I'm a doctor and my experience has been that the people close to the person experiencing cognitive decline are the last to see it because they get so used to making up for the deficit. It's done quite mechanically, almost without thought. By the time they bring them in, it can be quite advanced and has been going on for a while. People outside the group notice it first, especially if they haven't seen the person for a while, and end up being the ones to point it out to the loved ones, who themselves have to go through a realization process. "Oh, yes, he is a bit forgetful but that happens to all of us." Ragen was also very cognitively impaired by the end of his presidency, and I remember seeing Nancy Ragen actually whispering the answers to him under her breath while looking at the ground during an interview with journalists in the Rose Garden. I think the White House is going through that process now. They also have to evaluate how to transition, without making it easier for Trump. Lots of things to get in order...

Thank you Vlad. Since the debate and the supreme court ruling I have worked through a range of emotions. It started with anger. Anger for being lied to about his cognitive state. I felt angry about the pure arrogance these people are expressing by underating the damage that was done after the debate. In the past few days the anger has shifted to confusion, fear, sadness and finally hopelessness.

I am mostly concerned about the impact on world peace and stability if Trump gets in. At one level that, in democracies politics swings from left to right and back again are a normal part of the self correcting mechanisms that democracy affords. It is the extremity of the swing to authoritarianism that concerns me and Trump’s lack of morality and cow-towing to Putin and other tyrants that concerns me.

Vlad the more I listen and think, the more I realize that Star Wars Episodes I-III really is a lesson in democratic decline. Thank you.

I do agree that the ruling is troubling for its vagueness, but I also have to say that Justice Roberts has a point.

I don't think Kamala is anyone's first choice as a candidate, but in terms of making the cleanest and least controversial choice, she's the right play to make. Campaign finance law won't allow the Biden/Harris campaign's money to just change hands to some other campaign, which is probably the biggest thing to consider now that the DNC only has 4 months to get their act together. As much as she isn't an animating force, she's demonstrably less of a
