Shawn Lane A Second Look Vol 1-3

Музыка

Here is all the music from the Shawn Lane - A Second Look series’ I was honoured to complete, free of charge, last year for the Shawn Lane KZread Channel. #teamshawnlane asked me to do the videos in order to boost the subscriptions to Shawn’s YT channel. This enabled them to monetize the channel and now Shawn’s daughter Ashley can benefit from the proceeds. Job done!
Most of the chops on the third video 7.33-9.26 are Shawn Lane inspired and all the exercises are from my forthcoming ebooks that will explore my Hybrid Sarod alternate picking and legato, amongst other techniques I have developed over 40 years of playing and teaching .
For the full videos see the Shawn Lane YT channel. Download the free transcriptions I did that accompany each video from www.RoyMarchbankGuitar.com
You can also order Phat Bhoy Picks through my website and book a consultation or online lessons.
Any questions please feel free to ask. Apart from the stupid one - ‘Is this sped up?’
The answer is - NO!

I was there the day he recorded that. And of course it just came right out of him in one take. He played it thru a Gjika preamp and head, (the rack mounted one), thru a crappy old Holmes 4x10 cabinet thrown in a closet with a couple of pillows and an SM-57. I honestly forget what guitar it was. It was before he started getting Vigier. Of course when they made him that last Vigier with the flat fretboard, he said he loved it and it was his favorite. It was his last guitar.

@@1tgiuntac395 I have seen Mancuso. He’s good at reproducing some of Holdsworth’s playing but he’s got nothing original sadly, that I have heard. Perhaps one track on acoustic that was his own but it was underdeveloped which is understandable given his age. I have seen the techniques he uses in many a Flamenco player. My thoughts are that because he’s borrowed from there and incorporated some of the style into a genre where listeners are unfamiliar with Flamenco, they think it is something remarkable. It is new to many shredders ears but less remarkable to those familiar with Flamenco. That said, he’s promising, it will be interesting to see how he develops. Nice speaking with you.

Just goes to show you, that Shawn's playing, though at insane warp speed, it was all about what he played. Plus hearing those first few clips, I just thought of something: his phrasing is outstanding, and a really underrated aspect of his playing.

You really brought the essence of some of Lane's fretboard wizardry Roy - and the fact that you slowed it down and tabbed it is priceless. I've always been mystified by his approaches to fretting. People concentrate more on his right hand - which is fascinating in its own right, but that left hand of his was superhuman. Thanks for this!

Thank you! It was a fascinating experience to break things right down and look into some of Shawn’s genius. His understanding and study of Art Tatum was obviously thorough. When he transcribed and modified for guitar some of those lines it was utterly devastating. One can only wonder at what he might have scored today. Happy you got something from this. 🙏

Hey Al, great idea and in an ideal world I could find the time to do that. However, it’s worth noting that the A Second Look format was always going to be three videos per artist, so I have completed the three looking at Shawn Lane. I will do the Nancarrow video in the future when I get the time and for my own curiosity more than anything. I also have an interest in looking deeper into Allan Holdsworth’s music as A Second Look trilogy but again that will have to wait so I can complete my own music and paid commissions. All the best 👍

Honestly I have to say that Roy plays the Shawn Lane solos (yes, I know it's subjective) better than Lane himself did and I think it's a great thing. (I loved the tone too, just absolutely fantastic) What this shows us, is that there is literally another dimension of musical capabilities unfolding before our very eyes and ears too and it should excite the whole music community! Thanks!

Couldn’t agree more. Would have liked to see Shawn Lane have a go at Roy’s solos too! They’re incredibly complex, leaning more to jazz fusion than rock. Both virtuosos but it’s exciting to see Roy pushing on to next level technique in the here and now. As a big Holdsworth fan I see a lot of Allan in Roy too. Great innovators of their generations, humble with it.

Shawn lane was improvvising a lot altough he had his patterns, the new guys DON T!!! everything is written down before and i think it s not the correct way to approach blues rock jazz , to me it doesn t make any sense !! nowadays everybody wants to play faster and "safe" the opposite of truly artists , i mean artists not guitarists , 2 TOTALLY DIFFERENT WORLDS!!

@@mr.dampmods8518 who are the new guys? Not many composers of rock music out there of any merit any more. I like to think Shawn would have ventured more into jazz if he were with us now. As far as I know Roy is over fifty years old so almost Shawn’s contemporary. Old school improviser with the skill and theoretical grounding to draw upon. That’s where many of the young ones miss out, they think they can get by on feel alone. There comes a point though where music gets so complex that they need more to go on to know where it’s possible to take it next.
