    Hi MBA Crystal Ball Team, Thanks for the informative video. Really appreciate the transparency. I have completed my first MBA in Marketing from SIBM Pune in 2018 and have about 6 years of experience in healthcare analytics and consulting. I'm contemplating a second MBA primarily for the below reasons: 1. Prestige (having an Ivy/M7/T15 brand on resume) 2. I've liked working in the US healthcare industry and have a preference to continue in this industry post 2nd MBA to leverage my experience. However, I'm more open to considering switching function from analytics to strategy/consulting or even industry roles like Marketing/Brand Management. 3. Currently given the healthcare analytics experience of 6+ years, career mobility is a little difficult. So having a great B-School on CV might help achieve that. 4. Plan to work for 6+ years at least in US (for exposure and financial growth). I wanted to check given the enormous debt and uncertain economy, would it be a wise decision to go for a second MBA? and whether the above objectives are clear enough reasons to justify that decision? Or maybe I should try figuring out ways to achieve the above listed career goals without going for the second MBA. Really appreciate team's response on the same. Would be happy to connect 1:1 if that's convenient. Best, Dipesh

    MiM programs are better suited than MBA for applicants with under 2 years experience. A better idea is to be patient and work on the profile for a year or two more, and then apply to the good MBA programs.

    I have 2 years to go before I apply and I want to get my GMAT out of the way. Since I have a lot time in my hands, I'm planning to start my GMAT prep from May'22 onwards and take the test in Dec'22 or Jan'22. This would leave me with a year's time to focus on other aspects of the application before I hit submit at the start of 2024. Full disclosure: Not a great test taker. What would you think of this rough timeline? Would love to hear your inputs.

    Hello Sameer, IIM Calcutta MBAEx vs MSU Broad (90% scholarship), which one does it make sense to choose? Pros for MSU Broad 1. 2 year US degree 2. International experience 3. Capital investment almost same Cons: 1. H1B Pros for IIM C 1. one year course 2. less opportunity cost Cons for IIM C 1. Fees 2. Not sure about roles, one year mba programs have heavy concentration of IT consulting roles. 3. long lead time for ROI Your thoughts?

    As a general rule, we'd have recommended an international MBA over a domestic one. We have a detailed video (MBA in India vs Abroad) on why we say that. Check it out. But in your case, it's a little more tricky. Not just for the reasons you've listed (btw, we'd consider 2-yr as a con for mature applicants, as you'd be an outlier for class stats). But also the fact that there isn't a third option that may have been a better fit for your experience and provided a global degree. Ideally, a 1-year European MBA would've been a great addition to your application portfolio. Any reason you skipped that? What GMAT score did you apply with? What's your post MBA goal?

    @@MBACrystalBall 1. My GMAT score is 680. I have 10 years of experience in Product design & development. I want to move now into Tech companies in a product manager role. 2. My aim is to complete an MBA with minimum debt, so I chose MSU since they are known for generous scholarships and to add to it they have had higher percentage of tech companies recruiting the students over the past couple of years. 3. Did not think of Europe since Europe has too many barriers with regards to language, work permit and is a bit conservative as opposed to US. Most people whom I have spoken to have returned to India post their MBA with a education debt which I am not in favour of. Even though I work for a year in US I would be able to repay most of debt and come back to India at 0-0 score with a masters degree. 4. I consider 2 years as pros because if I want to move into academic roles a decade later this will be considered as a regular masters instead of a one year course. 5. With IIM C the biggest worry is the kind of roles as well as the time to repay. It will almost take 7 years for me to repay as good as a home loan. 6. Ofcourse education vs money isnt a good comparison but given my priority of debt free education, I am inclined to MSU. What are your thoughts on this?

    Good to know those additional insights. Since RoI is important to you, make sure you're not just focussing on the fee, but also on the other expenses such as cost of living and more importantly the opportunity cost, which for someone with 10 yrs experience is a significant amount. If you're convinced about those, then we'd pick the US option over IIM. Though this may not be relevant now, considering it's water under the bridge - but with your GMAT score and experience, UK would offer some decent options from a fit as well as RoI angle. And there's the post study student visa attraction from this year. Could've made a good addition to your application portfolio.

    @@MBACrystalBall Thanks Sameer. I agree the UK option to be good and had crossed my mind but as you pointed out the water had passed under the bridge by then. Nevertheless thanks for your valuable suggestions. Those were some great insights. I did consider the living expenses and the opportunity cost in consideration and overall it is kind of 50-50. Just for that international favour, MSU wins in a photo finish. Thanks again for your quick and valuable responses. I wish you and your team all the very best!

    Our view is that if you select the right MBA program and the right electives, you shouldn't feel the need for any additional courses to get the right break. If a short term course can get you that same break, then an MBA wouldn't be needed. Choose the path that works the best, rather than relying on multiple courses.

    Hi Sir, would you say that an MBA degree from only the top 10 European schools (considering the region of Europe alone) would provide good RoI and employability post-graduation? It's not easy to find a good job, one that pays well and also has meaningful work, in a foreign job market, so I'm very anxious about how things would look if I were to go for an MBA that doesn't fall within the top 10 rankings. My GMAT (mock) score is quite low as of now (510) and I'm worried if I would be able to reach the score range expected for the top 10 schools based out of Europe, and there's also not a lot of time at hand since round 2 deadlines are right around the corner. So I'm beginning to consider non-GMAT/GRE options like FSFM, Grenoble, IE (I know IE is one of the best out there so I'm not sure if I could crack IEGAT). Could you please give me some advice on this? What's your opinion on these schools? I'm feeling very helpless and confused and I don't know what to do. I have to enroll for the 2022 Fall Intake and can't further delay my MBA studies either. So Sir if you have anything that could be of help, even a few words could really make a huge difference for my career and life.

  • @MBACrystalBall

    Other than the bschool brand, there are other factors that influence the RoI. Generally top ranking programs cost a lot more than lower ranking ones. That makes it riskier to recoup the investment. Which is why most elite MBA students head to consulting, investment banking that pay high salaries. Getting a job also depends on the experience and skills you bring to the table. Career changers have a tougher time. Bottomline is - you don't need a top 10 school if you find a way to control/influence the other factors. As you know, the GMAT score is quite low. But it's just a mock score, right? That means there's scope for improvement. If you're keen to apply in R1 to programs that have waived the GMAT score, that's always an option. And don't get too stressed if things don't work out. Life will keep giving you more chances, as long as you have the energy and drive to keep trying.

    @@MBACrystalBall I truly appreciate your time and it means a great deal to me to receive a response, I'm sure you'd be swamped with more important work so thank you, Sir! So it all eventually comes down to my skills. But I'm not 100% sure of what industry or field I want to work in post-graduation and Sir would you say this is a problem for now? I always imagined that through the course of my MBA program I would get a better grasp over where and what kind of work I want to do, y'know understand my interests, strengths and weaknesses better and choose my field accordingly. I'm not sure if I'm on the right path right now, an MBA like you mentioned is a significant investment, and I believe it's the best chance I would get to build a meaningful career. But my GMAT prep is not going the way it should be and that's why I thought I should begin to consider schools that have their own entrance tests or don't require GMAT compulsorily. Sir, what are your thoughts on schools like FSFM, Grenoble, SKEMA? I know they aren't the best out there and I'm trying to gather as much information as I can about these schools. I've always heard from peers and even seen people talk widely on the internet and in the industry about how the school brand plays a huge role in the job market. And also going to non-English speaking countries is a huge risk considering that I don't know a word in French, German, etc but yes it's not impossible to learn these languages but it's still something I'm a bit worried about. It's very stressful, there are so many factors to look into and when there are people graduating from schools like LBS, INSEAD, HEC you begin to feel like you just don't stand a chance, or at least I don't. I had always dreamt of studying in one of those top schools but my GMAT score is not coming through and the money is also an issue. To study in Imperial was the goal. I wish I had started sooner with my GMAT prep then maybe I could have at least applied there but with a 510 I won't make it to any of the good ones in UK or Europe. It's frightening. I'm sorry Sir I don't want to bother you too much but if you could tell me anything you think about FSFM, Grenoble, or any other good no-GMAT schools out there?

  • @MBACrystalBall

    @MBACrystalBall

    Other than GMAT score, choice of bschool, branding, there's a bigger and more fundamental issue here - expectation mismatch. Would it be right to assume you haven't read 'Beyond The MBA Hype'? If yes, then take a step back and give it a read. It would give you many more perspectives to think about, rather than rushing in when you aren't clear about what to expect.

    Choosing the specialisation is the second step in the process, since it depends on your career goals. As you're going for a second MBA, you'll have to be extra careful about not going down the wrong path. Take a step back and think about the reasons you're heading back to the classroom, and what you want to get out of this experience. Unlike Indian programs, specialisation works differently (via electives) in international programs. Read up more on that as well.

    An MiM after an Indian MBA would be completely pointless. A second MBA could be worth considering, but only after you've worked for 3-4 years and got a good idea of where you want to take your career. I have just gotten into college. I will be pursuing a degree in Production Engineering from NIT Tiruchirapalli. I plan to join their on-campus Consulting Club and fully dedicate the next four years to building a resume in this direction. My questions are as follows- 1. Does it seem likely that Harvard, Stanford or the likes would be willing to offer me a place in their MBA programs directly after college? Since I am not going to graduate from an IIT, what can I expect from a global school? 2. Am I missing out by graduating from an IIM as opposed to an Ivy League, as far as the Consulting Industry goes? 3. I believe that if i dedicate the next four years on CAT preparations, I can crack a top IIM. Can I have the same surety in terms of an abroad goal? In that case, is it advisable to take help from an MBA Consultant, or is it common for students to build a portfolio on their own?

  • @MBACrystalBall

    @MBACrystalBall

    1. Very unlikely for their regular MBA intake. You can check out HBS 2+2 program. 2. Elite consulting firms recruit from a few top IIMs. If you get into one of those, you do have a shot. 3. There is no guarantee when it comes to international MBA programs. All you can do is build your profile to improve your chances. You don't need an MBA consultant at this stage. Do it independently.

    MBA after 30 can be quite risky. American programs typically get students with around 5 years experience. And they're two years long, meaning you'll be away from a regular salary for longer. EMBA is an option, but depends on what you expect from the experience. Since you've been away from work for a while, why not take up a job and build some new skills and network?

    @@MBACrystalBall I want to see myself as a marketing consultant. As I am already into digital marketing, the marketing industry attracts me a lot. Can you suggest some ways about how could I align everything with my career goals?

    Check out the profiles of MBA grads who've graduated from the top marketing bschools (our video has that list). See where they've worked before their MBA. That will give you many ideas to consider.

So, for work experience, if I do assistant job at reserve Bank of India (via RBI exam) or any other good Government job for 2-2.5 years, so will this type of work ex will be good enough, so that my chances for Doing MBA from Top b schools of USA, Canada or Europe become more higher ? I will also do some volunteering work besides this ? Is this whole plan sounds good to go for MBA abroad or should I think something else ? Pls sir kindly suggest .

    Top bschools generally expect a faster than average growth graph. It can be tough to do that in some roles where the growth is driven more by tenure than by performance. Any specific reason you want to take up a government job?

    Why not take the CAT and try for a good Indian MBA? Less risky compared to getting an MiM.
