get it, here in America we are lazy and dumb but its more than that lol I think we in general actually enjoy our childhood/teenage years in school. Extracurricular activities really are encouraged. Everyone in school does at least one of there: play instruments, act in theater, sing, draw/paint/photograph, write. Plus the clubs that are available to us are fun and we get to take part of society by volunteering. And lets not forget the sports. All type of sports available too, from wrestling to bowling. We pretty decent over here lol

I remember watching this when I was in middle school and thinking how can it be so difficult? Now that I've finished high school I'm thankful for the educational system in my county, I just feel sorry for these folks

I'm a Korean student and I'm 18. Me and my friends have to study really hard and have to push ourselves into our desk even when we are too exhausted. We obviously have to give up our time to sleep as well. Even our school teacher said we have to be a studying machine to survive This is a serious problem and it's really sad that this system isn't gonna change.

These comments from students are heartbreaking. I know this is easier said than done but if you can, convince your parent to send you abroad to study. You are smart, gather information about unis make a pitch if you have to because you truly do t need to lose your childhood to succeed! I can’t imagine what you’re going through but I can sympathise, if the above doesn’t work try your best, graduate and move somewhere else. And please, remember when you get older to break the cycle. Don’t inflict this torture onto your kids. Best of luck!

This is so interesting, it makes us understand a bit better the situation in Korea with students. Mistakes are the ones that brings us up, because we learn from them and that makes us better as people. It´s also important to be happy and mentally stable, the world is not going to end if you fail sometimes. It´s really impressive to see how they didn´t learned that and how materialistic the society is. I hope it changes in a future because we all deserve happiness.

My parents are just like "As long as you get into college, it's fine. At least your getting your education."

//alyssa c// you know what? we have a president who had been kicked out of highschool, took 7 years to finish it and consistently maintained a grade of 75 throughout his gradeschool and highschool years and got passing grades in college but was able to pass the bar exam as a lawyer, became a mayor, prosecutor and now president. so pressuring yourself and achieving high grades isn't always gonna end up good for you. LIVE YOUR LIFE TO THE FULLEST! Our president is Rodrigo Duterte, the things i said he always say it in his speeches.

I'm in the IBDP program at my school. This video makes me look like a lazy kid compared to South Korean students. May God bless their souls and give them the strength and endurance to continue.

Im filipino. Our education system isnt that great. But i work at my own pace and my parents barely give me shit for it. They know that putting pressure or even helping me will only hinder my growth. They let me run my own course. Sometimes i'll do 2 hours a day sometimes nothing at all. But my morale isnt pushed to the limit
