Hey everyone! Today's video is about some cheaper "dupes" to some of my favorite Daniel Smith shades.
A few clarifications:
I love Daniel Smith's watercolors and use them everyday. Their color range is unparalleled, they are vegan and perform beautifully. However, being in Europe, they are probably the most expensive brand for me and so, I try to find cheaper and more local alternatives.
For most standard shades that most brands carry in their range it's not a problem, but Daniel Smith has many unique shades. Some I have not been able to dupe, but others have some good alternatives out there.
The prices I mention are what I found, at the time of filming.
Make sure you shop around for the best deal in your part of the world.
The dupes shown here are not identical.
Not in formula, not in performance and may not be easily available in some parts of the world. In my opinion they are a good option.
Please do your own research and decide for yourself if they can work for you.

    I totally agree on the new palette. The plastic one is good if one has a lot of space, wants a lot of mixing space, and only uses white nights paints. The metal palette has only one area of mixing, but it's so much more convenient, compact and versatile!

    I love van gogh paints. I wish I knew about them before I bought my cotman palette. I just think they behave so much nicer and the pigment payout is better. I had to really work to get vibrant colours. As a result I often mix my colours too bright now when using other paints. More practice required 😂

    Totally agree. I think Van Gogh are superior to Cotman, I enjoy them as much as I enjoy my artist grade paints. Also they are very intense and need a controlled hand...

    I am watching this in 2023 and I think Van Gogh is the best student grade paints out there. I live in Canada and Daniel Smith is cheaper at Jackson’s than any store here. I find that strange since I am in Vancouver and Daniel Smith is in Seattle go figure.

    These comparisons are helpful, and the comments are awesome--I get a lot of tips from viewers, too! I bought the Van Gogh Lavender, and can confirm that it's very different from the Daniel Smith version which I use for stormy and sunset skies. It's much less granulating and doesn't separate into pinks, lavenders and greys like the DS version. But it's still a useful color and I'm sure I'll use it for skies when I want a different look, as an opaque accent, for florals and maybe muting shadows. Adding in a bit of PR259 or Potter's Pink might make it work for sunrises/sunsets. I think it reminds me more of my M Graham colors than my DS colors, i.e. I use the M Graham Cerulean when I don't want granulation but the DS or Winsor & Newton Pro to add texture. I can see how VG would be a very affordable paint to buy for beginners especially now that it's more widely available here in the US.

Wondering if, in future videos, you might also add the pigment numbers for each tube or color? That helps me to make a decision on my choices, as I prefer to avoid too many multi-pigment colors. thanks for this. lunar black ds and aquarius black both use bk11. so i wonder did you find both paints as densely pigmented... as this would determine whether the aquarius is indeed much better value for money. in any case with your bk11 + phthalo blue b15, you can mix any number of lunar blue variations! and so have more flexibility than just the one mix that ds provide.

    Glad you enjoyed it! I wouldn't recommend Van Gogh as a dupe as it's not a cobalt that has similar performance to the mineral based paints. I would go with a cobalt turquoise or green turquoise (name changes with brand), even Daniel Smith's version is almost identical to Sleeping Beauty.

    I completely switched from my beloved Schmincke Horadam to white nights and don't regret it. I bought two colors of Daniel smith paints (Moonglow and Perlyenne Green) but hardly ever use them since I don't like them as much. I think here in Europe Schmincke and White Nights are the better alternatives.

  • @iritlandgraf

    @iritlandgraf

    4 жыл бұрын

    I agree to a degree ;) Financially, no doubt. However DS has some unique shades that Schmincke and White Nights don't have, and also DS is vegan. I currently use a lot of Van Gogh (which I know are marketed in some countries as student grade), they perform wonderfully, as well as a few that I've tried from their big sister brand Rembrandt. Those are currently my go to more local , very affordable and vegan paints (Lukas is another option on my radar in the future!). Thanks for commenting!

    interesting review. the issue is a lot of people like myself want to use the genuine colour as it is natural, we dont want to use a cobalt colour because of the toxins. But if it fades then unless we are only using in a art book away from sunlight its not worth it. What we need is a non toxic alternative to Sleeping Beauty.

    Thanks for showing us some great substitutions, and I can't wait to try your class!! I thought a half pan is approx 1.5ml and a full pan is approx 3.0ml?? I'll have to measure myself to figure out. Unless the Roman Smalz Aquarius pans are bigger, I think you said 6.5ml (unless I misunderstood). Anyway, I think the tubes are usually cheaper overall and last much longer--plus you can mix your own convenience mixes with some colors, which is fun. I like most of your substitute colors, except I think the DS Lavender has a lovely grey undertone and the DS Lunar Black is such a perfect neutral color. The Roman Smalz Aquarius line seems to have many close similarities to the Daniel Smith paints although some colors are closer to the Schmincke paints, so I'm looking forward to trying them. Aquarius Green seems to be very similar to Daniel Smith's Undersea Green.

  • @iritlandgraf

    @iritlandgraf

    4 жыл бұрын

    I mentioned several times in past videos, and I think also in this one, within a brand, tubes are the most economical option (well with DS there are their sticks). However, if one has a budget of say 20$, one could get between 4-10 half pans or 1-2 tubes... So depending how fast you use up your paints, some might prefer to have more options are try more paints. If you google how many ml in half/full pan you will get several answers. It varies. Depends on the pan. Also, dried paint in pans is more concentrated. Schmincke for example, use the same formula for their tube and pan paints. They do 3 pours to fill their pans. So you're actually getting more pigment per ml in their pans then in their tubes. On the mixing part- absolutely. If one like to create interesting mixtures in larger quantaties, tubes are the way to go. The Roman Szmal paints are lovely. Some are a little bit weak, but I can say the same about DS. Glad you enjoyed!

    Since I mostly still use my Pelikan box (there's transparent colours manufactured by them) and the Van Gogh boxes I never had to worry about getting my hands on them, they are easily available at the Idee stores here in Germany. Whatever else I want, I'd usually buy via Amazon, which is probably not the cheapest place to buy from, but tried and tried and safe for me... I also haven't bought any palettes ever even though those metal and emaille ones are really beautiful. I'm just that much of a cheap shit 😂 What I ordered though were a whole box of Koh-I-Noor Progresso Aquarelle pencils (I really liked the idea that I could sharpen those with less waste since those are woodless, just a barrel full of pressed pigment with a bit of lacquer to protect it from breaking) and since I'm planning on sewing a pencil case for all my watercolour pencils, I got an empty metal case to fill as a palette. So I just bought empty no-name half pans and stuck them to that tin box with magnetic tape that I had lying around and plan on just filling them with the shavings from the pencils. They re-wet nicely so I guess they'll do well in there, too. I'm also planning on toying around with those and a tube of oxide black (which seems to be the same pigment as that lunar black...) to make some dusk colours. I'm really curious if that works, but hey, if it works, it works - if not, I'll at least learned something new ;P

But the colours are soooooo expensive. and after I once got one of those genuine colours and was so disapointed. and I didn't see the price before paying. also the shade was not like on the dot card (have been told, that this sometimes is so with a few of DS colours). so I am so pissed off, that I wont buy them anymore. but they are available. and also just resently, there was a -20% incentive in their online-shop (which is in Germany)

    Dupes need to feel like they work for the user so that the user doesn’t need to buy the original and is happy with their dupe. That’s a proper dupe to me! For me I use lots of watercolour and only get tubes. Because I make my own dupes I also require tubes to make dupes. I also encourage everyone to pre mix their own half/full pans of custom mixes. Not just dupes but more unique colours you discovered on your own! I have dupes for colours I haven;t seen in person and am guessing but the dupe makes me happy so I save money. I advise researching pigments and going with your local best quality/prices. Invest in the largest tubes of the most useful colours for mixing custom colours with! Look at the pigment info and do experiments. Sometimes look up a specific dupe on KZread. I also mixed more lightfast versions. Such as my moon glow dupe uses only more lightfast colours. I used Daniel smith Cobalt teal blue in the mix as well so that helped it be closer. Know one owns a colour. I’m in Canada and it’s easier and cheaper for me to directly purchase (the Lower -mid DS) paints than the European brands. Except Van Gogh those are amazing and I personally consider them full art grade! For Van Gogh let them dry a few days before using as they are odd right for the tube but great rewet from dry. Where I give M.graham, Van Gogh and sometimes even Daniel Smith are my best options. Even still when I do invest in Daniel smith I go by what is more unique and best for making my own custom mixes (dupes and my own). Plus the Sennilier starter box I got that for $20 CAD best deal ever! Anyways goby where you are in the world your needs and budget. Collect in priority order (and based on what’s not sold out), research the most useful by pigment and over time build up a collection. Think about potential dupes and mixes to help your decisions. Lightfastness is also a consideration. I still use non lightfast but I KNOW when I am. Dupes for me is primarily mixes. Have fun everyone.

    Honestly, when I first started watercolors I was confronted with DS on the internet and thought it was a great brand. I got a few Duochromes because I'd never seen paints like that. But now I'm somewhat underwhelmed by them. Yes they do have nice paints, but they are so damned expensive. I'd rather buy Coliro paints, they might not be as economical because they don't come in tubes. But they are cheaper and much more vibrant. My last investment in DS was a swatch card so I can replicate colors I like for a lot cheaper. My biggest tipp on saving money is to look at pigment info. Example, Lavender in van Gogh and Renbrandt have the exact same pigments. Why would I pay more for Rembrandt if it has the same ingredients as van Gogh?

  • @iritlandgraf

    I feel the same about everything you wrote. One thing tho worth mentioning, I think you're right with that particular example of lavender, but sometime it's not the same pigment (dusk pink for example), or it's the same pigment but it can theoretically contain higher percentage of said pigment than Van Gogh. But yes, colors like lavender that have white in them are sometimes not worth the price tag of premium priced artist grade paints if there's a cheaper alternative.
