    Former jazz record producer here. Roy is, as the Moroccans say, 'ras El hanout.' Gabor Szabo, John Mclaughlin, Shawn Lane, Roy Marchbank. Roy's playing is like nothing else, ever, and in any way. I can shred hard, but I was trying to hit standard scales at Roy's speed. I am less than half as fast, after 30 years of trying for speed. Have done those long practice sessions to get my rudiments in order and let me tell you friends, Roy is sailing a different ship. These techniques and erudition stand to revise our understanding of the guitar- no puffery here! The only musicians I have known or studied who are even close to Roy are Art Tatum, Shawn Lane, Joe Diorio and Jascha Heifetz. None of them have Roy's technique or musicality. Perhaps no one ever has had Roy's technique. Totally and utterly stunned. Wow. Now, what will Roy DO with that technique. The Uzbek work is a great start. Pull apart the maqams like Mclaughlin did the rags and (forgetting Indian word for scale). Do like Stanley Jordan (and Tal Farlow and Joe Pass did before) and record some standards- blow our minds like Stanley, Tal and Joe did. But, those guys have a fraction of your overall expressiveness (of which speed and dexterity is but a component) so I will be excited for you to play: 1. John Coltrane 2. Mahavishnu Orchestra 3. Frank Zappa (please do "Black Napkins" with your technique!) 4. Paganini...24th Caprice and play it as clean as Heifetz and Perlman can on violin/viola. Your techniques could put Parkening to shame on this masterwork of virtuosic music. 5. Check out the Sabri Brothers for singers close to your level of erudition- Allah Hi Allah. Qawwali music. I can heard slamming acoustic guitar ring through this tune as you did with the Uzbek group.

    Both. 3/4 piezo w 1/4 Mic dialled in. Chain is Acoustic - Orange acoustic Pre twin channel - Boss LimiterLM2 - Gate - Desk. The Orange Pre is astonishing. Infact, it is so good I bought 2 from its architect Dennis Marshall. They have since become discontinued. When you combine the Pre using (piezo & mic) out to a Boss Limiter (Which is by far superior in its response in pick attack to compression) then gate it hard, that is the result. Every acoustic sounds amazing through this effect chain! That said I also had 'on loan' an acoustic made from the private wood collection of a certain luthier called Abe Wechter. That is the 'sound' you are hearing. I used that guitar exclusively for the Marchbank/Anur NoneOther album. This is where its at for me now. kzread.info/dash/bejne/Zn2TmLCIksjNm5s.html

    @@LawofThree It's amazing man. How would you recommend building speed? I'm a pretty advanced player if I do admit, but my chops are nothing compared to yours. I max out 16th notes around 140bpm and even then I can only play scalar lines. Do you have a practice regiment you've stuck to? I just put the metronome on and work my way up. Sometimes I set it to a tempo that's too fast and try to clean up my playing like Shawn Lane did.

    Brandon D'Eon Music I played constantly through a huge variety of different material from different genres and cultures. I toured, recorded and performed live in theatre pit bands and with various artists for decades. There was a genuine pressure to play well in session 30 years ago. It was that or go hungry or worse. The hardship made musicians good back then. I designed a pick and practice regime 30 years ago to see how far I could push myself. The idea was to be able to play any piece of music without major difficulty. I would always push past my comfort zone then fall back to a tempo where left and right was perfectly in sync. I didn’t practice the traditional way of slowly upping the tempo. Being dyslexic probably factors into things. I’m kind of hard wired differently.

    Hey Roy, awesome playing! I was wondering if there was a reason behind the positioning of your string dampener?

  • @LawofThree

    @LawofThree

    8 ай бұрын

    Cheers! It depends on the guitar neck. Usually 2nd or 3rd fret. Sometimes 5th depending what guitar I am using. I also prefer to forego right hand muting In favor of a sustained clean tone with an EQ treble boost into a limiter which brings out overtones if your not hand muting so I sometimes use two one on the 5th and one just behind on the 2nd. I also usually wrap over 5 strings but under the low E so things don’t fret out. I find wrapping over all strings isn’t effective on radius necks and it’s definitely not on a flat radius. The obvious option is do away with it and mute but I don’t like the sound so it’s one or the other.

    Sami Nurmesniemi Hey Sami. Way too many to mention mate. I’ve learnt a lot from many different cultures over the years and I still feel like I’m only scratching the surface! That said Art Tatum and Paco de Lucia were a massive influences and still are in many ways.

    @@LawofThree Ahh of course, understood sensei, my bad!! Damn I didn't realise the album was out. Man, I'd consider dropping an "Album Teaser" video, with a few clips from the tunes, and put in the title that the album is out, so we know to find it! Keen to hear it now!! Cheers mate, love your work as always.
