If you are interested in joining any of these retreats, please take a look at all dates that are published on the website of the monastery:

Louragan Coming from a martial arts background... what are your thoughts on the effectiveness of what you learned versus what you’ve been taught in boxing? I’m a martial artist, but have many takeaways from boxing that I find extremely useful as far as combat goes... things that I simply wasn’t taught directly in martial arts outside of finding out the hard way in sparring.

  • @salvatormundi5184

From a martial art perspective, boxing is the closest art from the core of martial art. The very essence of martial art is what makes boxing so great : rythm, distance, timing. These are basics, even though most of martial art practice nowadays totally miss this part. Why ? Because in martial art, we don’t spar. Don’t get me wrong, nowadays, many « boxers » do not spar neither, or very few, or not in a good way. Sparring is necessary. Sparring with anyone, good or bad fighter, experienced or not, tall or small, heavy or light. Sometimes soft sparring, sometimes hard sparring. We need both. I’ve never reached the understanding I have of martial art now before going into boxing, and training hard. And you will get punched, but you must raise and keep sparring. To me, this is the only, unique way to really say we’re martial artist. Bruce Lee himself said that sparring was the most important part of the martial art life. After years of experience and a thousand sparring with hundreds of different poeple, yes, I absolutely understand and agree with this. This is why an amateur boxer can fight without difficulty most of martial art master in the world (considering not a big weight difference). Cause he feels, he sees without thinking, he knows when there is an opening, he knows how to manage a distance, how to fake it, how to control his opponenet rythm and how to break his own, he can also feint... I see boxing as the core of every martial art; every martial art needs what is boxing based on. This helps for any martial art. Even weapons.

SOCADANCEBOOK McLeod Although I agree with you, boxing is also a sport and is as distinguished as other combative sports. Martial arts has for a long time been used to refer to combative systems out of Asia. No one walks around calling boxing or wrestling a martial art (although by definition that would be the case).

Not only does he have a good unbiased perspective on these various topics, he pretty much stated that techniques from forms need to be understood, practiced and pressure-tested. That's been one of my biggest issues with even the best traditional schools I've been to: a technique is taught, explained, practiced alone and with a partner, but never tested with a resisting opponent.

Yes but they said a lot about forms and preparations too! It's not just trashing the body in a sea of destruction, they even said something about feeling and understanding the form and knowing how it affects you. That is building a solid foundation. Chi, endurance, self control, self consciousness... All that not to destroy oneself nor throw oneself into a lack of control. We that are young and start to explore our energy... please don't forget to know and listen to yourself too. I had very hard times due to not doing that... I hope you don't need hard times like that... It takes patience.

What a nice video, well done, filmed with many aspects of the teaching, so audience can have a great taste of shifu yanlei. Shifu yanlei is so funny, quote "kung fu is not rubbish, maybe you are the rubbish" such a classic story teller. I like him. Is there a chance he is coming back again, shot another video?
