    Wow! Thank you for showing us your workshop. I enjoyed the tour. It was fascinating and specially interesting for someone like me who has no idea how the wood turning process is done from scratch to shipping. The tools and machines indeed help with your productions. This vid is definitely informative. Thanks again for sharing. 👍🏻🤗⭐️💕🇺🇸

    Jim, About 8 years ago, I purchased a Tormek 2000. I wore out the standard stone in about two years and upgraded to Tormek’s harder black stone. As it still occasionally needed flattening with Tormek’s diamond jig, which took about 30-40 minutes, I purchased a 10 inch 800 grit CBN wheel from WoodTurners Wonders for about $300. The water mess was eliminated and the black metal buildup on the wheel is quickly removed by wiping the turning wheel with paraffin oil. As I sharpen my tools before they get dull, sharpening with Tormek’s bowl gouge jig and the 800 grit wheel takes just a minute. I have not tried to set the jig to match an extreme swept-back tool tip. The CBN wheel still cuts like new after several years, but I go to my grinder if I want to rough-out a new tool tip shape before heading to the 800 grit wheel to finish sharpening.

    Dear jim, thanks for the shop tour. I am envious of all your higher end machinery. Goes to show: Serious job = serious tools. You mentioned the noise your thicknesser makes. If you changed the cutter-block to a spiral carbide insert array {eg Shelix}, you will be blown away by the increased power, cut quality and less noise. I looked it up and it cos a bit over $1,500.00 CAD. Cheers.

    Hi Jim...you may know this by now....the "Oneway" part of Oneway Manufacturing is but a part of a much larger machining company. They absolutely make left handed threads....inboard and outboard. Give Kevin a call and I'm fairly confident he will custom build you a shaft...if you want a left and a right on it. As to power....mine (24/78) has the 3 hp moter...I'm a very large fellow, using a 3/4 Thompson...24" sugar maple blank...I could not stall it. It did rip steel chunks out of the tip of the tool...3 times. There were no rocks or nails in the wood. You won't regret the purchase. Dan

    When I bought this lathe I called them and they flat out refused to work with me. I told them that I would pay for it and it was a flat out NO! I was really disappointed because I really wanted a 2436 and I knew it was a better lathe than the General. That was in 2012, I don’t know if they’ve changed their attitude but it really pissed me off. Jim

  • @burntleafcreations

    @burntleafcreations

    @@SpragueWoodturning Jim...my apologies...you're correct. The left hand treaded spindle I knew about on the oneway was made by the guy who bought it. I called Kevin at oneway to see what the modern policy was. He has no interest in doing one....and stated his reasons. It becomes a limited tool...a great many of a turners tool are made for right hand treads, most hollowing tools (that I've seen), coring set ups, vast majority of drill bits...and so on. You would have to also build/find a ton of new tooling to do what you do. He also made several points I felt were true from my experience...us right hand turners do have to teach ourselves left handed technics to stay out of the line of fire; something you would do naturally. When it comes to hogging out bowls, their out boarding options are fantastic...allowing me to be standing right in front on bowl. Anyway...I hope I didn't get your emotions going too much. Dan

    Hi Jim, new subscriber, been turning for 40 years . I have had a General 260 for 35 years thousands of hours on it. I had experienced tailstock creep as well. I came across the fix in an old issue of the AAW journal. David Ellsworth said that he fixed his by making a longer locking plate that fits under the ways. I made mine the same length as the tailstock body and unless I am really cranking on it no more creeping. If I have to put that much pressure on it then there is something else I need to adjust. Enjoying the videos, keep up the good work and I hope this helps.

You seem very organized , knowing where all your tools are located is half the battle to accomplish a beautiful bowl in a short time. I noticed all the bowls in the back wall behind the lathe. Great Shop and Happy New Year. I enjoy the slow speed grinder with cbn wheels. I have two, one with 80 and 350 grit for woodwork and one with 180 and 600 grit with the Kodiak sharpening system for lathe work. Took me awhile to get them but I do love it. I did have the tormec but it is slow and messy!

    enjoyed this tour.... just a thought on your sander ...I recently bought a used saw . It also had no power ( could hold the blade on start up just like you did in the video) tried new capacitors and relays...no luck checked the wiring schematic and the previous owner had a 115 volt plug on it , but the wiring was connected up to run 220 volt.... switched wires and now it has plenty of power might be worth checking out Keep up the good work! happy new year!

    Hi, Jim and a Happy New Year to you and yours. On the Tormek sharpening system, I bought one about a year ago and my only regret is that I bought the smaller version, which has only one possible sharpening stone. It’s brilliant otherwise and I am even thinking about investing in the larger one - the repeatability is excellent and the range of jigs (most of which I have) means I never have a blunt axe, gouge, knife or chisel these days - I’m not a fan of sharpening but it’s so quick and easy. Highly recommend it. I’m neither Swedish by the way nor a rep of the company!!

    Fantastic Video Jim, like you i was a mechanic and left handed, and those skills have helped me to repair and work out how to overcome problems. What a lucky guy to have a workshop that size and the range of equipment. Would like to try the finish you use but finding it difficult to purchase it here in the UK. Only subscribed a few weeks ago and have now watched all of your video's, just wish i could get some walnut here. I like spindle turning but have now been inspired to do more bowl turning after watching a master at work. Look forward to your next video, congratulations on reaching 15k and keep safe.

    Congrats Gene! Hey Jim, great video! I appreciate you sharing your entire process with us!! You mentioned the lighting above your lathe and not being able to find something you like. Laguna makes an LED lathe light that is adjustable in both intensity and temperature. May be something to consider as you can always change the color to something that looks good on camera. That was certainly one of the reasons that I bought mine. The other being that I actually have a Laguna 1836 but, the lamp comes with a clamp mount so you don’t have to have the mounts on the lathe itself in order to use it. Plus, it’s not astronomical in price. If you’re interested, let me know and I can email you some pictures of my setup. Thanks for all of your videos this year! I look forward to what you have in store for us in 2021! - Seth

    They make a flush mount light it has spring clips in it... it is about the depth of drywall. You can get a range of different light whether it be 3k 5k or 8k and probably higher. I use them a lot in Homes during construction due to their clean look. Reason I am telling you about them is because they are relatively cheap between 30 to 100 per light depending on manufacturer and you can run 25 of them on one circuit. Super bright and very wide area of lighting. You should check them out they will light your shop up unbelievably! They are LED. Keep bringing me content Jim. Congrats to gene!

    Just subscribed to your channel and to your instagram as well. Great work from what I have seen. As a fellow Canadian, thank you for your service in the military. I am a retired dentist and have been woodworking for about 20yr now. I enjoy the fine detail of your inlay work. One suggestion with the soapstone...I use a fine file to create my soapstone powder for my inlays. Easier than crushing for me. I also save the sanding dust from many of the woods for inlay details and crack repairs. Now, back to watching more of your videos. :)

    For sharpening the huge game changer was switching to CBN wheels and diamond hones. Never again do I have to dress a grinding wheel and the edge they leave is far superior to anything I have ever seen before. The industrial cutter grinding industry has been using CBN wheels for decades day in and day out. I too am left handed but have no issues with threading direction on my Powermatic 4224B lathe.

    @@SpragueWoodturning The headstock on my lathe slides the full length of the bed and my outboard tool rest stands on the floor. I can turn either direction as needed depending on the wood grain but it is seldom that I have to turn in reverse. Hi Jim Great work you do there. You mentioned that your tailstock doesn’t lockdown solid. Does the tailstock entier surface completely sit down on the bed ways. I had that problem with my Rockwell Delta. If this the issue there are two fixes for. First your lathe must be perfectly level to the floor if your bed ways will be twisted a bit. Second tape two strip of sandpaper on each bed ways and slide the tailstock back and forth on it until the tailstock gets full contact. Clean up and your good to go. Keep up the nice work. You explain things well.

    I had the nice Tormek but quit using it after I put CBN wheels on my slow speed grinder. The Tormek was just too slow. Woodturners Wonders has some great products and videos to guide you if you go the path of CBN wheels. I use mostly the 600 grit wheel. Takes off very little material and makes a scary sharp tool. CBN wheels are very aggressive so err on the finer side.
