Good afternoon, Phil. I think I started watching this video and something pulled me away. Happy to have found it again. This is the video where Gary, The PaPa 1947 stopped by to visit with you. I have been watching both of you for quite awhile and enjoy everything both of you bring to woodturning. Great to see you in the shop together. This bowl is beautiful. The inside sanding sure can be difficult to sand with this shape. Job well done. Blessings to both of you.

At least I think those were the voices I was hearing..lol But it was so great to finally meet you and share stories and see your shop. It was an amazing finish for a great trip we had out in nature. Another way to sand pipe-like cavities is by coiling cloth-backed sandpaper around your slotted wooden sanding stick. Phenolic rod is an excellent choice for a slotted-rod sanding stick and is strong enough to put in a long slot for wider cloth-backed sandpaper for sanding where there are interrupted cuts. In the metalworking trades, usually, steel rods are used, but in woodworking can leave nasty marks if not careful. I like the attention you pay to safety and thinking out the process, priceless information and technique for everyone.

Hi Phil, my name is Cheryl from Australia. I am a newby to wood turning and haven't even turned anything yet mainly because I haven't anyone to teach me how to do it. Your videos are extremely useful to me and very informative. Thank you so much for taking the time to explain what you are doing and why. Your new fan from Australia, Cheryl
@PhilAndersonShadyAcresWoodshop
3 жыл бұрын
Fantastic, Cheryl! I hope when you are ready you will enjoy your new hobby! I learned just about all I know about turning from watching hundreds of hours of videos. I would say there are two key details to turning. Get a hold on a piece you are comfortable with. That allows you to think only about the turning, not about "what if it goes flying." Use a light touch on the tool. You can always apply more pressure during a cut but starting out with heavy pressure just about guarantees a catch. Enjoy! 😊

@@PhilAndersonShadyAcresWoodshop thanks so much for the reply. I appreciate your advice and I will work with it. I have actually got quite a few lovely round burls I have collected over time and I believe one of them will do nicely to start me off. I will keep you posted on my progress if that's ok. Again, thanks for posting your terrific videos teaching us newbies how it's done. Kindest regards Cheryl from Australia. ☺💜

Hey Phil, very nice. Good to see Gary too. The way I sand inside lips is to use a 1/2" dowl. Make two cuts in the dowl like an "X" about 2" deep. Then you can put up to 4 pieces of paper in folded like a "U". Use a drill of course. Whirl the lathe as slow as possible, needs to be 100 or less, or turn it by hand while sanding. It's sort of like a small Sand-O-Flex. Works for me. Take care, Larry
@PhilAndersonShadyAcresWoodshop
3 жыл бұрын
Leave it to you, Larry, to come up with an excellent way to accomplish a task! I do use a half inch dowel with one slit to do the same. But, I like your idea so much better! More paper, faster and better sanding. I will modify mine and put your idea to use. Thank you, buddy! Hope you are doing well!

Hi Phil, When I saw the title I thought "Is it going to be Gary????" What a wonderful surprise to see two of my favourite turners standing next to each other. I have learned so much from you both and you have always given advice when I have asked for which I am truly appreciative. The bowl looks amazing Phil, as usual, and your camera angles show how to present the tool to the wood correctly. I'm sure you will find projects to use your new sanding heads on before long. I was also shouting for a tenon but the storms over the pond must have drowned my voice out. Brilliant work Phil and take care my friend. Cheers, Huw

I know someone who used to turn wood. He did all sorts of stuff but, one time, sanding a hollow form, he got 'got.' Shattered his hand bones, which required a total rebuild with steel pins. As always (well, almost always), I love the piece. I have countless chunks of wood like that which have nice figure but usually get tossed in the smoker because I don't have a lathe or much time for messing around with tiny carvings. I really should start saving some.

@@PhilAndersonShadyAcresWoodshop If I had any affordable way to send it to you, I would! I priced out shipping one time when I was going to send something heavy (similar to a chunk of wood) to a friend. It was $60. One time, I had a perfect piece of apple which I knew was hiding something amazing. I asked a friend who was a wood turner to turn it for me, offering to pay his labor, if he could finish it by Xmas. That was last year, Sept., and I still haven't seen it!
