Secret Societies in Tiki Bars [Mai Kai Big Bamboo]
Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль
In tiki bars across the country, there are secret societies and clubs that you almost never hear about. Clubs where you earn your membership with the loyalty that you show to the bar...
Okay, this may be a bit hyperbolic and a sensationalist way to explain a 'loyalty program', but it's more fun this way, so get off me.
Here's the cocktail that you received in the 1960's from the Mai Kai after you became a member of the Okole Maluna Society.
To make the the drink in the video you will need:
--------------------------------------
1/2 oz fresh lime juice
1/2 oz fresh orange juice
1/2 oz fresh white grapefruit juice
1/2 oz passion fruit syrup
1/2 oz dark Jamaican rum
1oz gold Cuban rum
2 dashes Angostura bitters
4 oz crushed ice
--------------------------------------
Put everything in a blender or spindle mixer and blend at high speed for exactly 5 seconds. Pour into a bamboo mug or tall glass.
Garnish with a mint sprig.
--------------------------------------
Spike's Breezeway Cocktail Hour tiki mug is available in a limited edition of 300 and at the posting of this video, 1/2 of them are already sold out. The mug was loosely modeled after the Leroy Schmaltz-carved tiki (Oceanic Arts) that flanks the left side of the Breezeway bar. This will sell out and once they're gone, they're gone for good. That black velvet portrait is on the way! Soon enough. Great video, my friend!!
A black velvet painting of yourself next to a giant cork.
Wife and I have completed our passports for Ventiki, a great tiki bar in Ventura.
Great episode, as always. I remember making this drink and thinking "that's it?!" as well when I got the bottom. I've made it a double everytime since then.
I can't wait to return to the Mai Kai
Great video! My husband and I just earned admiral status (200 runs) in the Kill Devil Explorer's Club at Laka Lono Rum Club in Omaha, Nebraska.
The rum lists that I’ve completed are Kon-Tiki Expedition (Oakland), Kill-Devil Club at Forbidden Island, Guardian of the Cove at Smuggler’s Cove

Love learning about the history of Tiki bars. Great drink too!!
Thanks for the video and the bonus view of the inside of the Breezeway!
Great video Spike! Fun info on the secret societies of tiki.
Oh man, I can't even hear the phrase BIG BAM BOO without putting it into the 3 by three square like the sign of my favorite sadly defunct tiki bar out in Kansas. Anyways, that is a tasty looking cockktail. Always love the classic Mai Kai juice blend. Would love to visit the Mai Kai in the near future.
Great episode, Spike! I've read both those books, but somehow missed knowing about the Mai Kai drink club. If you ever need a quiet tiki bar to film an episode, you're always welcome to come back to my place.
Glassware link broken....thanks for another cool video to watch.
The Motorcycles by my place have the stereo~!!!
Nice drink...I ended up being out of oranges after my first so on my the second I subbed pineapple. I actually prefer the pineapple to the orange.
Thanks for another episode, Spike!
I totally dig the bamboo straw and bamboo mug. wonderful episode.
There is really only one modern day "Tiki Secret Society". Its existence since the early 2000's has been a mystery, but its infuence in making this world a better place can not be debated. But its secret, so we don't talk about it 🍹😏👍🏻
Love your channel dude. Don’t sleep on the song “Big Bamboo” by Horace Peterkin. 🤙🏻🤙🏻🤙🏻
'That's it'...lol...that dreaded sound...
Thankz Spike...
Great episode. Thanks for the hard work. Are you out of Cuban rum.
I've made this one, it's a great drink!
Awesome episode! Love the mug too. Are they available anywhere?
Some really entertaining info ion this vid
I've attempted the Order of the Drooling Bastard once. Thought I could go have a drink after work once a week, but I couldn't keep up the schedule or the financial drain, so I gave up. Someday I'd like to try again. Although maybe my local, the Bamboo Club, will have a society someday.
An hour away huh? I’m 3600 miles from North Hollywood.
I joined a secret society once but they wouldn't tell me the name or where they met.
I've been meaning to ask about the straws: How fragile are they, being glass?
After the book was published I got to look through all of Mariano's recipe books and there was a cocktail called the Okole Maluna. It remains unpublished. The actual drink for the club members...
Never to much bamboo
Hello! Hey! E-1 Errol says hi!!
I wish I could be in a secret society. But there’s no tiki place close enough for me to drink then stumble home.
Okole maluna!
You should have edited out the whole motorcycle noise part.
Yep I belong to a Secret Society but I can’t tell you about it, otherwise it wouldn’t be a secret.
I'm a member of the Turtle club. You ask: Are you a turtle? Reply you bet your sweet ass I am. Then he buys the drink.
