    Hey Mr. Kamat, thank you for putting out such great content, you might remember me from our conversation in the comments section of your previous video. I have a few questions that I was hoping you might be able to help me with. I am a first-year commerce (Bcom) undergraduate student at a Tier 3 university, I've recently started working part time as an exam proctor and grader at a local high school and I am currently deciding between two options for my post-graduation plans. I am interested in pursuing a career in consulting, preferably at one of the MBBs. However, I am unsure whether to prepare for CAT and try to get admission to one of the IIMs or prepare for banking exams (PO, RBI Grade B) and work as a PO in commercial banking for a few years before applying to MBB feeder schools abroad. What would you recommend as the best approach to achieving my career goals? Would working as a PO in commercial banking for a few years before applying to MBB feeder schools abroad enhance my chances of getting into a top-tier consulting firm? Even If I do make it to an IIM would the MBBs even consider me for an interview, given the lack of extra curriculars in my undergrad? Thank you in advance for your response.

    Between IIM and a PO job, the first one is a better route to MBB jobs. We haven't come across anyone with a PO background who have got into MBB. Being in the first year gives you 2+ years to do something on the extracurricular part. So try to make the most of this opportunity. And there are many good consulting firms beyond MBB that you can consider, where you'll get a good exposure to how management consulting works. And the pay is quite good in those other firms too.

    Your second sentence has the answer. But as a general rule of thumb, we've seen that entrepreneurs have better and more varied stories to include in their essays helping them stand out from the crowd. The flip side is that they have too many too choose from, and they end up squeezing in too much - assuming at least some of it will impress the admission officer. Stay away from that trap. Are you planning to apply this year? What GMAT / GRE score do you have, or are expecting?

    Hi Sameer and MCB Team. I hope you're doing well. Just wanted to know in the era of AI & ChatGPT do you think MBA is still necessary (Specially International MBA) for climbing corporate ladder quickly. In future to get into senior management position for any top MNCs, is MBA still necessary to have in resume? What's your take on this? How do you think MBA syllabus will change in upcoming years where technology and AI automate most jobs? Kindly provide your two cents. Thanks

    By definition management science is about being able to see the bigger picture and taking strategic decisions that in turn will trickle down to the operational levels. Tools like AI, ChatGPT will be used for productivity to take over mechanical and easily repeatable tasks. As long as you are clear about what role you want to play in business, then an MBA can be helpful is getting to know the bigger picture. To take a simpler example, calculators didn't take over our jobs. We'll learnt how to use them to make our jobs easier.

    Is a deferred MBA a good option for non-business undergraduates? what is b school generally looking for in a candidate, how can the student build her profile, and which time is a perfect time to start the deferred MBA process to get into like Harvard, Wharton, or Columbia.? I'm asking because I'm a first-gen student in my family I don't have anyone counseling, I use only the internet to get some information.

    Yes, you can consider a deferred MBA even if you don't have a business undergrad degree. But you do need to have a strong rationale for pursuing it. We'll get to your other questions once we've got the basics clear. So let's take it one step at a time. Do you currently have a reason for considering a deferred MBA over other options such as a regular masters degree?

    Outside the US, we've listed a couple of options in the video (IESE and ISB). But IESE wouldn't make your filter since it's not an English speaking country. One of the reasons deferred MBA isn't as popular in other countries is connected to the fact that Europe has an alternative degree (MiM) targetted at the same target market. So there's not much of an incentive for them to offer other degrees that cannibalise their other programs. @@mnkr32 Exchange experience will not give you the same experience as a full-time student in the same program, given the limited time you get in the new country. So if you do not have financial constraints, it can be a nice-to-have exposure. But if you cannot make it, you aren't losing much. Which is probably the reason you weren't able to find any seniors who've taken it.

    Hi Sameer and the MCB team, thank you so much for the work you do to help the student community in India. I'll be attending a T15 in the coming fall. They have been generous to help me with a 60% scholarship. However, choosing to attend the program over ISB was extremely hard for me to do. I had withdrawn my admission to ISB at the last possible moment. I was told by members of the careers team that I'd have limited career options out of ISB considering my previous work experience. I'm an only child and I'd have to take care of my aging parents. While thankfully mu parents are still doing well, leaving India for the US is making me jittery. Could you please do an updated video (or shed some light through comments) of the opportunities and career graphs for people in consulting/prod man post returning to India after working in the US for 3-4 years Thank you so much once again for all your help.

    Congrats on the multiple admits! It's a little strange that ISB gave you a bleak picture on the possibilities, and this was after giving you an admit. Nevertheless, you have several things going in your favour. You've got a generous scholarship that takes off the financial pressure to some extent. And your parents are in good health. So personal pressures are off for the next few years, allowing you to spread your wings. Could you share a bit more about your work experience? Would like to understand more on why ISB thought it was so niche. Are you attending a STEM MBA program?

    @@MBACrystalBall thank you so much for responding! Well it wasn't exactly an official from isb, but a student member in the CAS team. I've known this person for a while now so I didn't see any reason to doubt him. On the contrary, I don't have a niche profile at all. I'm as vanilla as they come. I'm a software developer from a non IIT/NIT with a little over 6 years of work ex. From what I understand, pivoting (especially into consulting and the MBB) could get quite challenging for me considering the quantum of work ex and the fact that I have been a software developer through and through. From what I gather, I would be able to pivot abroad as the recruitment happens at a level or two above what happens at ISB and this would be commensurate to someone having my level of experience ( for eg in Amazon parlance L4 at ISB vs L6 in the US or in McKinsey terms Junior Associate at ISB vs Associate in the US). I also got a similar impression after speaking with the recently graduated students having similar backgrounds to mine. They too had difficulty in pivoting at isb and were restricted to Tech. Since the reverse migration back home to India is relatively uncommon, I was wondering how the career trajectory would be for folks like myself. Yes, I'm attending a STEM program

  • @MBACrystalBall

    @MBACrystalBall

    Жыл бұрын

    Thanks for that clarity. ISB does make it super-difficult to get into MBB. We published an article on it written by an ISB student who got into a non-MBB company. Let me know if you'd like to read it. The odds sure are higher if you target a feeder MBA program for consulting. If the program you're targeting is in that league, that's part of the battle won since you'll at least have a decent shot at those companies. If you cannot get into MBB, or a tier-2/3 consulting firm, that's not the end of the world. Along with consulting, you can aim for companies where you're looking for a role change within the same industry. That would still be a win. And reverse migration is getting more common that you think. If you choose to come back after 3-4 years (since the STEM status gives you more breathing room), what would matter is that new experience and not the degree itself. Makes sense?

The curriculum of an MBA program while important, is less crucial compared to its reputation and credibility in the market. You're evaluation criteria seems to focus on differing priorities. When you're applying to deferred MBA, unfortunately, you don't have any work experience (internships don't have the same impact). Why not wait to gain some experience and then consider a masters? Btw, what was the reason for those low grades?

    @@MBACrystalBall I believe I invested more time on my internships and extra curricular activities and that's the primary reason behind my low grades. Since I'm in my penultimate year of study, what do you suggest should be my strategy if I want to target MIM B-Schools, and not MBA Programmes straight after my law school? It would be really great if you could please have a look at my CV once and guide me regarding which schools fit my profile the best.

    In evaluating any academic degree, the grades matter quite a bit, especially for fresh grads. Give the extracurriculars a little break and try to get the grades up as much as you can. And you still have a chance to score high on the GMAT/GRE.

    For some, switching from GMAT to GRE helps. But if verbal has been an issue, then that switch will not help. The other option is to aim for programs that skip the GMAT score requirement and look at the rest of the profile. Check this list for some options and reach out if you need application help with any of them. www.mbacrystalball.com/blog/2021/01/18/mba-without-gmat-low-scores-canada-europe/

    CAT MBA programs would not have been a good fit for you, considering the amount of experience you have. So despite the bad news on the CAT scoring front, it was probably good that you did not join a program where you'd be spending time with freshers and recent grads.
