    Yeah. I am getting so tired of all the negativity lately. Everyone learned all the wrong lessons from AVGN. Even some skilled KZreadrs I like I don't watch much because he said "anytime I do a video talking about a game I like it doesn't do good." People just want negativity and it's been on a slow rise since social media took off in 2007. If you like PS1 games check out the channel Sean Seanson, especially his obscure Japanese games series (it helps to find some good games we never got). Even when reviewing a bad game he still has plenty of positives to say and doesn't get bogged down on just being overly negative. Really glad I have found his channel, he makes really good vids.

    I honestly think there's a lot of meat to be had in the VBT Truck demo... I always thought the Saturn could've had a really graphically impressive 3D racer if the vehicle was 2D and the track was a VDP2 infinite plane with the polygons (sorry, quadrangles.) reserved for track geometry on top... Like a pseudo-3D F-Zero/Wipeout/Outrun.

    I don't think homebrew on the Saturn will ever die. Because the more simplified modern computers and programming gets in general, the more impressive homebrew on older and more complex consoles like the Saturn gets. Any developers who wish to prove themselves will take on the daunting task.

    The Cube Cat demo really shows the difference in power the N64 has. Kaze's new Mario mod looks like a whole generation ahead, despite Cube Cat being pretty advanced for a Saturn game.

  • @Peachblink

    To be absolutely fair, Kaze's work at least had groundwork within the Mario 64 engine (even if he rewrote huge chunks of it, having *something* to work with is better than having *nothing* to work with).

    It took a while before the Saturn was easy to emulate, much less anyone understanding how to push it. If memory serves, the highest poly count in a commercially released game was over 2k. If just 1k is the present state of the art in homebrew? I'm not sure how to evaluate the challenges ahead.

  • @protocetid

    CubeCat is really coming onto its own, I wish they’d make the cat’s face less flat. Give it sprite ears and use the polygons to give it a 3D muzzle. Slide Hop could be turned into a serious skateboarding or 3D platforming game that the author could sell, or is it just going to be a small project? Someone probably already said this, but the 3D section of Sonic Jam is a bonus created from salvaged Sonic Adventure Saturn builds. The game spent a while on the Saturn before being moved to DC. Speaking of SA on Saturn, am25 you tease! A SA demake is one of the things I want to see most on this console.

    Another question. Have you ever thought about interviewing game devs for these Saturn games on a frequent basis years before you’ll get to doing the actual review (That way you could have the insight of the devs years before you’re able to get to the actual reviews/documentaries and not have to worry about most of them being gone by the time you do get to making the review/documentary)

    I mean, you were lucky to have the resources of that guy who wrote the NBA Jam book that one time, which was made just before one of the people involved passed away, but I’m not sure if that’s something that could be relied upon years ahead (especially for the more obscure titles with little to no documented histories and developments)

    I was wondering about Cinepak being an option for non VCD owners out there but from what I've tested on VirtualDub a long time ago, 2.4mbps or 300KB/s according Saturn hardware only looks tolerable with an obvious lower framerate than the source material. 300KB/s only allows about 38 minutes and 54 seconds MAX. And unlike Mpeg, Cinepak is CBR only so imagine attempting to fit 2 episodes of a cartoon in that. Seems a bit ridiculous to burn AVI Cinepaks to CD-Rs unless you plan on overburning... Though I'm sure the Satiator and Saroo would take care of it.

    There are no clues for Sega Saturn Doom.. the British programmer who was tasked with handling the reprogrammed conversion of Doom to the Sega Saturn was required to turn in work in progress code to Id Software... the culprit? very simple, John Romero was on vacation and a certain John Carmack guy got his hands on the work in progress Sega Saturn Doom and then he, aka Carmack himself back then basically said to "NOT use the discrete (custom) hardware of the Sega Saturn, then changed it to some lame excuse about fearing that the Sega Saturn hardware rendering method would ruin the "look" of the Doom game... this was obviously AFTER the Sony PlayStation Doom conversion which was handled by a different programmer was fully allowed to utilize the custom hardware in Sony PS1. A side note... PC Doom, like many if not most PC games of the 80s and 90s, ran off the PC CPU which also handled all the 3d space calculations, aka no Id Software game and almost no PC 3d game ever actually used any discrete 3d hardware outside of the main CPU in any game until many months after the first 3d accelerators were released and then Microsoft released Direct X (while other devs noticed that monopolistic tactic and went to use OpenGL instead) to basically kill off any custom 3d coding on PC graphic cards. Thus the first officially programmed for 3d graphic cards Id Software game was Quake III in the year 1999... that is like FIVE years after the Sega Saturn and Sony PlayStation launched. The Sega Saturn (believe it or not) actually contained custom 3d processors that had limitations of the year of which they were engineered but nevertheless the Sega Saturn was fully capable of handling and enhancing the original PC game, if only the game programmer was experienced enough and also put in the effort especially if they preferred assembly coding. As such that lead programmer was told to only use the Sega Saturn "CPU" to render the game and also told to do it by a certain date which was beyond his control because he was hired to do the reprogrammed conversion or it was not his game, it was Id Software's game and had John Romero somehow intercepted the work in progress game, the history would have been very, very different. So we have the Atari Jaguar rush job, noting that Atari Jaguar had custom graphics chipset capable of 3d to satisfy something like Doom (which PC did not have in 1993 despite the usual PC masterrace elititsts) Then we have 3DO Doom which was a horrible rush job that does not make sense because again, the 3DO actually has faster computational power than the Atari Jaguar but that particular programmer was verified to have been told to do a rush job in a short time... Then we have Sony PlayStation Doom in 1996... apparently Mr Romero saw the work in progress and said "go!" Then we had Nintendo 64 Doom 64 which again uses the custom processors of N64... thank you Mr Romero Then Sega Saturn Doom... now you know and knowing is half the battle, plus Duke Nukem can debunk any rendering insecurities there, I do understand that youtubers fear being lashed out by the original game devs even if the game devs were either completely wrong or were experiencing some type of "I am gonna be a miserable c0nt today" attitude that they later forgot all about but cost the career of a conversion programmer back then when it was not that simple to just get hired by the big leagues as you had to prove yourself and even if you did prove yourself as a hardcore programmer (Lobotomy Soft) you still had to deal with the arrogant 90s staff at Sega of America who were gonna make sure they did not do their part with marketing, PR and localization efforts to help raise the install base and maintain the fanbase of the Sega brand.

  • @apollosungod2819

    @apollosungod2819

    Also in order to "fix" Sega Saturn Doom, it's going to take more than "patches", the British programmer was forced, at no fault of his to write code mainly using the Saturn CPU in a very short time, basically he was also forced to discard his work in progress because he was using the custom hardware even if he does not admit it as the story changes and John Carmack has said things years and years ago (when Saturn was considered a trash fail by the general public who were not there) that some of us.. or maybe a few of us remember because unfortunately there is a lot of polishing of egos going around. Basically the fan dev should actually attempt to go fully into the Sega Saturn hardware and render their engine from scratch instead of relying on the the incomplete retail version... that way the fan dev or devs can much more easily utilize the VDP 1, VDP2, SCU DSP and DUAL SH2s as well as use the 4MB RAM Cartridge and Saturn sound system chipset so that they can match or slightly surpass the PC Doom games of the 90s which were never designed for 60fps anyway and either hit 30fps or try and reach for 60fps which the Saturn can easily do for that type of game which isn't even a fully 3d polygon game anyway.
