Another Floating Shelf (Heavy Duty)
Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль
I made another floating shelf. This one is heavy duty, made to hold an antique cabinet. It's made out of reclaimed oak and hung on a french cleat. The design is based around a piece of crown molding I had in my shop.
You can see my earlier light duty floating shelf at • Building a "Floating" ...

I need to build a fireplace mantle that will look something like that. Thanks for the ideas!
Love all the little techniques you use. I never saw the blue tape tear out prevention before. Thanks
I love my shelf! Thank you SO much Dave! My cabinet looks great hanging in my sewing room!
Absolutely beautiful ! I am going to attempt one of these for my bathroom ! Great inspiration
Great idea for a fireplace mantel, nice instruction.

I can sympathize with having "design modifications" when building....i like your improvisations. Final product came out real nice.
beautiful piece, I like the fact that you left in the mistake you made just for the video, you fixed your mistake, we all make them

Thanks, Bob. I don't think I have ever made something that didn't involve a fix, a course correction or just learning to live with a mistake. Just part of making.

Admitting a slight booboo and still making it work and still beautiful is the mark of a craftsman. I have been woodworking for 40 yrs and still, on every one of your vids, pick up at least one thing, one thought, that makes me just a little bit better. Many thanks for that! If we could only revive Michealangelo for 10 minutes. Only he could show us all the miss-measurements and faux-paus and fixes he had to make on his sisteen chapel painting. I'm not very KZreads savvy, Dave, but thanks for being a real craftsman. It's important because there are so many young people(like me) that want to dream, think, build..The MOST important thing for everyone to know is working with wood means letting yourself screw up.
This is advanced carpentry!!
Love your push block :-) also - nice job!

Good video, I think it’s great that you make a mistake, admit it, create a workaround and finish the project. It turned out fantastic Great job and video!

Отличная работа!
Great job. I was going to make a couple simpler versions of this but now I make them more elaborate. I have subscribed and I look forward to more videos. By the way, I like your push stick.

Que tipo de tinte utilizaste para el mueble?

I used dark brown Transtint dye at first but it wasn't dark enough for me. So I used steel wool dissolved in vinegar to darken it more. This is a chemical reaction that only works with oak or woods with a lot of tannin.
Hi, that's just pure craftsmanship. You could have simply made a plain shelf for your wife's antique but instead you went above and beyond. It turned out beautifully, well done. I noticed hanging on the wall behind you the two large buttons and the larger one on top of the antique cabinet, did you make those also? They gave me an idea, *warning* my ideas aren't always good ones ;^), anyhow, if your wife thinks she'd like it, maybe you could also make her a sewing needle or a set of pins, somehow joined together, with different colored heads, all made out of wood to match the buttons. Don't shoot me, just an idea. :-) Thanks for sharing with us.

Thanks! I did make the buttons (there's a video). The pin idea is a good one, but she has enough ideas of her own. No need to add anymore. :)
