If you're tearing down your cylinder mower or are just due for a sharpen, you'll need to remove the cutting reel (did you know it's often cheaper to have the reel ground when it's not installed in the mower?).
Today we'll remove the double sprocket from the end of the reel shaft using a three-legged gear puller. We then unbolt and remove the top halves of the left and right bearing housings (00:03:10). You may need to remove the adjuster screws first if they're in the way.
The reel can then be removed (00:06:56) but don't forget to inspect the shaft, bearings and bearing shields.
Since this machine is being fully stripped down, the lower bearing housings also need to come off. The adjuster bolts are loosened off first before unbolting and then removing the left and right lower housings (00:08:31).
In subsequent videos we'll be taking this machine back to bare metal before the rebuild. Watch all the teardown videos here: • Scott Bonnar 45 Teardown
Check out the SB 45 walkthrough videos if you're new to cylinder mowers and Scott Bonnars: • Scott Bonnar 45 Walkth...
Don't forget to disconnect your spark plug before starting work on your machine!

A huge thank you to everyone who liked the Love Larn Facebook page :)
About me and this channel: I'm Michael, a homeowner and aspiring lawn addict. I make these videos to share as much as I can, as best I can, from my recent experience rebuilding two Scott Bonnar 45 mowers. Although I'm a passionate wood worker and ex-IT guy, I have zero mechanical experience. I'm no expert on these subjects but I learn by sharing and it encourages me to grow a better lawn and build a better mower if I know you're watching!

FYI: with the bearing shell bolts you can pick up equivalent hex-head bolts from Repco (Champion brand) that do the trick - I did this with mine as one of the original bolts snapped in half when I removed it. You can get OEM-style ones from the Scott Bonnar Restorations FB page from Cameron, who sells replacement bolt kits

Cameron Petrie's bolt kits are amazing! I replaced most of the fasteners on this machine with his stainless kit in the end (please stand by for the upcoming rebuild series). Good tip about the hex bolts from Repco--didn't know they sold bolts!

Hi Ben, thanks for watching! Should be on to the rebuild series in the next couple of weeks (but I wouldn't wait for me as I'm pretty slow editing). The rebuild footage is complete though so let me know if you're after something specific 🎬

Cannot for the life of me get my bearing housing screws off. Any tips? Have tried an impact driver and am thinking next step may be an impact drill. Just can’t get any of the four moving.

LukeJTav assuming you've tried getting some penetrating oil in there and let it soak? Tried turning in the opposite direction too (just slightly)? Gotta be careful with the straight screw heads and alloy housings!

Love Larn in terms of penetrating, are we talking WD40 or something else?

I've had a lot of success with WD40 in combination with a 3-in-1 type oil (just the little bottle from Bunnings). I believe there's a tiny bit of rust converter in the WD (maybe not?) to help break any rust bond and the 3 in 1 seems to just help a bit more somehow

Not sure how you'd go with a bit of heat on the alloy but maybe worth looking into that option too
