• ISB vs IIM - Best MBA ...
• The reality about ISB/...
• My Journey To ISB | IS...
--
Have you ever wondered which amongst the MBA schools is the best fit for you?
To answer this question, we will divide this career insight into 5 sections.
Upfront Investment- Fees
Firstly, lets analyse the input cost to the institutions.
Currently, ISB costs around 33 Lakhs.
On the other hand, IIMs stand around 24 Lakhs. Of course, this is also a big investment.
Though, the notable point is that ISB has a one year programme. This, in my opinion, is its upside because you can quickly finish your degree and get back into the job market here.
The opportunity cost, in this case, is lower for ISB as you forgo only one year of your salary.
Diversity of Cohort
Coming to of your peer network.
ISB has more than 39% women and about 5-10% of international students. Comparatively, IIMs have almost negligible international representations and relatively lower female cohorts.
You may wonder why this diversity is so important.
The answer lies in the history of failed ventures and nations which were primarily caused due homogenisation of thoughts.
Diversity of thought facilitates different opinions, thereby enforcing innovation.
Teaching Model
Looking at the classroom teaching model.
Both these institutions have highly accredited academic professors.
In ISB, renowned professors from global institutions such as Wharton, Kellogg, Fletcher and akin fly in periodically to teach you. In fact, I had the privilege of attending a lecture from the mayor of New York on ethical leadership and responsibility.
This is where the magic happens.
The discussion and various opinions brought upon by the professors and students open your thought horizons.
At the end of the day, the MBA curriculum is supposed to question your mental model to generate holistic learning.
Job Pivotting by Sector
This brings us to one of our most important sections, which includes the new sectors MBA can help you discover.
ISB is largely known for its consulting and product management based employment. My classmates at ISB joined various unicorns and leading ventures in ed-tech and fin-tech. Whereas, IIMs generally have better marketing and finance related jobs over and above consulting.
Your next question is perhaps why this distinction occurs in the first place.
So, the average experience of an ISB student is 4.5 years and that of an IIM student is less than a year.
Many marketing firms typically look for freshers for their job profiles, so IIM become a an ideal source for them.
Average CTC
Diving straight into the most awaited section.
ISB reported an average of 32 lakhs per annum CTC.
While the CTC for IIMs was around 27 lakhs. The reason behind this distinction again lies in the average number of work experience per student.
To conclude, I am purposely not giving a very specific answer. Both institutions have their stronger points. Nevertheless, there are various alternatives to an MBA.

Note- The average earnings of IIMs depend upon a lot of other external and internal factors- eg. which IIMs (A/B/C/L/K/I), which year of placement. The average can hover +-20% depending upon the macro economy, graduating year etc. . On a totally related, feel free to check out Impact MBA Scholars of GGI here- www.globalgovernanceinitiative.org/

In my opinion, IIMA B C are better than ISB. The brand value which IIMs have, can't be compared with ISB anyday. ISB is no doubt performing Exceptionally great but 2yrs of MBA which IIMs have the option to provide is giving it an extra edge over the ISB. Again the peer group which we get in ISB will be better than IIMs but again this is not justifiable when IIMs are giving the opportunity even to freshers.

You have not included the caliber of students. The top rankers are usually the ones picking IIM over ISB. Notwithstanding other criteria mentioned for the placement salaries, it does go without saying the brand recognition of IIM far surpasses that of ISB. Is it a wonder, then that GOI hopes to open an IIM in almost every state viz a viz an ISB. That being said, I like your lucid clear narrative, and am glad I have started my journey from merchant navy towards an mba , by watching your videos.

I'd like to add a few more points ISB fees has increased to 42 lpa. IIM fees is about 23+5( the 5 is for exchange). But the opportunity cost is same since ISB is a one year programme. Infact a person who earns lets say 12 lpa is better off going to ISB(as he will work an extra one year post MBA and his net spend for ISB is 12+42= 54 and If he/she goes to IIM it becomes 12+12+28=52. So the net spend is pretty much same. Average package at IIM C this year was more than ISB( it was 34 lpa) Average workex at top IIMs is about 2 years so there is a balance of both freshers and experienced folks ISB has been doing way better than IIM ABC when it comes to product manager roles, similarly Finance roles are better at IIM ABC

Hi you are right. But the net spend for ISB in 2 yrs would be 12+42 - 25 = 29 L because you'll start earning from 2nd year , assuming you have got package of 25L. Meanwhile the 2yrs in IIMs , your net spend would be 12+12+28 - 2L(internship stipend) = 50L. So conclusion is that ISB saves 1 yr of opportunity cost.

You said avg. Work experience at ISB goes to 4.5 yrs and that is one of the key reasons for the high CTC. But what about the students who get into ISB via YLP and have a work ex of 2 yrs, Does they have lower CTC? And if someone has 2 yrs work ex, should that person look for MBA in IIMs or ISB? Which school can be the better choice?

  • @jarbuyer

    @jarbuyer

    2 жыл бұрын

For YLP guys they are selected by ISB beofre joining the workforce so the recruiter knows that the person is highle skilled, so YLP members get better opportunities and if possible the same company might sponsor their MBA and give them high promotions. coming to IIM vs ISB; ISB has bigger alumni network and modern teaching approach. IIM are only better iff you want to MBA without work-ex directly after your undergrad. Cheers

ISB will beat any Indian B school in terms of faculty. Most of them are researchers and they aren't just the best in India, they are some of the best in the world to put in perspective: even a few of the ex deans of the holy trinity teach at ISB. Infrastructure again it's subjective but it is at par if not better. Placements: all top B school placements are good because of the brand image these schools have ISB competes with A here. ISB's selection is not based on exam marks alone and that's why college accumulates the best profiles overall as compared to IIMs. ROI: ISB charges hefty fees it's 37 actually. but if you get the least package at the school. you would be in better ROI point than passing out of IIM now the program can at best be compared to 2 years programs at IIM ABC. LIK are not even comparable (no hard feelings it's probably harder to crack them through CAT) All this in a short span of time whereas ABC are already 50ish year old. (disclaimer: current student at ISB)
