As with any managerial role, in theory, you don't need to have got your hands dirty doing technical work. But it surely helps to know how the underlying product and technology works. Specifically when you're competing with other MBA grads who come from tech backgrounds (and there are a ton of those in the top bschools). If you bring in some strong skills (like communication, negotiation, networking) that can help you gain some brownie points for roles such as business development.

The high rank can be helpful to communicate that you have the cerebral power to crack competitive exams. But keep in mind that MBA applications focus on a range of things that go beyond the ability to get a high score in entrance tests (GMAT gives them that idea already). So don't rely on the high rank to be a game changer.

I'm still a few years away from applying. Do you think constantly trying to get in touch with MBA students and sharing my reasons for applying is a good idea? How to deal with feeling intimidated when talking to them? (The intimidation is because of 2 things: 1. they are sort of living a 'dream life' that I'm not yet; 2. the relationship hasn't been established yet, and I don't want it to be just about me constantly trying to ask for help.)

Starting early is good, and so is independent research. But going overboard isn't. There are many ways to gain knowledge - one of them is by reading up on MBA student experiences. Once you are fairly clear about the basics, your questions will get more specific. So take it slow, and don't get too stressed out so early in the race.

Products exist in a variety of fields (FMCG/Retail being the most visible of them all with its B2C appeal), not just IT. Sir, I have a query. I have watched your video on how to build profile for MBA to get into a b-school. My question 🙋🏻‍♀️: I am first class undergraduate pass, with a GPA of 3 in masters degree (public administration) and almost 2 years of experience as finance admin from an Indo-German organization. I understand that I would need a good GRE score & more work experience in order to compensate to get admitted into Harvard. I know you won’t be able to confirm my admission on the behalf of Harvard. Is there any possibility for me to get into Harvard B-school?😅

That'll depend on what pre-MBA practical skills you're able to offer the employer, other than the theory you've picked up during the MBA.

Product management isn't just about programming and technicalities. If you can find and highlight your skills in any of the related niches that we've covered in the video, you'd have a good chance. Can you think of any (non-technical) strengths that might be relevant?

If a role requires technical skills, they'll mention that in the job description. If you don't have those, then two options: - Build those skills first and then apply. - Skip this role and look for others where you have a better fit.

You may find electives related to project management at the top schools. Not sure if any of them offer a full-fledged specialisation option. Instead of an MBA, you can consider certifications such as PMP, if project management is the only focus for you.
