Scorpion Covert FX Helmet - Royal Enfield Meteor 350 - Ride, Helmet Test, More Rat Removals And Chat

Hi there,
join me on Buddy, my Royal Enfield Meteor 350, for my first ride with my fantastic new helmet, the Scorpion Covert FX. It took almost two months to get here but it was worth the wait.
I finally have a helmet that ticks all of the boxes !!!
I take you for another rodent relocation ride, talk about the new helmet and chat a fair bit as we take the road from Serón up to Las Menas.
I also introduce to the world, the exciting new concept of "Rider moods" (c) Hippo-Drones
Channels mentioned in this video :
‪@Ainsworth-Rider‬ - enjoy James riding his Classic 350 and Himalayan 411, often with Foxy
‪@thesilverfoxtravels6653‬ - enjoy Foxy, often desperately trying to keep James in check and failing
Both of these channels are likely to feature stops for a brew, cake and possibly sometimes even breakfast.
‪@HippoDrones‬ - enjoy Pete riding a very nice selection of diverse motorcycles and quite often going to a cafe for scran
‪@weemark67‬ - pop up to Scotland to see Mark enjoying his two cute cruisers, a Meteor 350 and a Rebel 500
This week's "sossidges" were very kindly sponsored by Wee Mark.
Thank you Mark ! ❤️🐕

Thanks Mike. Yes, that's exactly what I was thinking of, a transformer bike, one which could change geometry and bar and peg positions as well. OK, it wouldn't be cheap to make or buy but then it could still end up being cheaper than buying six or seven bikes and insuring them all, etc. 😂 I think this idea has legs 😉 Yes, very happy with the audio quality with this helmet. That was my biggest concern, that it might be a great but noisy helmet. As it turns out, I think it is quieter than my previous two, so really happy with it and delighted that I can finally stop the search for my perfect helmet !! Cheers Mike, Garry & Ruby

Hi Glenn, glad to hear that you are finally getting some decent weather over there. I think the wind is starting to drop here but of course that coincides with 30C+ temperatures, so riding in the afternoon is almost unbearable. I need to get out early in the summer. Or in the evening, after work. After three years Buddy genuinely does still look brand new, when clean. Can't argue with that. Great quality from RE ( even though admittedly, my bike has a relatively easy life ! ). Cheers Glenn, Garry & Ruby

🙂 Yes, finding a helmet that ticks all of the boxes, particularly as a motovlogger, is a massive quest. Particularly tricky when you have to order online because there are no shops nearby with a decent stock of decent helmets for you to try on. I was so pleased with this helmet that I almost pulled the trigger on ordering another identical one, just so that I'd have a replacement for whenever this one gets a bit knackered. But then I had a word with myself and didn't do it after all 😂 Delighted to discover that the new helmet is probably also quieter than the previous two. Of course that's something you only discover when you have been out recording. Very happy with the noise level and the acoustics of this helmet, so damn near perfect for me, I'd say. Your "rider moods" idea seems to have gone down well with my viewers. I think the idea has legs Pete ! Take care mate 👍🏻 Garry

During a Spanish summer, a white helmet does take longer to heat up than a dark coloured one. Also white is quite visible to car drivers and they might even mistake you for a copper and behave themselves 😂 My neighbour just told me that he had another rat in the trap yesterday. Best helmet ever, so far ! Annoying to think that it cost a third of what my Schuberth C4 PRO cost when new. That helmet was WAY worse. Last night I did discover one slight downside. Whilst fitting my intercom I did notice that there is no tidy way of getting the wires from the unit fed into the helmet. There is nowhere to slot them through, so you just have to feed the wires up under the helmet and into the opening. And you can't use the clamp mount either because there is nowhere to get it between the inner and outer shell ( same problem as with the wires, basically ). So I am having to use the sticky mount, which has been prone to falling off in the past. Might have to Sugru it on there if it keeps falling off. But that wouldn't be the end of the world. It's a quiet and comfortable helmet. Really enjoying it and will certainly buy the same helmet again, next time I need a new one ! Cheers Pinkie, Garry

@@economicalrides I had a Schuberth a few years ago. It was expensive, the quality was good, but I couldn’t wear it because it gave me a Klingon ridge in the middle of my bald head. 😂 Otherwise a great lid. I have given up on comm systems. They seem to ruin otherwise great helmets in my experience. My Arai XD 4’s liner is messed up now . I also found that it altered the fit of the helmet on me. Plus, I have issues with ummmm noises. I can’t tolerate the sounds of people chewing or smacking their lips. So, the last thing I’d want is an intercom piping someone chewing gum directly in my ears. 😂 I know it’s a weird thing but apparently it is a phobia of sorts. Surprisingly I don’t mind cats or dogs eating, though growing up on a farm I was never a fan of hogs eating. TMI, I know. 😂 Besides all of that I have pretty bad ringing in my left ear so I probably shouldn’t make that any worse. But, it is interesting that in the age of everyone wanting comms in their helmet that Scorpion didn’t route some channels for wires. Cheers Garry & Ruby!

  • @economicalrides

    @economicalrides

    23 күн бұрын

@@pinkiewerewolf Yeah, I think the C4 was the first Schuberth to have iffy quality. The C3s are still universally highly regarded. I did enjoy the fact that the comms were integrated on the C4 Pro but it didn't ever fit my egg shaped head, was noisy and the build quality was not good at all. Within two weeks I had to send it away to get the chin vent replaced because the latch broke and it would no longer close. My intercom is an intercom in name only. I have no idea how to connect it to anybody else and neither would I want to. It's basically just a bluetooth headset for me. I use it to listen to music on long boring rides or to answer the phone, should a call come in. I quite agree. I don't want to listen to others yacking whilst riding ! Yes, you do have to be wary of ruining the seal of your helmet when fitting, very easy to mess something up, particularly with the clamp style fitting brackets. The Scorpion has little headphone cutouts in the internal polystyrene which is great. Velcro the speakers in there and they are more or less flush and there is padding in front of them. I just couldn't find a way to get the wires from the outside to the inside, so just ended up running them under the the helmet and once they are inside, you can easily run them beneath the liner. Just difficult to find a way for the wires to pass from the outside to the inside without messing up the seal of the helmet around your neck. Otherwise the helmet seemed to be nicely set up for an intercom. Your phobia of mouth noises is familiar to me. I have seen a programme about it. Seems to be not uncommon and has apparently been the cause of several divorces ! 😂 So, it's 🥃 o'clock ! Goodnight Pinkie ! Garry & Ruby

Hi Peter. Yes, it's a massive relief to have finally found a helmet that ticks all of the boxes. It's so hard to find the right one, particularly when you want to record live on-bike audio. You only know if the helmet is going to be good for that, after having been out and recorded something, by which point you probably can't even return the helmet if it turns out to be too noisy. It also doesn't help when there are no shops nearby who have a decent supply of quality helmets for you to look at and try on. So I have to research and order online, which makes the whole thing even more risky. But as you say, the helmet quest is over. I will be able to stick with this one for the next five years or so now. A great relief ! 👍🏻 I also enjoy the less "head in bucket" acoustics this helmet provides with the visor down. That is an added bonus because with the other two, the audio got "muddy" once the visor was shut, sort of muffled. No tracker on the rats I'm afraid but that would have been great fun ! Bumped into my garage neighbour this morning and he caught another rat yesterday. So we are up to 7 now. I will check my trap later today. Hopefully we are slowly rounding them up because I'd like to give Buddy a wash but there's really not a lot of point if the rats are going to keep walking all over him with their mucky paws ! Think I'd have to go with the multiple bike option. Though it would be fun to run through all the moods in one ride, you'd still be trusting the bike maker with accurately adjusting what would ultimately be mediocre gear in any setting to accommodate the rest. On the other hand, having a mood stable wouldn't be cheap, though.

I think Malcolm is eager to transport rodents too..

Hi Stefan, yep, I've had two Scorpions now and they have both been excellent although with the last one, I bought one that was pretty tight ( shop assistant's advice ) because supposedly it would loosen up as it bedded in and I was buying it for track days, so didn't want it falling off. Unfortunately it loosen up at all. It was just one size too small. So my ears were always squashed and almost came off with the helmet, every time I pulled it off ! So that was an L and this time I ordered an XL, which yes, does feel a bit loose but not excessively so. And I'd rather have it slightly loose and comfortable than tight and unbearable. I think XL is my size with Scorpion and I will stick with it in future. That's a good point. If I catch another rat ( we are up to SEVEN now ! ) I will have to relocate him with Malcolm. Malcolm hasn't really had a longer run since he got his new battery 👍🏻 Cheers Stefan, Garry & Ruby

Hi Peter, 18000 km is good going for a set of tyres ! I'm guessing that my rear tyre has just suffered because I am almost always in a bend and rarely riding in a straight line.I've ended up with high and low points on the side of the rear tyre, which is rather odd 🤷‍♂ I'm a bit disappointed that it only lasted 11000 km but having said that, I can probably still put another 5k on it, I'll just have to be a bit more cautious in the bends from here on in. Either that or I need to ride up and down the road in straight lines for a month or two, just to even out the wear 😝 One thing's for sure. To be truly "economical" I do need to ride it until the canvas shows through 😂 Cheers Peter, love from Spain, Garry & Ruby

Once my faithful 1975 Stadium Achilles (anyone else remember when Stadium was a big name?) finally fell apart I managed to get a modern helmet and was amazed by just how noisy it is once you are on the move compared to the old glassfibre lid. Progress is not always an improvement.

Hi CC. Wow. That is big ! Yes, shell construction has a lot to do with how noisy it is in the helmet. My Schuberth helmet has a very light and poorly insulated shell, so when the wind hits it, you hear it. The previous Scorpion felt like it had a much thicker, denser shell and you didn't really notice the wind hitting it, it would just get gradually noisier the faster you went. It was never noisy at lower speeds, unlike the Schuberth. This new Scorpion has a similar feel to the old one. It feels like it has a thick dense shell, so if the visor shuts firmly and you don't have huge gaps around the bottom, it's bound to be quiet, and it is, thankfully ! I can't imagine how hard it must be to find a 5XL helmet ! None of the websites I use have ever had that size as an option ! Cheers CC. If Scorpion ever do a 5XL helmet, maybe give them a try. They seem to make some of the quieter helmets in my experience 👍🏻 Garry

Hi Andy. I use the GoPro media mod, which has a microphone input on it. Then you can just plug a mic directly into the camera. I use a wired mic because I am fed up with having to charge so much crap with USB chargers. It's getting out of control !!! Nowt wrong with a passive, wired mic and one less thing you need to charge before every ride ! Old skool rulez ! I quite like Pete's new bike and I believe it does handle very well, so probably is reminiscent of an old sports bike to ride as well as look at. But it's definitely a bike that people buy because they like the looks of old GP bikes and if you squint this bike does sort of look a bit like one. Not for me though. Too expensive and for me, looks aren't that important. It's more about the ride it gives you and I am sure that Pete's bike would make me ride like a nutter and wouldn't be very comfortable whilst doing it either. Pete is slowly reaching the age where he will slow down and his new bike will hold its value well, should he ever decide to move it on. He did secretly admit to me that he really enjoyed riding the Guzzis, simply because they had a calming effect on him. So he's getting there. He's just not quite there yet and still wants to hoon about from time to time 🙂 Been there, done that. These days I ride to relax, not to stress myself ! Cheers Andy, Garry

With the C4 I have gaps down the side where the air gets in and that makes it very noisy. Also the very light shell isn't very well insulated and passes a lot of noise into the helmet when riding through turbulent air, like we always have here. It was noisy even at low speeds here. But if it fits your head shape and you have no turbulence to deal with, it's supposed to be a quiet helmet. Just didn't turn out that way for me. The Scorpions feel like they have a very dense and thick shell, so that is a great start towards getting a quiet helmet. We don't have rats around the house ( fortunately ), just up behind the garages. Ive put up with all sorts of c*ap over the years but last year i spent (too much) on a helmet but i have to say it's the best i've had. Chalk n Cheese when you find one that does it for you 👍 Best wishes to You and Ruby...... (are Scottish sossidges actually a longitudinal Haggis? 🤔)

Hi Ken. 😂 Yes, it is a bit Stig-like ! They do a grey one but I decided a couple of years back that I'd only by white helmets from now on. They take longer to heat up in the summer and are quite visible to motorists ( who may even mistake you for a copper ), so seem like the best compromise for me. Obviously look horrific when the bugs have all just hatched at once and you go for a ride though ! Urgh ! So which helmet did you go for ? Was it a Shoei Neotec ? I am still tempted by one of those and was thinking that the new Scorpion would just be a stop-gap until I buy a Shoei but to be honest, although I do miss having a flip-up lid, the Scorpion is so good in all areas that I think I might just stick with it indefinitely ! I always neglected comfort when choosing helmets, was more focused on safety but I have to say, having a comfortable helmet is a game changer and probably enables you to ride with more concentration because you are not being distracted by some pain coming from somewhere in the helmet ! I used to spend a lot of time jiggling the helmet about whilst riding, trying to relieve some pressure point or other. Not now, hopefully ! Mark says that his sossidges are Aberdeen Angus, which is probably why Ruby loves them so much. I did suggest to Mark that they wouldn't be truly Scottish until they were put in batter and deep fried 😂 It's been a long time since I've had a good saveloy 🥰 Cheers Ken. Let me know which lid you bought because I'd be interested to know ! Garry & Ruby

@economicalrides I went for the Arai Tour X4 in the end. Expensive but it's probably my last helmet' I'd previously had Shoei, it did me well for many years but like you, I always had a little niggle, it never seemed to sit quite right. My Arai is quite claustrophobic to put on but once it passes my ears it almost becomes part of me.... cosy! Just one issue for me, with the peak on, sustained 70+mph will put pressure on the neck and temples but I tend to only do short distances at speed so it's not really an issue (for me). I was inspired to go for it by Itchyboots TBH, I thought that if she could use it all day everyday it has to be good enough for me! 👍

@@kenbrooks7794 Oh yes, a very good ADV style helmet that is ! In my time with the Schuberth C4 Pro I did come to appreciate the flip-up chin bar. Really useful for taking a quick slug of water on a dusty trail. When you are vlogging, you are always reluctant to completely remove your helmet because then you have to probably reposition the camera and the microphone when you put it back on again and it's just something you try to avoid having to do "mid-film". But a flip-up like the Shoei Neotec is great, you can leave everything connected and where it is and just flip it up, take a drink, go in to pay for petrol or whatever. Definitely a great idea and the Shoei I think fits my head shape and is famously quiet when out on the road. But, being poor, for now I am happy with my new Scorpion Covert FX. A Shoei flip-up is probably my dream helmet, as long as I can get one to fit my weirdly shaped noggin' as nicely as the Scorpion does ! Thanks Ken. Love from Spain, Garry & Ruby

you look like a Storm Trooper! sorry, could not resist. as far as our Rat friend, hope its by its other friend, could have been husband and wife... black visor will look perfect with that helmet. i might go mirrored to really scare the kiddos. i am with your neighbor, when it comes to creatures in my living space. wait, i do rehome spiders outside. other then that, they meet their maker. as far as getting out of the house right now, it is only in the morning, as it is 98 degrees with humidity they call it with heat index is 107 to 115... not fun

I have an agreement with the spiders in my house, they can do what they like, but will get instant eviction or "disappeared" if they encroach on the places I go! 😀

@@HippoDrones currently, i have two spiders that live out side on my front porch. they are very respectful. they both make webs every couple of days and will take them down in the morning when they do make them. weird, but both sleep in there own spot as one i can keep an eye on in the front light unit, just crawls up inside it and sit and waits till he needs to make a new web to catch a meal. i leave them both alone.

Yes, that helmet does look good and it also seems to work well aerodynamically based on my experience so far. I will have to take a ride on a motorway to give it a high speed test but it certainly seems to cut through the air with minimal fuss ! It has to be a black visor Blake. If I get a mirrored one, the kids will get distracted by their own reflection and will stop being scared 😂 My neighbour found another rat yesterday, so we are up to SEVEN now. Three relocated and four......erm....NOT ! If I get another rat in my trap, it will be Malcolm the Malaguti's turn to relocate it. He hasn't been out for a while, since he got his new battery in fact ! 🙂 Heat and humidity is a bad combination. Don't envy you at all Blake. I really hate high humidity ! Fortunately, living at 1000m, even when it is 38C up here, it's rarely humid with it. Stay safe and stay cool ( of course you will ! ) Garry & Ruby
