So I bought a cheap set of tools online since I'm just starting out as a rookie and thought, "man, these are just worthless!" Well, duh, they had to be sharpened. Neighbor gave me a Rockler honing system that works so-so, but only for straight edge tools like chisels. So this video helps a TON! Thanks Phil! The things you're teaching people is invaluable! Of course I am biased since I LOVE all types of woodworking. Thank you again for all your videos, way too cool 😎!!

Great to see your ‘shop’ rather larger than mine, which is just as cluttered but used mainly for metalwork as I build big telescopes and other astronomical equipment for the two unusual observatories I built. I have converted a greenhouse into my wood turning ‘shop’, lined it out, put a heater and lights in and the various tools, machines etc. our block is a natural wooded hillside 5-acres with good views of the skies and more varieties of Tasmanian hardwoods in various states, a lot perfect for wood turning. I use a two ton Komatsu excavator to do my ‘gardening on the small sections we have cultivated, it is also how I moved my felled dead trees to where I can cut them up. At 83+, my muscles are not quite what they used to be. I have also reached that stage where I can’t be fussed making jigs etc. if I can buy them, time is too precious to waste on making tools, fittings etc. it takes time away from using my big telescopes, wood turning, keyboard playing, landscape painting, growing our foods hydroponically, and the list goes on. Don’t know how I do it for the money!!. Thanks for the tour. I enjoy seeing other people's shops and get some ideas on setting up mine. My brother just made a negative rake scraper for me and I was wondering what angles to try. This will give me a starting point. My son just showed those angle finders and I have to get one. Thanks again.

It all looks good to me. I like your view of the sky (trees). I don't know how many videos I've seen and you complain it's cold. I would definitely put up some insulation and hook up that heater. Your shop is more cluttered than mine. Maybe I should show my wife.

Phil. Great expltion of thing again. One thing I do on sharpening is I take a piece of duct tape and write the degrees on the tape. I also take a magic marker and color the end of the tool to see when the angle is correct. I have one of the triple holders but never new what it was. Now i know. Thanks for your info

My husband and I watch your channel and love it. He just started turning wood a couple months or so ago and he loves it. He has been a machinist by trade for over 40 years so it made sense to progress to wood turning after our bil gave him a wood lathe. He has made trees, candleholders, bowls etc. Love it! We are wondering what kind of pen you use to sign your beautiful creations? We have tried a few and we're just not sure. Lol Thank you! We will keep watching! Yours is the best!

Hi Sandra! I use an Ultra Fine Point Sharpie. The trick is, I only put paste wax over it, most everything else causes the ink to run. I hope that helps. Thank you so much for your very kind comment! Phil

Hi Phil, this tour made me sad and glad at the same time. Glad because now I don’t feel so bad about the clutter in my garage shop, and sad because I would love to have some acreage where my shop is not two meters away from the neighbors. At least I have good neighbors, that do not complain about the noise of the machines.

I started turning a little over a year ago and fell in love with it. My nephew is in the logging business and have a great supply of blanks. My shop is 10x16 and just has room for me to walk. I have full-size tools and miniature tools but little space. Thanks for the videos.

Thanks for the tour, Nice touch. I wondered how your shop was set up. I have a work in progress with mine, I have to come up with a chisel rack, i found that the shaft falls out if I stand one in a hole drilled in a bench top. Resharpen, won't do that again. I have installed and hooked up a natural gas heater in my garage, it is a lot more comfortable.Keep up the great videos. Rob from Oakville Ontario Canada.

Hello Phil. Partly on my question about sharpening this video answered. It will be necessary to make yourself such a device. It is a pity that turning is my hobby and not my main occupation. Time for hobby only Saturday and Sunday summer. Winter workshop is not available in the country, far from the city and a lot of snow. Thanks for science!!!

Good for you, Louis! Can I assume if you are taking a step up to CBN that you've already got a great jig, like the Wolverine? With that combination, sharpening is a breeze and I think you may get more personally involved in a piece when using HSS tools. At least, I do. You can just feel the wood better, helps with the creativity. Thank you, Louis! Phil

Thanks for all the videos Phil! It's great to be able to see your workshop and it sounds like you're in a beautiful location. Yes, I suppose the heater would be a great addition - in AZ an air conditioned shop is a luxury. How about a woodstove for your mistakes?? The chisel rack makes me nervous, but other than that I love your shop.

A wood stove would be nice, John, but no room. I was trying to think why the chisel rack would make you nervous but I guess it's because the pointy ends are up? That was a concern when I set it up but I have never even come close to getting a scratch. Maybe there's more room than it looks. Anyway, I love it! Thanks for stopping by! 😊

I forgot to mention that I live in NC but I spent 8 weeks at Ft. Lewis going thru advanced infantry training during March and April of 1967 and I think it rained every day. Beautiful State but wet and moss grows on everything.

Phil. Thanks for the video on your shop. Made me feel better about the condition of my shop. It’s not as big as yours but it’s cluttered. Mine is attached to the my garage so I don’t have to go outside and it’s insulated and I have a small electric heater.

Phil, looks like you have an opportunity to thin out the machines you don't use so you can plan to get that one machine you've always dreamed of. Possibly an upgrade to one you have now. Hmmm 🤔 makes you think doesn't it. Us rookies would love to have some of those used machines collecting dust. It would give you so much more space back in the shop. Just sayin'! and your wife didn't put me up to this either. 🤣😂🤣♥️

I was looking for ideas on what to do with beautiful trees that I had to fell on my property when I came across your channel. I love what you do, especially the unusual shaped bowls. I live in Port Townsend, not too far from you. Could I pass on some Alder pieces to you?

Hi Phil, That is one amazing shop you have,,,and a good supply of lumber too! Hear I am hoping Santa will leave me an old/used bandsaw! LOL Woodworking has always been my nemesis so I don't have any lumber or woodworking tools per say.Although I do much better working with metal! Maybe with you ability as a wood worker and turner and with a shop like yours (loaded to the hilt with dry lumber) you could make some awesome segmented pieces to turn on your lathe? Thank you, Tom! The shop was a pleasant surprise when we first looked at buying this place. It wasn't mentioned in the listing, just discovered as we walked around the property. I envy your metal working skills, for sure. You have made some truly wonderful, inspiring pieces. You can do so much with metal that just can't be done with wood. But, I have always loved woodworking so I'll take what I can get. I could do some segmented pieces, but just don't have the patience for thinking anymore. LOL! Phil I loved the shop tour. I am wondering why you cover your machines though. So we do think a like . Starting with the wood collection. That gas heater is something I have been wanting to do for ages. But I have gas right where I need it so I have no excuse. Great tip on the digital angle finder. Something I thought about today was both rails need to be exact location or the line does not good. Guess what I checked mine and they were way off so I fixed that now the line works on both wheels. I love the location that you live in. The trees are great. We have 100 foot fir trees right in front of our place and a 1/4 acre of firs to our right. But we are no longer in the sticks. Oh and I am ready to make the plunge to CBN wheels. Thanks for the tip on getting wider ones. Not sure if my Rikon will power 2 of them though. When we travel in the motor home we make a point of staying at least one Walmart just for the fun of it. And I am a cheap old man LOL Looking forward to when you have time for some woodturning videos. I love to learn techniques from you. Nice job Phil and have a Merry Christmas Gary

I actually edited out the part about why I cover my tools, Gary. I didn't want to start a conversation about what I can do to solve the problem but, here goes. One night after dark, I walked into the shop and had to duck my head to avoid the circling bats! And, bats, just like mice, leave stuff behind. I always wondered where those little rust spots on my tool tables were coming from! The bird blocks in the eaves don't have screening over them. And, there are large gaps around my big doors. I have ideas on how to solve the problem but, like the gas heat, just don't seem to find the time. Good tip on the rails and using both sides. I did spend a great deal of time setting my jig up so I'm pretty sure they are exactly the same, but now I'll check. I love our trees but, as always this time of year, we just had a wind storm and now I have branches all over that need to be picked up. Oh, well, Spring is coming! LOL! I think your Rikon is more powerful than my Porter Cable. It might be a slow start but it will work. Sometimes I give the wheels a spin before I turn it on. I love overnighting at Walmart just for the people watching! And yeah, it's cheap! I'm just finishing my next turning video for next week. I don't think you have much to learn from me!
