Seattle's homeless encampments during freezing winter snowstorm.

Emergency Shelters opened up throughout King County but some remained in their tents.

I had to ask one of my kids to leave the house due to his drug issues (heroin) in his early 20s. After putting him in 4 different rehabilitation centers, I was just done with it. He spent a few weeks being homeless. It was terrible on me. I did take him food & supplies, but he couldn't live in the house anymore. Well, he didn't like being homeless. Turned his life around and made changes in his actions and attitude and now has his own house he's currently renting and loves it. Just got a job that he's on track to make over 50k this year. I'm so proud of him and when I look into his eyes now, life is back for him. He did this, I only supported him.

@@snowmoon7385 I appreciate your perspective. However, we had only had 10,000 discussions/arguments about his drug use. At some point, sober people have to set boundaries that addicts are no longer able to cross without consequences, otherwise, the enabling never stops on my part. He kicked in a door because he had gotten mad about something, broke it off the hinges. THAT crossed a boundary. I was done. I told him that I love him but he couldn't live in the house anymore. I was done. I was barely sane.... I had to protect the other members of my family. I kicked him out due to necessity. You need to know his bad behavior and drugs had been tormenting us for years at this point. It was what I finally chose to do. He was 21at the time.

To Seattle flyboard, Always set your camp within the woods. Find a nice open area. Buy yourself a big tarp and three rolls of nylon cord/rope or clothes lines. Tie each unraveled rope to each corner end, then one in the middle eyelets. Then take a fist sized rock, place it in a tube sock for each of the opposite ends of the ropes, make sure you tie a knot in the opened end, cut a slit below the knot to feed the rope threw and tie it good and tight. Starting at one corner sling the rock in the sock up and threw a sturdy tree. The sock should fall out the other side. Pull your tarp up as far up as nessasary. Wrap your rope around the tree trunk waist high, over lapping it, before cutting it to tie off. Repeat the same on all four corners and middle. The back of the tarp should be lower than the front for runoff. The heavier the tarp the longer it will last. A dry camp is a happy camp. ✌Peace

Every city should have a homeless camp provided by the city. They have one here in Tampa and it's a tent community. It has showers and they feed the homeless 3 meals a day. All while offering assistance and help with food stamps until they are able to find employment and get back up on their feet. It's not just short term help but long-term. Other cities across the country should follow Tampa's model. It's effective

My husband had his leg removed and had quad,, bypass an we lost our house (of 15yrs)all within a 2month period. we've been"homeless" for going 2 yrs, i say it that way bc we do have a rv I bought as a project,, now we live in our neighbors back yard. we both have a small income, but just can't find a home we can afford. It's crazy I used to be the one helping homeless, now here I am. I am very thankful for what I do have, but,, I'm in survival mode, and lost at the same time. If that makes sense.

Hi Mary...being in survival mode takes so much time and energy. The stress wears you out and feeling "lost" is not unusual. Sounds like you would easily qualify for HUD housing. The waiting lists vary in time but it is worth it. You pay only 1/3 of your income and there are deductions (any medical things you have to pay yourself so long as your MD writes a note) and programs to help with utilities. Quality of the apartments can go from nice to awful depending on location. I got on a list, waited two years because I knew there was no way I could live elsewhere. If you find a good place...you are free of maintenance jobs (like in a house). Usually water and trash are included. Good luck and blessings for an easier path from now on.

Evidently parts of America must feel this is a kindness to have people exist like this. I suggest America learn to care enough about its own people. Before it continually involves itself in other countries problems. These pictures of what life is like for these people is a disgrace. These encampments are also communities where they share information through word of mouth, just yesterday I visited a homeless encampment to donate some firewood and at first nobody would speak to me since I was an outsider. They asked me if I was a cop and once they saw I came to help they allowed me to enter their community. Also, many social workers conduct welfare checks and notify them of any free services. As for transportation, most of these encampments are in or around downtown where most of the free services are located.

The shelters all have difficulties of their own especially with covid lack of staff or security you have a tiny space for a short time and u must be able to carry all of your belongings all the time and try to make real safe buddies or just going to the bathroom can be the stuff of horror movies and life long traumas I don't judge ppl do what they do until they know something new or are willing to change cuz whatever life is today is so painful that you become brave creative or determined to escape

Why doesn’t the government purchase land and build a community of tiny homes and a community grocery, a property manager, security guard (retired cops), Maintenance person, garbage dump and pickup, all the basic needs to survive and opportunities to improve life. Personal bathroom, electricity, Wi-Fi, community lounge, library, entertainment, a few computers. Have large companies, wealthy citizens provide financial support because they are they are the ones who created these problems. Screen individuals who apply for housing. I would be more than happy to volunteer my time make this happen.

San Francisco has so many homeless and now the rents are so high that there is no chance they can get off the streets. It just a step away from many Americans. They can lose a job, or health goes bad, Landlords pushing long term tenants out with ellis acts. Many are working living in their van or car. Then the state imposes laws for people not to live in their cars. Landlords keep raising rents so inequality is so bad here. People walk by the homeless living on the sidewalks and you can see that many are mentally ill. Just so sad.
