MBA in India or abroad

MBA in India vs MBA abroad. Which is better?
Sameer Kamat, founder of MBA Crystal Ball, covers all you need to know about the advantages, disadvantages, pros and cons of studying abroad in an international university vs studying in India.
He covers the differences in fees, salaries, costs, classmates, in 2-year MBA in India (like IIM) versus an MBA in USA, UK, Canada, Singapore, Europe. It'll help you decide whether CAT MBA is better than GMAT MBA for you.
And don't miss our non-diplomatic recommendation in the end.

Hi Sameer Though I graduated in engineering it's a thing of the past I currently work at sbi as a po and have been a zonal level table tennis player I also am an aspiring writer so even one published article down my kitty could do well I guess I have 90 70 70 sort of academics which won't aid an admit at top b schools unless I obtain a very high score but even if I study by putting my work at stake it doesn't guarantee a pleasant score And so I have thought whether I could focus on my table tennis and writing and additionally take gmat for isb and b shcools offshore Do you think I am doing it right? I have an experience of 15 months and I am 24 right now All I want an affirmation that guys with my profile get scholarships because ofcourse I can't pay such humongous tuition fee It's almost being in a tug of war between cat and gmat Also if I may add, I am interested in marketing but do guys change profiles after mba abroad? Sbi po does involve aggressive cross selling but it's not holistically core marketing Thanks

@@ankurajay3933 Hi Ankur, your current experience would be low for GMAT based programs. Since acads are cast in stone, focus on the other aspects you have in hand. Without having a concrete GMAT score, all discussions (about chances, scholarships etc) would be speculative. If you have the patience to wait, you can focus on building and improving your profile. Take it one step at a time. Many of the things that seem confusing now will start falling into place.

You shouldn't pursue MBA to get a job. You should get a job first and then pursue MBA. An MBA without real experience is of hardly any use. Even if you have the degree, doesn't mean you know how to run a business. BEING a manager and WORKING as a manager are two vastly different aspects.

Algorithms and bots have finally got me to this channel, which as a Jazz fan I'd say is the Perfect Charlie Parker in terms of grace, quality to other Educational content on MBA. Your use of music as a Sound engineer is very soothing and perfect and it plays out and conducts itself properly like a symphony. Your piercing insights and right to the bone analysis, inspires me and motivates me and makes me aware and assess and critique things from a detached perspectives. However, my question is a bit of odds and sodds in a much more silly manner, but I guess you've always had those. Here it goes. I'm in the midst of preparing for CAT, However if a good score doesn't workout for me, should I work(I'm a fresher) who's jumped the ship after my graduation in Management Studies to Sound Engineering and now I'm thinking of returning to claim what I believe is my ambitious little dream of being a leader and a learner and a go getter. What would you recommend me to do? My target college apart from IIM's is MICA. Do recommend and help me find my way back, it would be much appreciated.

There are plenty of excellent opportunities to think about with more experience. Good luck!

Hi Sameer, Needed your opinion on my profile suitability for HBS/Wharton for 2nd MBA. I have done my B.Tech from VIT with 8.1 CGPA and MBA from IIM Ahmedabad(99.6 percentile CAT) and 2.9 CGPA with decent scores in 10th and 12th(87.4 and 87.2% respectively) Post MBA, I worked with Hotstar as a Data Scientist for 4 years and now working with Amazon Hyderabad as a senior Data Scientist. I will be shifting to Seattle with Amazon mostly by Sep/Oct. I am targeting to apply to Top 3 B-Schools by 2021 after strengthening my profile and some clarity on my SOP(Plus financing my education costs). Before reaching out to you for personal guidance, I wanted to get GMAT out of the picture by targeting 760+ in next couple of months. Needed your opinion on whether the plan looks doable or have you encountered such profiles in the past for double MBA? Much appreciated.

Hi Ravi, yes we've worked with IIM A/B/C grads for a second MBA. Some things to keep in mind. 1. Purely from the designation, it seems like it's a highly technical role. Make sure you present the non-technical aspects of your profile too. 2. Since you already have an MBA, and many years of work experience, the more you delay your application, the further you'll move from the median stats for the class, making it (statistically) tougher to fit in. Are your primarily pushing the application date because of the Seattle opportunity?

Here's why: www.mbacrystalball.com/blog/2011/08/21/work-experience-why-is-it-important-for-international-mba-applications/ Ireland doesn't figure in the list of top MBA destinations for international students. So it's all the more important to find out more about the risks and rewards of going there. Cost is an important factor. But don't make it the primary reason for selecting a geography.

Hi Sameer I am a graduate from IIT Kanpur and I have been working with a British bank for the last two years(Although on the tech side). I want to do an MBA but I am really confused if that would be the best step forward in my career. I really love tech and want to stay in a tech company(more on the business side) even after completing MBA, I don't wanna do it in India as I already make around the same ballpark so doing an MBA in India just seems like a waste, I don't wanna do MS because that means I will be stuck forever on the tech side. So I have come to the conclusion the I will aim for an MBA in schools which also has a strong engineering background, like MIT or CMU, I don't know if that makes sense.

Sure, it makes sense, Raj. One tip - before taking the plunge into the international MBA waters, it might be helpful to wait for a year or two more. See if the additional experience gives you more clarity on how your interests evolve, where you want to take your career. And whether you start enjoying a balance between hard-core tech work and getting involved in some business aspects.

Hi Sruthika, most good programs in India and abroad will insist on a competitive test score (in CAT, GMAT, GRE). Instead of assuming that an MBA is a must, it may be better to explore the option of working for a few years. It'll not only help you build up your savings to help your family, but also give you useful skills that you can use to get promotions and grow. For now, focus on completing your BBA with flying colours.

@@gunjanyadav2691 before u decide ur specialisation u need to know what ur goal is... 1) you want to be an entrepreneur in ur area of knowledge 2) you want to secure a job in this field only. If you are just looking to increase ur options then u are on the wrong path.. because then you become part of the crowd and u become replacable. If you want to open ur own startup or work in a managerial position then MBA general would be good. If you want to particularly work in your field then pharma would be good. Also, if u think like a company u will have ur answer. Employees are like products to them. So for eg. We buy patatoes in bulk and but melons or paneer or costly stuff- we check them thoroughly and give a good price....so if you choose to do pharma, ur actually increasing your chances of getting a job because u are tailored for tht position and how many many others do you know who have done tht specialisation? Also, if you choose to do MBA general, then even then u need to narrow down the kind of jobs and roles u want, ur area of interest, ur reason for doing general MBA. Decision making is hard but if you are wishy washy about ur Goals and have no specific plans... then only those kind of generic opportunities will come to you. Taking a few calculated risk will help land better opportunities. start looking at companies and jobs n positions tht u like, understand their requirement...do deep research and decide on your OWN. No one can tell you what to choose they can only tell you facts...and u have to use tht fact to decide. In the end, don't be potato..be melon.(or whatever fruit u like).

Are the online degrees (such as bba, bca offered by manipal, jain university and amrita ahead. Similarly Bsc in Programming and Data Science by IIT Madras.) accepted as a "graduation" by IIMs and all other business schools in India and abroad to do MBA?

We always recommend being extra cautious about new courses that haven't stood the test of time.

Sir, I wanted to enquire if there is a possibility for an Architecture student to pursue an MBA abroad and what should the work experience path be like?

Yes, architects can apply to business schools. A good mix of technical and managerial work experience, along with clear career goals would be important. Apart from all the other regular aspects such as good test scores, great essays.

I don't have any work experience, and I am not planning to do a job. I just want to run family business and expand it and to start new business in different fields. I want to do MBA to get basic knowledge and to get an experience to live outside , getting away from my comfort zone, connecting with people. first question is that should I do MBA, if yes then where India or abroad. I want to do it just for exposer, experience.

All the good international MBA programs expect several years of work experience. You can consider MiM abroad, or Indian MBA programs.

Given your experience level, an MBA would fit better. MS/MiM programs generally attract fresh graduates or those with under 2 years of experience.

We've shared the pros and cons in the video above. Is there anything specific you wanted to know about that we've not touched upon? You don't need consulting services if you do your independent and thorough research.

Most students going abroad end up working in popular industries such as consulting, finance, technology since they are the ones that are more open to sponsoring work permits. We're not too sure about the scope of agribusiness after graduating from the reputed programs, since bschools don't mention about niche placements.

We're not familiar with it. When you're going for an expensive course, better to go for the original degree from the original country.
