Shop Update! Spinning Tops - New Tools - Laser Engraver Smoke Collection

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Let me share a bit of what's been going on in the shop for the last couple of weeks. We've been working on hard on making some classic spinning tops (designed to keep on the desk and focus your mind with). What started as a simple project turned out to be quite a lot more involved. Also - been playing with the laser engraver and needed a smoke collection system ASAP.

Back in the early 70's, Spencers Gifts used to sell a top + dish as a "desk toy." As I recall, both were plastic, the dish being a hard, smooth composite of some type and the top appeared to be more like an injection molded nylon or similar. Came in a cardboard box, I think. A figured wood top would have been much more elegant. I wonder, though, how the inhomogeneity of wood will impact your top. You should be proud of your home education materials. They sound like wonderful Christmas gifts for children or for parents trying to encourage their children to enjoy learning. Nice video, Linn.

I’ve made several tops for my son when he was younger. I also experimented with “throwing tops”. They are big and bulky tops that you wrap a string around it, wrap the string around your middle finger, palm the top, throw the top side armed near the ground, and with a smooth and fluid motion after releasing pull back on the string. I’ve found gluing a small ball bearing on the tip helps to reduce the friction. Also, a large makeup magnifying mirror is slightly cupped, which makes for a good top holding container.

Studying and pondering design and construction of tops is getting close to Mathias Wandel mindset. I spotted those BIG batteries in the background. I was wondering if you have a drill that will run forever? Those batteries must be for lawn equipment. Those various triangles and things could be developed further and marketed as teaching aids to schools. All of us are jealous of your shop. I would love to have the room, and secondly some of the variety of tools. I don't have the energy to manage all of that. In my tiny little shop right now I'm repairing a broken rocking chair I got from my wife's sister. It won't be perfect but it will be good enough to give away vs. throwing it away.

I remember when my brothers used to make tops as kids they would use a nail as the tip so it spins better. Maybe make brass inserts? or coat the tip a ceramic? I bet it would work great.

Thanks for the info on the laser burner. I haven't been using mine for fear of setting of a smoke alarm in my apartment. I realized that problem when I accidentally burned a hole in a 1/4 inch piece of wood it was not supposed to be able to cut through. I had it set to cut really, really slow which gave the laser ample time to do it's job. I have since purchased a desktop HEPA air filter and am now in my slow process of building a cabinet for it with four sheets of 1/8 inch thick black plastic, two at 24"x36" and two at 24"x48" so I can build a cabinet. Your particular setup makes it easy to build a cabinet for your laser burner. Simply add vertical panels to the side of the desk it is sitting on. If you don't like the idea of a box sitting their when the burner is not in use, make the sides so that they fold down, or slide down the side of the desk it is sitting on. The height of the sides don't need to be more than 12" high plus the amount needed to secure it to the side of the desk. To get all the smoke out of the shop, the cabinet will need to be sealed with a single entry point. Commercial cabinets for laser burners, typically come with two ports on the side. One port is the entry point and the other port is an exit port which has both a fan and a charcoal filter attached to filter the air. I haven't heard anyone complain that they still smell smoke, but then, not everyone is willing to give the cons of a tool they are using. Take care.

Glad to see you have the bench lathe in addition to the CNC. Good to have the right lathe for the right jobs.

Did you try adding weight with Lead? I seen a guy drill down the stem and add molten lead then he refinished the with diff wood. His spun for long time.

I made a bunch of spinning tops and keeping them spinning was no simple task. I found a lot of inconstancies in wood and that made them all spin differently.

16:14 Did you know that if you place a right angle triangle on the circle, where as the sides connect the following points in your diagram. side A connects from ORIGIN to center of CHORD side B is half the length of CHORD side C connects from ORIGIN to where CHORD touches the circle. if D is the right angle distance from center of CHORD to the circle and D = C - A with only knowing the values of B and D, you can calculate the radius of the circle... by solving for C, only knowing B and D Example: with the above information, by placing a CHORD across 2 points of a train track curve, you can calculate the radius of the track curve..
