🎨Setting Up My ☀️Dusty Hazy Summer☀️ Watercolor Palette!🎨

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Hey everyone! Today's video is a chatty one (as always), where I share the colors I've decided to include in my curated palette for summer. The theme is Dusty Hazy (Crazy??) Summer :)
The goal of setting up these seasonal palettes is to try new colors in my collection and explore exciting color schemes and mixes. This is by no means my recommendation for a single versatile go to palette and there's not need for so many colors. Please don't feel like you have to go and buy anything I show, I hope it will serve you as inspiration and you can use what you already have.

I love what you said about choosing paints you love and not worrying about single pigment or transparency. I feel like I’m in a similar place in my journey. Questioning the watercolor purist knowledge that I clung to the first year or 2 and now wanting more opaque colors and mixing them with other colors. I love your videos and your honesty. 😍

Love the sentiment of choosing paints you love over what is "accepted" practice. All you have to do is look at artists like John Singer Sargent's watercolors to see there's nothing wrong with using opaque paint (white in his case).

Hi Irit! You have such a beautiful eye for color. I haven't tried many brands, so it is helpful to hear your experience of how different brands of the same color perform (and which you prefer and why.) Sometimes I have a hard time tracking which paint and corresponding swatch you are talking about though. Do you ever post pictures of your swatches with the brand & color labeled? Thanks for sharing!

Loved seeing this. I'm definitely into more opaque watercolors and gouache at the moment, too- I just finished putting together my M Graham Gouache palette and then I used the basic colors plus a bunch of white to mix 28 "custom" colors (mostly pastels) in another palette. I love the way they look. Just having the palette out on my desk makes me happy. There is an artist I follow online (Laura Horn) that regularly uses white acrylic ink to dilute her watercolors and they are beautiful. I always thought the white would dull the colors but it just brings them a sort of milky quality that looks dreamy, so I've been really letting myself enjoy opaque colors, lately. It's just something new to experiment with.

I like a lot milky colors like shell pink, flesh tint, etc.. Your emerald green from Sennelier seems milky too and very pale green. I love it, but mine is not this color. I don't know if yours is a pan, because mine is a tube and perhaps it's different. Or the computer colors are not the same than real? , but if I compare others colors, they seem to be more exact. I saw this difference in many of your videos so I had to ask you. Thank you for sharing it's a beautiful palette of colors, so summery !

Yes I just rediscovered shell pink in my stash and love it! My Sennlier Emerald is a tube, but I also had a pan first and they are the same color. I think the pans are a safer bet, as the tubes can have a lot of gooey binder... For the most part I think the colors are accurate, I don't enhance the saturation in editing, but I have found that some colors just don't translate well on screen. Mostly fluorescent colors and those on the turquoise and pinkish red areas of the color wheel. Thanks for watching and commenting, glad you enjoyed!

Hi, I’m going through similar changes. I have been using watercolor for many years and recently started using gouache. After seeing your palette I went and bought the Mijello palette and put gouache in the bigger wells and added my watercolor single half pans in the center. Didn’t realize that there was an actual palette I could buy. Love your softer Colors, I will be trying out my Naples yellow. Thank you for your videos. Inspiring. Suzi 🙋🏼‍♀️🌻🇨🇦

Irit Landgraf , yes, it does. There is a bit of a challenge with the gouache...it tends to crumble when dry and the little pieces mix with the watercolor wells, but not terribly. I take the clear palette and invert it and it keeps the crumbs from moving too much.

You should look into the Mijello White Class paints. They’re watercolor/gouache hybrid. But not exactly like shin Han pass. The colors are more like watercolor but when you put them in a palette, you put white with it so you can mix them with white as much or as little as you want.

I have a funny story Irit. I wanted to do your mix of Naples Yellow and Cobalt Violet. I didn’t have Cobalt Violet but had Wisteria, so I tried that but didn’t like it. So I just started adding colors of various brands until I finally got a shade I like. So it went like this...Naples yellow, Wisteria, Cad Orange, Mayan Orange, Shell Pink, Perylene Scarlet, and Opera Rose. I think I also had another deep Violet after the Wisteria. After all of that, I ended up with a lovely shade of deep salmon, which I couldn’t replicate in a million years.😂. I will use it, even though it is a mutt. I will name it Mutt. At least I didn’t get mud!😄. I scare me.

Hello from Tokyo! Thank you for another inspiring video as always. Your summer palette is so lovely. I was happy to see a Gekkoso paint. It is indeed a lovely colour. Just for your information, as I have pigment information of Gekkoso paints, their Coral Red is mixed with "PR258, PW6, PY74, PY3, PR101, PG7". 6 pigments. Gekkoso makes use of limited number of pigments to make all their colours but because of such limitation, they mix many pigments to create common colours. Even Prussian Blue is made with PR258 and PB15:3.

Listening to the first few minutes it sounds like you may want to start adding white to your watercolors... You know that tube of white that comes with every set of watercolors that none of us use LOL I have also recently felt the same after I discovered an opaque white in my new Susan scheewe watercolor set (which is amazing btw, set of 20 is on Amazon for $20. 11 are single pigment and most have good lightfast ratings). I am now also leaning towards more opaque and pastel colors. Also, I just bought the same exact palette from eBay it had been something I've been looking at for a couple weeks but hadn't seen any reviews so I finally pulled the trigger when I saw you with it. Thanks!

I kept watching and see you have your whites taken care of :) I've been wanting to try sennelier warm grey and I think I'll have to buy a tube finally. Also I prefer their neutral tint as it's none staining, activates easier and is much deeper to qors which is highly staining hard to activate and dull imo. I love the colors you choose thanks for the I inspiration:)

I know exactly what you mean about very pale colours with transparent watercolours if you dilute them a lot they have no sense of substance and its almost like a hole in the image rather than something material. But the opaque colours give you that substance you need. I do not think you should worry too much about gouache fading immensely, there are artists and designers version the artists is more light fast but work I did forty years ago has not changed a bit and we have the option of framing under glass that will prevent light damage. I know of only two colours that a genuinely and majorly fugitive, opera rose and aureolin. The latter can grey not just with light but with time. So long as you are using artists type colours and not non toxic childrens paints you should be fine. The latter are mainly dye based plus a white base and fade very rapidly. There are a few older colours that are fugitive but mostly you won't see them these days. Btw I love the palette itself, it just looks so versatile.
