Project Inspired By: A video I saw floating around Facebook last year: • Fort Knox Concealment ...
Project History & More Info:
I saw an awesome concept for a concealment shelf floating around Facebook last year ( • Fort Knox Concealment ... ) and thought it was great! Until I looked at the price.
I wondered if I could build something similar myself and save some money.
It took 1 full week of prototyping, and I pulled more inspiration from a website called Tactical Walls (tacticalwalls.com) and came up with my own version that looks great, works awesome, and gives peace of mind when something important needs to be hidden.
My shelf uses magnetic locks to keep it closed, and as easy as it seems to open, for anyone who doesn't understand how it works, it's deceptively difficult to open, even for adults.

most houses have studs of wood 2x4s that run vertically every 16 inches from center to center sometimes every 24 inches. you can tap on your wall and hear when the sound changes from a hollow sound to a nice tapping sound to find the studs then mark or measure them where you want your shelf and screw through the back peice of wood he has on the inside of the shelf into the studs of your wall. You can also buy a $10 stud finder at the hardware store that will shine a light and beeb when it finds the edge of a stud. it's a good idea to drive a screw or nail into your wall to double check the stud is where you think it is before you permanently mount anything. this does make holes so be careful.

There's a little triangle on the angle around 32 degrees that your miter saw should automatically lock in and on the bevel there's also a triangle around the 35 degrees. If you lay your crown down on the table flat these two triangles make a perfect 90 degree angle. Much simpler and less room for error than this tape and marking technique of yours. Once you try it out I bet you're going to love it

Yes they are illegal. It's fine to have them, but illegal to sell them. It has to do with the small toys. Somehow american kids were eating the toys while kids in every other country were fine. Maybe it's down to parenting? Either way we can't enjoy them unless you're lucky and have easy(ish) access to foreign countries like relatives who can bring them over perfectly fine.
