Shah Jahan, the Ruler of the World | 1627CE - 1658CE | Al Muqaddimah

The Empire of the Mughals had passed from the great Emperor Akbar to his son, Jahangir. Jahangir was a rather hands-off emperor and left governing in the hands of his beloved wife, Nur Jahan. However, he was followed by the emperor who is, probably, the most iconic of the Mughal Emperors. Shahanshah Shahab ud-Din Muhammad Shah Jahan, the King of the World.

Here's a question: What would a person gain from playing up these rivalries for nothing? Whether you agree or not, religion has always been a political ideology. It's literal purpose was to give a clear goal to the people and establishing a method to reaching a point. Why would there be rivalries when the two, supposed, posing rivalries were on common ground and were living in harmony? It's not like shah Jahan was a very Muslim man, as the video shows. Every time when religion was tarnished or belittled, it served a greater political purpose. Even Aurangzeb, who's infamous for oppressing the minorities, did so to earn the support of the Muslims by presenting with an 'us vs them' narrative.

He also tore down Gurudwaras in Lahore and a Church belonging to the Portuguese. If these were all political wouldn't he have done the same to Mosques of Muslim rulers he was fighting?

It is kinda sorta political mixed with religious sentiments because how do you hurt the Hindus or any other religious group who held power the most ? Just attack their religious locations, temples etc. He probably didn't tear down mosques because A) He would need those later anyway and B) No point losing popularity among his own subjects.

Shah Jahan’s order to demolish temples in Benaras stated, ‘It has been previously represented that there were some of the finest Hindu temples at Banaras. In former reigns, the foundations of many new ones had been laid, some of which had been completed, while others still remained in an imperfect state; and these the opulent among the pagans were desirous of seeing finished. The infidel-consuming monarch, who is the guardian of true religion, had therefore commanded that at Banaras and throughout the entire imperial dominions, wheresoever idol-temples had been recently built, they should be razed to the ground. Accordingly, in these days, it was reported from the province of Allahabad that 70 had been demolished at Banaras alone (The Shah Jahan Nama of Inayat Khan 1990: 89-90).’

*On Muslim rulers’ deliberate policy of causing crushing impoverishment of the peasants,* notes Fernand Braudel, ‘The levies Hindus had to pay were so crushing that one catastrophic harvest was enough to unleash famines and epidemics capable of killing a million people at a time. Appalling poverty was the constant counterpart of the conquerors’ opulence, including the splendor of palaces and feasts in Delhi.’ The situation got worse under the reign of Shahjahan (d. 1658) and Aurangzeb (d. 1707). The Muslim rulers ‘founded its luxury on India’s general poverty’ and India, under the Muslim rule, experienced ‘a series of famine, a fabulous death-rate…,’ adds Braudel. - _History of Civilizations_
