According to accepted history as opposed to what you've read & imbibed he was buried in Khuldabad in Maharashtra as opposed to his ancestors who were buried either in Delhi or Agra with the exception of Babur & Jehangir who like others in that list were either buried in their capitals - the seat of power (Kabul was one of the capitals of Babur as he'd just conquered Delhi & Lahore was the capital of the Western half of Jehangir's Empire ) . Do you know why ? It's because, he was busy waging the 27 yr old war against the Marathas in the Deccan & though he won many battles there, he lost the war & within 2 decades of his death the Marathas were in Delhi negotiating chauth for central India in what during Aurangzeb's time was part of the Mughal Empire but a territory he lost control over towards the end of his life & rule. Defeated 3 generations of Bhosales indeed while Chattrapati Shahu Maharaj had the last laugh deciding the fate of his descendants ruling over an ever shrinking Mughal Empire.

@@ic5442 I don't think it's aurangzebs fault that his sons were not worthy rulers. I don't get why u people blame aurangzeb for the fall of mughal empire he was the last worthy ruler and the reason he died in deccan is cause he shifted his court there so that its easier for him to fight and give orders to marathas. Simply put his sons were unworthy rulers who did not know how to rule the empire and they slowly lost to the very fierce bajirao peshwa I and that's how maratha empire came but it lasted 150 years and died.

Chhtrapati Rajaram defeated aurangzebs main army in Aurangabad on return from Jinji. After his death the Regent Queen, Maharani Tarabai was establishing her own government and collecting revenue from Aurangzebs terriotry as far north in Sironj (now in Madhya Pradesh) and in Gujrat also. Aurangzeb was very feeble in his attempts to subdue Maratha. Wrote Khafi Khan the contemporary mughal court historian of aurangzeb. Marathas rather wanted azeb to live more so that they could bleed him further. He wasnt successful in deccan in any manner whatsoever

Question is why Aurangzeb march large army against Deccan ? Because he knew if he don't maratha will annexed nearly all Deccan sultanate and become stronger. their next aim will be delhi. Aurangzeb's invasion delayed Maratha invasion of northern india.

Damn these rulers were ruthless, I could never face my brother in a combat let alone execute him, I'd rather let him take the throne

@Shivaditya Varman He didn't not destroyed temples bro, you will cry if you read about him, he was such a great emperor, about hindu conversion, if he wanted to, then he will never send a hindu king to fight with Shivaji in the deccan, he were not builded the Kamakhya devi temple of hindus, The hate on him is spraded by Europeans, as after his death they were able to conquer India, he lived in agra, if he wanted to destroy temples, Mathura is near agra, agra and mathura share same boundaries, why he didn't destroyed Krishna mandir, instead given gold to build it more Prosperous, in the same way, Akbar sent a thali of gold to veshno mata mandir, in past making a building was very hard and costly, so if you broke a building, it's like breaking the backbone of a kingdom, because kingdoms used buildings as a saviour way was well as attacking the other army, so you have to destroy buildings in the regions of your enemy.

Because he never included him in darbari politics fearing he is gonna do to him what he did to his own father. He was extremely paranoid. He made empire extremely centralized and held most of the power. He literally wrote a verse in Farsi which says until I am here everything is well after me everything is gone. He never let his son hold too much power. Never trained him in affairs. Aurangjeb single handedly destroyed his own empire.

​​​​​ I'm late but really thank you for all that. You can only understand history in its true form when coming from a neutral perspective. Aurangzeb created religious divisions in his era so severe that they couldn't be mended. Akbar is a good example in this regard. He knew, he needed more than muslims support for his rule to last. He made good relations with the Sikhs. Which Aurangzeb destroyed. So it was not like his successors were incapable but he dug a hole so deep that mughal empire was doomed no matter who ruled after. You covered the paranoia part, pretty well. So I won't expand on that.

I am so surprised there hasn't been a legit TV series comparable to Game of Thrones about this.

As an Indian Hindu Bengali, I have to admit he was a fascinating character and definitely the only ruler who was outright feared throughout the entire subcontinent. If his treatment of Hindus (jiziya tax, forced conversions, destruction of temples etc etc) was a bit better I would've looked up to him the way I look upto Akbar who was somewhat secular and tried to integrate Persian and Islamic influences with Hindu, Indian culture. Aurangzeb's empire was so vast, it was his duty to ensure the people stay united and respect the throne and not hate it. The seeds of hatred sown both by him and by Hindu rulers created religious differences which eventually ended up dividing the country, creating an entire country that sought to inherit this Islamic and Persian heritage (Aurangzeb's view of India), and one which accepts that we have to coexist (Akbar's view of India). I don't know who is right here, because both India and Pakistan have a high potential for religious extremism but the fact that our minorities are still somewhat okay (no thanks to BJP) probably means Akbar's vision was right.

Indian here - it wouldn't have mattered . In the sense that riots and conflicts are natural from time to time. Not just hindu muslim but even caste. Where the difference is more the conflict can be greater. It's just a part of being human. And where you don't have such issues you have issues of the left vs right, pro life vs pro choice, conservatives vs liberals , capitalism vs socialism vs communism vs fascism. The list goes on. To say that Aurangzeb sowed the seed of hatred is wrong. Hatred is in everyone of us. Hatred comes from within and not from outside. Its ones own responsibility to deal with ones issue rather than blame a man dead for over 300 years.

@@Aliha1d3r Lol, Even if they distort it which they are to hide their defeats, who is gonna believe their history even they know in their conscience it is rubbish, but may not admit it, anyways most countries have well preserved history of India written by some of the most renowned historians, such books are available in many libraries and data bases across the world, when compared they will appear like jokers , 200 plus countries have a different history about you which matches each other exactly but the one in India won't, it's pathetic.

People said that Aurangzeb's regime was bad and that if Dara Shikoh took the throne, the Mughal Empire will fell even faster. But what about Murad and Shah Shuja? What will their regimes be like if one of them took the Peacock Throne?

How would have the empire fallen if Dara ascended the throne?? It was Aurangzeb's oppressive policies that started rebellions in the south which eventually led to the empire's fall. 50 years after Alamgir's death the only territory the Mughals had was the city of Delhi itself. Contemplate.

@@harishankarpm3735 I heard some historians said that Dara Shikoh being disrespectful of the military generals is what going to make them revolt and declare themselves Nawabs. Plus, his ancestor, Ulugh Beg, is also an intellectual like him and his reign lasted only just two years. While in Aurangzeb's case, he simply rewarded his generals and being too nice to them, which led to them taking advantage of his generosity in the end. As for his oppressive policies, I think the truth lied somewhere in between because while he banned some Hindu festivals and completely banned music at the Durbar, he employed so many Hindus in his court. As for whole destroying Hindu Temples, they are political moves to punish the Hindu Rajas who rebelled against his overlordship over them. But for the execution of the Ninth Sikh Guru, that might be for both religious and polticial reasons, I think. This one I really do not know.

Do you think re introducing Jizya was a political move against Hindu Raja's as well?? Aurangzeb was a tyrannical bigot, he's was too busy releasing fatwas to know that harassing Hindus won't make his Empire last forever, why do you think those Rajas rebelled in the first place?? There was nothing political about Guru Teg Bahadur's murder, the Sikhs were popular but was a fringe minority at the time, the Sikh Gurus were looked upon and venerated by Hindus of the land, when Hindus of Kashmir were getting brutalised by Mughal governors many of them fled and came to the Guru, The Guru pleaded with Alamgir to end the persecution of Hindus, instead he was framed as an insurrectionist,a traitor of the Mughal Empire and whatnot and was executed publicly. Wanna know what that led to eventually?..........the formation of the Khalsa which would eventually lead to the formation of the Sikh Empire. Congrats the Shahenshah Alamgir Aurangzeb personally saw to formation of two great empires the Indian Sub continent has ever seen.

@@harishankarpm3735 I used to be like you. But then, I remembered that no man is perfect. And while it is true that I dislike Aurangzeb as much as you do, what I read about Dara Shikoh as a military commander is one of the many factors that are going to make his generals rebelled. Being insulted is one thing. But to impose the no-more-expansion policy and seeing him as a weak-minded intellectual who only like to hang out with the scholars are another matters. With these three factors combined, they can do something like seizing the Deccan, Bengal and Awadh without much resistance from the government. To be exact, I am just as much as confused as you are because some said that Dara Shikoh's reign will be great but some others said his reign will make things worse for India. So I guess I can say that while he is a great ruler when it comes to being a cultural and scholarly intellectual, he is definitely not a capable military commander. So in the end, it is depending on what can he do to keep the military loyal to him and his son, Suleiman.

Akhbarat i Darbar i Mualla , the chronicles of the Mughal imperial court, thus record temple destructions as ordered by the pre-eminent bigot Aurangzib. A few selected examples: 25 May 1679: ‘Khan-i-Jahan Bahadur returned from Jodhpur after demolishing its temples, and bringing with himself several cart-loads of idols. The Emperor ordered that the idols, which were mostly of gold, silver, brass, copper or stone and adorned with jewels, should be cast in the quadrangle of the Court and under the steps of the Jama Mosque for being trodden upon.’ January-February 1680: ‘The grand temple in front of the Maharana’s mansion (at Udaipur) - one of the wonderful buildings of the age, which had cost the infidels much money - was destroyed and its images broken.’ ‘On 24 January the Emperor went to view the lake Udaisagar and ordered all the three temples on its banks to be pulled down.’ ‘On 29 January Hasan Ali Khan reported that 172 other temples in the environs of Udaipur had been demolished.’ ‘On 22 February the Emperor went to look at Chitor, and by his order the 63 temples of the place were destroyed.’ 10 August 1680: ‘Abu Turab returned to Court and reported that he had pulled down 66 temples in Amber’. 2 August 1680: ‘Temple of Someshwar in western Mewar ordered to be destroyed.’ September 1687: ‘On the capture of Golkonda, the Emperor appointed Abdur Rahim Khan as Censor of the city of Haidarabad with orders to put down infidel practices and (heretical) innovations and destroy the temples and build mosques on their sites.’ Circa 1690: Instances of Aurangzeb’s temple destruction at Ellora, Trimbaakeshwar, Narsinghpur (foiled by snakes, scorpions and other poisonous insects), Pandharpur, Jejuri (foiled by the deity) and Yavat (Bhuleshwar) are given by K.N. _Akhbarat i Darbar i Mualla_ , the chronicles of the Mughal imperial court, thus record temple destructions as ordered by the pre-eminent bigot Aurangzib. A few selected examples: 25 May 1679: ‘Khan-i-Jahan Bahadur returned from Jodhpur after demolishing its temples, and bringing with himself several cart-loads of idols. @@draculemihawk4269 Well Shia-Sunni drift was one of a reason for Safavid-Ottoman rivalry but it wasn't a reason for Safavid-Mughal one, it started with competing to gain Qandahar and was confined to Qandahar. Humayun even got refuge in court of Tahmasp when Sher Shah outsed him from India, so the rivalry was mainly about Qandahar.

Nice episode you have created on Aurangzeb. You covered his story upto year 1659. Second half of his life till he died in year 1707 should also be covered, where he confronted with Maratha confederacy and Mughal-Maratha war of 27 years, the war which Aurangzeb lost to Marathas.

Fort St. George in Chennai was built by the British in the year 1640 AD during the young Aurangazeb's campaign in the south and well before the construction of Taj Mahal was completed (lot of precious stones embedded in the walls were scraped off during the British rule later). This means the British has established well themselves even during Shah Jehan, Aurangazeb's rule (the color scheme shows all the way down south upto the borders of river cauvery).

The British were really just restricted to a few ports and my understanding is that fort was nominally under The Nayaks of the Region . The Nayaks ( gingee nayaks ) would be conquered by Afzal Khan of Bijapur in 1649 , coming under nominal Mughal Authority. The Main European presence in the region were the Portuguese holding Goa and the Dutch having various allies in Kerala and controlling the Ceylonese Coast. There were also a number forts in Bengal as well , the Mughals never forced them out since they generated a large amount of money .

I was so waiting for this episode on Great Aurangzeb Alamgir and at the same time humble in personal life .I am witness to his grave like a commoner while his predecessors lie under grand domes. Really appreciate your unbiased approach toward him because in India most of them label him as the evil emperor.

My comment was removed from this post because I commented about how Chatrapati Shivaji Maharaj and the great Marathas challenged and destroyed the Mughal rule in India. The Marathas were very powerful and daring rulers of India and by 1737, they had planted their *Maratha Flag on Delhi* and were ruling all of India and this is a historical fact. It is not fair to delete my comments, just because You want to portray Aurangazeb as some sort of hero.

@@hinduismexposed2093 No, the Mauryan empire at its peak was bigger in territorial coverage. But it doesn't matter as overextension coupled with centralized control will spell doom for any great empire sooner or later.
