...But thankfully, the wind.
They should definitely NOT make a Season 2. Leave it as perfect as it is.
i would've like to see a large scale battle. this ending fits better with Toranaga's character. "Why is it that only those who have never fought in a battle are so eager to be in one?"
I'm still waiting for that war they kept talking about i.e. Sekigahara & Siege of Osaka
They have invested so much into costumes and sets that it would be a shame not to have a sequel season, even if it's only 4 episodes. The plot lines are there for Toranaga to become the Shogun, deal with the regents and have JB build a fleet of ships for Toranaga. And maybe Fuji will change her mind and become his consort/wife again. Afterall, JB did go on tp marry and have children in Japan and lived another 20 years there.
Instead of more Shogun, maybe the creative team could adapt another Clavell novel? There are several in the Asian saga.
Shogun was based on the life of William Adams. He saw some action in the Battle of Sekigahara. He built ships and also sailed expeditions to Southeast Asia for Japan. He also married and had children. There are places the story can go, but I feel badly for the actress that has the unenviable task of trying to replace Anna Sawai.
I said this in the live chat but I don't know if anyone actually saw it. With this show I found out a bit more about history and I know that there's plenty story to tell after shogun. One that could work because it goes with the vibe of the book/show is that William Addams (John Blackthorne) was able to convince Tokugawa Ieyasu (Yoshii Toranaga) to expel (for lack of a better word) all the Europeans out of there. Drama, war and strategy... a second season with all that would be excellent. 👍👍👍
No Mariko. No point.
Leave it alone. Without the best characters in the show that bite it at the end, in my opinion, it will not be the same.
There is a reason the names of certain authors and their work survive over multiple generations. I am very skeptical when people try to tell stories these authors did not, based on their work. Adapting a story for a TV show is something very different from authoring a world and its characters, as we saw with Game of Thrones after the original material dried up. They did a wonderful job adapting the existing material but fell short badly when they tried to continue the journey of the characters by themselves.

If we are now caught up then allow us to continue with a second!!!!!! I’m having withdrawals!
The actors deserve the season to continue, they will always be known for shogun, it won't feel right to see them in a different role in a different way. After all, we need to know Japanese history more.
The original plan was a limited series. A second season would be a cash grab and worse by definition.
Do a movie on the Battle of Sekigahara.
"The Silence of the Lambs" is one of the most perfect movies in history and was not ruined by its mediocre sequels. I still love it just as much. So, I agree with John. Let the writers create a continuing story for another season or two and see if they can maintain the same quality. It won't ruin this first season at all.
No season 2. I loved Shogun and I just bought the book yesterday. When I was watching the show I was initially sad that their was not gonna be a season 2 but after finishing it I just thought leave perfect be.
Not without Mariko 🥺🥺💔

If they follow the actual historical narrative, the heart-breaking demise of Yodo-dono (Lady Ochiba) is much more poignant than the death of either the real Hosokawa Gracia or Clavell’s fictional Mariko. Season 1 Toranaga depends on the death of Lady Mariko to gain power, season 2 Toranaga depends on the death of Lady Ochiba to remain in power. The story is not complete without at least one more season.
Season 2 will be a perfect follow up if they did the Yasuke story. That would be gold. From an English sailor in Japan, to an African Slave in Japan. Both unique and very impactful in the Shogunate eras they ended up in

I think when they say Season 2. They’re talking about adapting another book from the series of books which Shogun is part of
I would like to see a season 2. However, if they have exhausted the source material it's going to be bad.
So - maybe it's because I didn't read the book, but know the some of the history behind it - I felt the last episode was a little disappointing in wrapping things up basically in the last like 10 minutes. I feel like I'm in the minority of people who want to see a season 2, and just one more short season, that yeah - delves in to some of the history beyond the point they end at, maybe actually see at least some of the battle of Sekigahara not just 2 minutes of him predicting how it ends. But that's it, unless they want to show the chaos that occurs before it or some decent side story ideas.
I hope that they don't create a season 2. The show is a masterpiece and we've all seen what happened with game of thrones when it no longer had a book to guide the show. The show was amazing because it was based on a book and because the studio didn't change anything over ideology or politics. It seriously needs to be left alone. Instead of making a season 2 they should simply make a new historical show based on a different book. There's plenty of other stories to be told.
Make the other Clavell books into mini-series: Tai-pan, Gaijin, Noble House, Whirlwind, etc..
The battle needs to be shown

YES. I want it so bad oh myyyy lawdddd. Just a nic pick though…. They don’t NEED it but they 100% could EASILY do a season 2! They don’t even have to do that many episodes! 8 would suffice imo!
Really hoping for a season 2, but I'd be happy if they kept this perfect season as is.
After the death of *** *****, it really is hard, as I believe they were a foundation of the story.
Just make 1 more episode on the battle of sekigahara and toranaga being crowned shogun. Done. I think the show lacked a big battle scene and thats all it needs.
people don’t know what they want. That’s the thing. What they really want is a good quality show/ miniseries like Shogun not a season 2.
I would love a movie based on the battle to come. You could stick to history or go Hollywood with the plot. Characters so are well developed in the series.
On the one hand, one of the most brilliant things about the finale is how Toranaga basically won the war before it started. But on the other hand, I still want to see the war!!!
Doesn't need season 2 tho... It's perfect as a standalone season!!
I hope they atleast release it on 4k blu ray , so i could have this physical disc In my collection...
Don't! If you want to milk it for more just release an 'extended' version. Don't make it like True Detective, or the podcast Serial, one and done!
it needs a second season to cover up a lot of things. the deal with the portugese was never resolved. we never even got to see the portugese captain ever again.
Kinda disagree, I think a bad season 2 can impact the season as a whole. Like seriously, how many people would re-watch Game of Thrones if the last two seasons were an epic conclusion to the story? It wasn't, and I don't know anyone that would re-watch it.
Its a difficult one. While William Adams had an interesting life after and the Tokugawa era is brutal, i dont want them to release something that doesnt match season one.
Look at Dune 2. Look at the Mission Impossible films. Each film keeps getting better than the former. Even Stranger Things S4 came back with a banger. Take the damn risk.
@roidjones
14 күн бұрын
That's not the issue, the show is based on the book and it told the complete story, season 2 will be an original story and that's where they will go wrong
I love every second of Shogun. It is perfect. I hope the showrunners / network don't ruin it wiht a second season order.
_Lone Wolf and Cub_ would be AWESOME in the hands of this creative team - and timeline wise would make a compelling sequel (set later in the Edo period). Would make no sense to continue the story of John and Toranaga unless the sequel’s script took even greater liberties with history than _Shogun_ did, as in real life Tokugawa Ieyasu was not shogun for long, his succession plan worked well for over a quarter of a millennium, and William Adams’ later life during the Tokugawa peacetime was interesting but nowhere as compelling for plot lines like the end of the Sengoku Jidai.
I don't want a second season. Loved the show, but don't let writers re-write the history of a nation. Unless the find a compelling story that is historically accurate, don't do it. Without historical facts to contain the writers, they could do anything. Won't be too long before Mariko is resurrected by a passing alien.
Please don't. Season is perfect on its own. Don't ruin this.
Great Video. In my opinion, a limited series is a just a huge film, that has been stretched out into 6 to 10 episodes of television. That's it. I really don't see how they can come up with a season 2. Anything is possible. But, just because you have the power or right to do something, doesn't mean you should. Chernobyl was a great Limited series. They cleaned up at the emmys in 2019. Did it mean that it needed to transform into a regular series of television? To me? NO. Beef was a great limited series. They cleaned up at the emmys in 2023. Did it mean that it needed to transform into a regular series of television? To me? NO. These shows were good for what it was, a one-off. They didn't have anymore source material to go off of, in order to continue into future seasons of television. If the heads at Disney really wanted to turn this into a 8 to 10 season of television, they could've taken a page from STARGATE. Stargate came out with a film and 3 years later, they followed up with one of the greatest scifi series on the planet, Stargate SG-1. But, that has to be something that is thought out, well before planning the Shogun series. Again. Anything is possible. But, would it be any good, if they were to get 2 or more seasons of Shogun? I don't think so. And, there is no guarantee that Shogun will win Best Limited Series, like Chernobyl or Beef. So, let's not put the cart before the horse. I say, no to a 2nd season of Shogun.
Leave well enough alone. One season is great.
Is Shogun becomes a series, then it shouldn't be a mini-series. Besides, I think Shogun should stay as it is and I hope other James Clavell's novels get adapted.
I'd love to see a season 2, and they actually show the battle they alluded to in the finale

No, because except for Gaijin the settings were not Japan and almost all of these actors are Japanese actors. You really don't want them playing Chinese characters in Taipan; it would defeat the spirits of authentic Asian culture set by Shogun. I don't think Sanada would agree to this. The only other novel is Gaijin and it's a really shitty novel set in modern Japan. It won't be as good as Shogun.

How do you know you can watch it for the rest of your life? It's on Disney+ now! I admit I haven't read the book, but didn't the old TV Shōgun miniseries continue until Toranaga became the new Shōgun? It's been some time since I've watched it. Maybe I should do so again. But with the new series, the end of season 1 really felt like a cliffhanger to me.
If Season 2 happens, then I'm on board! If not, we move on, and I'll be okay about that decision. I would hope Justin Marks and his crew would focus on adapting the next set of books in the ASIAN SAGA and make that their main focus. TAI-PAN seems like the next adaptation that should happen in my opinion.
Writers didn't write the story, they only adapted it. A new story could be good, but bad at the same time, these days it is usually bad when thinking how many bad storytellers are in Hollywood. Look at Games of Thrones, going outside of the story of the books was a mess. Leave things as they are for Shogun and use another good story to adapt it to screen, from same author or another one.
I want the Brothers Sun season 2!!
There’s 6 books ! Why not adapt them FX ? I’m there!
Season 1 did NOT have a definitive ending, it was full of foreshadowing of what Tokugawa will do after becoming Shōgun. For example, before performing seppuku, Yobushige says Tokugawa is only interested in his own power, not the realm - you are the same conniving hypocrite as the rest of us. They don’t have to FIND a story, the actual history is much more compelling than what James Clavell mashed together. Season 2 will show Tokugawa’s character arc as he turns on those who made his rise to Shōgun possible for no other reason than to eliminate all threats to his power.
A better comparison than Hero's. Would really be Game Of Thrones. The author never wrote the sequels. The story is open ended, clearly planning for sequels. That I'm guessing book sales never lead to. Unlike JRR just being to fat and lazy to complete the work he was being paid millions for.
Unfortunately they killed off Mariko and Yabushige who carried the season. I don't see how it can continue without them.

yeah, I remember they killed her off in the first series and got so pissed off that I haven't seen it again and why I won't see this either.

While I agree that bad s2 would not tarnish s1 and how brilliant it is, I believe it's pointless as character of Mariko was the heart of that show. It made it so good BECAUSE of her relationship with Blackthorn and her loyalty to Toranaga. Yes, Toranaga's character is fascinating, but I did watch it more for Mariko's storyline than Toranaga's. Also, he already sacrificed all the closest people to him in order to achieve his goal and to top that, you'd have to introduce new characters that would top that, and I don't see that happening. Also, that WOULD tarnish the impact Mariko had on him. Without her - I don't see myself that invested in s2.

As John pointed out there is a real history that this is based on. Tokugawa Ieyasu still has plenty more in his life that is interesting.
The consolidation of the Tokugawa shogunate could be a cool story. I don't think it can be as good. For one thing, the shogunate isn't the underdogs in the story, and that is always a red flag. However, the story of Tokugawa leading up to Sekigahara has been told over and over. The story of how Tokugawa took that victory and built a stable government that stood for over 200 years until the U.S. effectively overthrew is one that is far less discussed and dramatized. And I for one would be interested in seeing that story.
Clavel, wrote other books as part of a series, sadly the other books have no relation history wise between them, but are really good books never the less.
NO... NO.... NONONONONONONONONONO....... Jeebus DAMMIT, NO !!!!!
The most likely 2nd Season is basically the period between Sekigahara and Siege of Osaka Castle. While Anjin could be written into the story most other fan favorite won't return. New casts will be introduced and I don't know if Western audience will be interested if Anjin is not integrally involved in the plot honestly. There must be a good story somehow to get into the details of Battle of Sekigahara and the fate of Ochiba and the Heir.
@padderz
14 күн бұрын
The battle was a mess. Historically accuracy, would show many samurai and warlords stayed away from the battle, many of Ishido's men changed to Toranaga's side, those that did support Ishido were outnumbered and not really committed to the battle. However, Toranaga's army, were united under Buntaro's grief at the loss of Mariko, so the actual battle would be too confusing a battle cinematically and the hero is the one guy most of us hated. Also, Blackthorne spent many years building ships and acting advisor to Toranaga for international trade. Ochiba's son grew up and fathered two children, one died very young, and he died soon after. His surviving child grew and had children, and the growing dynasty threatened Tomonaga's power as Shogun. So he attacked and killed Ochiba, her grandson and the whole family lineage. And I don't want to grow to hate Toranaga, nor do I want some writers made up history.
So yes we need a season 2, and here’s a real easy way to do it. Season 2 would be a prequel you have John black Thorne telling his voyage from England to Japan and the other set of flash backs from toranaga about his childhood as a hostage till the events of season one the last episode battle final battle and how it plays out wrap done.
Shogun is by far the best TV show I've ever watched, and with it now finished, I do feel like something is missing. However, I would much rather let that hole heal over than want another season. If I wanted more, I would just watch the show again, which I may very well do, just not at this time. I think it's best that Shogun be left as a limited series. Dont make a second season. Quite frankly, it would be a far better move to adapt the other novels in James Clavell's Asian Saga.

Ah, gotcha. I've noticed several people having a hard time keeping a track of all the names, so that's fair. There's also a pretty wide cultural gap between the contemporary, modern-day West and feudal Japan that seem to have caught some people off guard. The whole 'eightfold fence' that Mariko told John about means that a lot of the interactions are more about subtext and reading between the lines than about what's being stated out loud. Needs at least 5 seasons. Season 2: Battle of Sekigahara, sieges of Osaka Castle resulting in the tragic deaths of Lady Ochiba and the heir, end of the Portuguese monopoly as Tokugawa opens up trade with the Dutch thanks to William Adams (Blackthorne), Blackthorne marries, has children and dies without ever seeing England again. Season 3: Tokugawa’s son becomes Shōgun and seeks to expunge all foreign influence. Sakoku Edict. Expulsion of all foreigners and mixed race Japanese (including Blackthorne’s children). Extreme persecution of Christians. Season 4: Jump 200 years to the Boshin War that resulted in the end of the Tokugawa shogunate and beginning of the Meiji restoration. Season 5: Prequel to season 1. The stories have already been written by historians and are much more compelling than what James Clavell mashed together.
The biggest question is why would there be? And How would it be like? Showing Togunawa establishing the shogunate? I think not. History has kind of funny cycles. The fleet the japanese had in WW2 and before was basically english.
I had no idea this was the whole book its really unsatisfactory if this is it for the show its so incomplete like the story is just getting started
I hope not - it was perfect as it was. Some series should just be left alone
