I remember my teacher saying you don't learn to run by walking and slowly increasing your speed at walking. Eventually you have to run, this is kind of what Shawn is talking about here. What a legend

Very true. As someone who learned to shred very early I can remember when that spark went off and I broke through the sound barrier. I had to do it just to prove to myself that it could be done. While I retained my chops over the years my focus really changed because I never really liked the shreddy metal scene, even though I played in it in L.A. in the 80s. I wanted to mix R and B and rock with a special twist and I had a lot of trouble finding musicians who saw eye to eye until I just left the metal milieu. I never got to see Shawn live but I was well aware of him in the 80s. He never got the attention he deserved, even among guitarists. He was light years beyond most players, including myself. I never got anywhere near his level. He was also just an all-around better musician than me. I try!

@@EvanDempsey heres a list of what playing the piano taught me about guitar and music -learning the same thing on two different instruments is a tactile way to hear the music more clearly in your head. The clearly you can hear the music in your head (whether its a song, scale or arpeggio) the quicker you can draw upon it (and the faster you can play it) -when playing piano (particularly blues piano) not only am i in charge of playing the leads, but also the bass lines. This has taught me what which and why musical phrases go well together over which chord. Its like im both seeing the big picture, and creating it at the same time -when playing piano, unlike other instruments, the language portion of your brain stays active (you can google that). This has evolved my improvisation from creating words to creating sentences, to creating entire stories.

He is completely right here. Playing fast is a totally different technique vs playing slowly. If you play slowly you are likely to hit a wall. If you go for top speed you then open the door to refine that technique and develop true economy naturally

Because most people are musically stupid, they rather listen to meaningless 3 chord simple music about a broken relationship. Most people are not musicians. Instrumental music just doesn't sell well. It is just the way it is.

  • @Xplora213

Great suggestion he makes here about the rhythmic fragments etc. He is playing so fast that he can’t think about playing a lick, he has to play without thinking and he’s going to completely exhaust the listener unless he is doing something different every single beat, let alone every bar. If you can cleanly play your groups of 5s, 6s and 7s, you are unlikely to need to rely on the same lick library as a Kirk Hammett or a Paul Gilbert. Shawn was truly one of a kind, it was sad to see him pass without the recognition of a G3 tour etc to acknowledge his mastery.

In case anyone is wondering, I've studied Shawn Lane since Buckethead came into my life in 2008 I can do anything they can do except Shawns super fast 6 note triplets with my current rig. The usual delay timing issue. * I play primarily GET YOU BACK and BINGE AND GRAB. by them. ( I feel the last step for me is recapitulating Shawns vibrato correctly. ) If anyone believes that's not good enough, let them proceed to do better. I'm not jelly. I encourage it.
