0:00 - Intermediate/Drive Clutch Cork
6:08 - Cutter Clutch Cork
Before the intermediate (drive) clutch and cutter clutch can be installed, we'll need to prepare the clutch corks.
Replacement cork material in the correct thickness and cut to size can be purchased for a few dollars. Use a contact cement to adhere the corks. We use Selleys Kwik Grip (the Horizontal product is shown here but Vertical cement runs less). Whatever adhesive you choose should be removable as the corks are considered consumable and will need to removed again in future.
The substrate should be prepared by ensuring any old glue is removed using a knife/sandpaper/etc. Clean with mineral spirits.
Contact cement is applied to both surfaces and allowed to dry prior to bonding. The cork material tends to suck up the first coat of contact cement so a second may be helpful. Spread the cement and allow to set up as per the manufacturer's instructions.
Contact cements can be noxious and you'll want to use it a well-ventilated environment for comfort if nothing else.
The intermediate clutch can be assembled temporarily for added clamping pressure. Install the outer sprocket and the clutch operating bolt/nut to bring everything together. As the clutch is not installed on the mower at this stage, use a space on one side of the bolt to avoid having to run the nut all the way down the thread.
The cutter clutch cork is fit inside the half of the clutch that engages the clutch cone. The clutch cone is obviously conical in shape and the inside of the clutch half is shaped to match. The clutch cork is therefore cut on an arc to fit. Install the cork so it sits hard up against the inside lip of the clutch half.
Avoid getting cement on your cork faces and clean up any mess before it dries.

About me and this channel: I'm Michael, a homeowner and aspiring lawn addict. I make these videos to share as much as I can, as best I can, from my recent experience rebuilding two Scott Bonnar 45 mowers. Although I'm a passionate wood worker and ex-IT guy, I have zero mechanical training. I'm no expert on these subjects but I learn by sharing and it encourages me to grow a better lawn and build a better mower if I know you're watching!

Hey mate :) quick tip with the cork, apply adhesive to both sides, then hold the housing vertical on a desk, put one end of the cork into place from the inside and look through from the other side to see what’s going on, then gently work your way around gradually pressing it into place always looking from one side while placing it down from the other. Hard to explain, but that’s how I found it easiest :)

Thank you for these videos. Just did my drive cork now. I'm learning so much doing this mower with excellent videos like this. I don't think I could handle reading a book.

I put my cork on last night for the first time. I used a vice to help me with clapping as I didn't have them clamps

How long do you let the corks dry once they are together, before you can use the Scotty?

The bond will be instantaneous and should be good to go after 24 hours if you apply pressure by clamping (i.e. using the clutch cone or similar)

Is the outer gear with the inner red bearing meant to spin freely or not?

If the clutch is disengaged, yes the outer sprocket should spin on that large bearing. If engaged, the inner face of the sprocket binds against the cork and won't move. Check out ep 17 in the rebuild series to see the correct setup

If you've installed the clutch, try backing off the nut on the operating bolt a bit
