Secret Floating shelf

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

I made a secret compartment shelf using ambrosia maple and stain grade crown molding. When the shelf is opened, it reveals a secret compartment inside.
The hinges used are frameless surface mount spring hinges
amzn.to/2sVlGmm
The locks used are child safety magnetic cabinet locks
amzn.to/2t52XE8
I used high density polyurethane foam but here is a link to a great alternative. it is a product from fast cap.com
www.fastcap.com/estore/pc/view...
I found the crown molding at lowes. 3/4 by 3 by 8ft and I paid $20

I have a question which evolved from thinking through the designs to suit my needs: With the spring hinges, can the hidden panel be placed on the top side rise open when unlocked, verses simply dropping down? (If not, could you recommend a solution to allow the panel to rise open on the hinges from the topside?)

+David Moss thanks David, cutting crown molding can be a bit tricky. I would start with checking the alignment of your saw, even a half degree out of square can create large gaps. Also there are good youtube videos on how to cut crown molding. This should help you, if you decide to give it a second shot.

Do the magnet locks give the shelf the push-to-open feature after unlocking it? Or is that something else? I really like that feature and want it on the shelf I'm building but can't find an answer.

Hey josue.. the one I used I found at lowes and it was 3/4 by 3 ..that's what the label said.. as long as the bevel is close to 3/4 (the thickness of the bottom)it will work..keep in mind, if you go with the the 3 3/4 wide molding the dimentions of the support assembly will change.. it's okay.. just assemble the top and bottom first and measure the area between.. then subtract 1/8 on an inch.. hope this helps..if not email me moypz88@yahoo.com

the thing that irritates me the most is the crown moulding. I made my top part and got the crown molding, but can't figure out the angle at what I need to cut the moulding so I can make my bottom part

  • @moyperezwoodshop1722

    @moyperezwoodshop1722

    8 жыл бұрын

+wylecoyote082 the angle is 45 degrees. Cutting crown molding can be tricky if you have never done it before. The best way to explain it is : when you are standing in front of the mitersaw, the molding should be upside down. Make sure the bottom molding bevel is against the back fence and the top bevel on the bottom fence. Then make your cut at 45 degrees. There are some good videos on youtube on cutting crown molding. Hope this helps

Not really a project for an 'average' person anyway; more of a project for an intermediate to advanced maker or a relatively talented apprentice woodworker. Great job detailing this build including the challenges and ways to get around them.

The Irony: Showing all the *_home invaders & robbers_* exactly where to find your _now_ not so secret hidden compartment. Putting this on KZread for the World to see?? Does this not defeat it's whole aim of no one knowing where your stuff is? Why would you do that?
